This book was excellent, and in my opinion, very different than his first which was also great. Sheridan is obviously very intelligent and asks some of the great fighters the right questions. Sheridan is a deep thinker and really presses to get to the answer of what makes some fighters so much better than the rest. I think he was successful in finding the answer(s).Each of the fighters he spends time with gives a different answer and Sheridan adds a little of his own experience. The book is not the typical sports psychology--think positive stuff--although Sheridan does cover that. I think every reader will walk away with a different answer as to what will make him or her better in whatever they do. Marcello Garcia sums it up most simply in the book, but again every reader will get something different, so I won't spoil it here.Sheridan focuses on fighting, but touches on other competitive events so any competitive athlete will enjoy this book.
Mr. Sheridan abandoned the thrill of the fight for the thrill of the interview in the sequel to "A Fighter's Heart." Surprisingly it lead to a more enlightening and fun experience. The interviews are well thought out, featuring talents ranging from MMA champs and coaches, chess and jujitsu masters, and even olympic champions and ultra-runners. The variety keeps things interesting leading up to a well thought out conclusion. A great read for anyone who competes at anything.
I was pleasantly surprised by the rich insights of the world's great fighting minds that Mr. Sheridan has documented and analyzed in this book. The wide-ranging perspectives of these different, but very successful individuals have key traits in common. There are life lessons to be learned from each interview, ranging from wrestling and MMA legends, a chess master, ultra-runner and even an art critic, etc.
I am a huge MMA fan and haven't read Sam's first book (yet). But given all of the high praise for this book, I purchased the Kindle version before going on vacation. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I love how the book started with the insight of Dan Gable, wrestling's living legend, and went on to Jiu Jitsu great Marcelo Garcia, Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward, the always clutch Randy Couture, the wise beyond his years Greg Jackson, lightweight contender Kenny Florian, all time great Renzo Gracie, etc. etc. This book uncovers a lot about fighting but it also covers a lot about life. I like how Sam interviewed the still relatively young Josh Waitzkin and got loads of useful information about what it takes to be an all time chess great or a great marathon runner or a great fighter or anything else for that matter. Whatever your passion, I think this book has tons of value. I need to read this book over and over because there is so much great information that can apply to whatever you have a passion for. Great job Sam!
"The Fighter's Mind" is Sheridan's second foray into the field of MMA literature. His first book was unique and intriguing; his second book delivers on all accounts!Essentially, this book is a collection of interviews with some of the world's greatest fighters, coaches, and athletes. Sheridan asks, "Is it interesting to talk to artists about how they think about art? Is there anything to be learned?" By positing this question Sheridan is, in some ways, trying to justify his efforts in talking to athletes about what they do. Is there something to be learned from talking to these athletes? Is there something that could benefit us all? Sheridan concludes that there is, in fact, something tangible to be gained from talking about what goes on inside a fighter's mind.The book is interesting and beautifully writing. My favorite interview in the book is with Greg Jackson. The interview is fecund with knowledge and insight, not only into the sport of MMA, but also into the mind of one of MMA's greatest coaches: Greg Jackson. Jackson says, "Each problem [when training a fighter] is like jazz - each unique piece has to be pushed sometimes, pulled others. It's improvisational." The interview continues onto a discussion of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and eventually to the fiercest Mongol leader, Genghis Kahn.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all athletes. This isn't just a book about MMA and boxing, this is a book about the human mind, and the untrodden limits that only few have ventured into.P.S. Sam Sheridan is amazing author. I really enjoyed his book A Fighter's Heart: One Man's Journey Through the World of Fighting and recommend it to anyone interested in MMA. This book gives you an in depth look into the mental game of fighters. The books also helps you to think differently in life (it does not just relate to fighting but everyday aspects of life). I can't wait till he writes a new book.

The people’s steady desire for sovereignty despite multiple international attempts to create submissive dependency is the engine which has enabled them to survive and, in many ways, thrive. The authors take us through Cuba’s many steps and missteps as it cleaved to this vision of freedom, starting with the 1492 encounter of Columbus and the Tainu, Ciboney, and Guanahatabey indigenous groups and concluding with more recent events through 2016. Appropriately, most attention is given to the ongoing aftermath of the 1959 revolution. Especially interesting to me is the account and analysis of how the U.S. and the Soviet Union had a protracted tug of war with Cuba as the rope; the effects on the Cuban government, economy, and culture are presented in great detail.The book is made more personal as a result of the inclusion of many anecdotes about Philip Brenner’s interactions with Cuban people, both famous and not, during his several trips to that nation. Many illustrations, photos, and maps make the reader’s experience more vivid. The appendix gives a very useful chronology of important events.What comes through with immense clarity is the authors’ love of the Cuban people and respect for their mission to retain freedom and dignity against great odds. That said, I never had the impression that this affection clouded their assessments or lessened their objectivity. Cuba Libre should prove to be a valuable resource for both laypersons and academicians. An impressive achievement.
Brenner gives an interesting account of Cuba 's history but does not even attempt to hide his pro Castro bias. In many places he borders on full Castro apologist. He describes the kangaroo courts after the revolution as necessary for the public to vent. He also rarely, if ever, criticizes Castro for his oppression. He goes as far as to call Cuba and the Castros altruistic . The most interesting part is probably dealing with Cuba and Soviet Union
In preparation for a future visit I read this book and learned a lot, but could not avoid concluding that it is sympathetic to Castro’s revolution. Even though it catalogues some hard truths about Cuba, it somehow leaves the impression that every hardship and failure was somehow due to outside animosity or bad luck, instead of pre-ordained by communist-style government buffoonery. Many of the author’s photos in the book, from plucky peasants enjoying their revolutionary upgrade from abject poverty to ordinary poverty, to balcony views of the Cuban Communist Party assembly, obviously speak to an observer with a very good long term relationship with the Cuban government. This alone prejudices the value of the book as an impartial academic study. It fails to explain Castro’s transition from heroic Batista foe to communist dictator, and his political prisoners are barely mentioned, while the shameful US government actions with regard to expatriate airline bombers gets lengthy examination. An incautious reader will learn a lot of Cuban historical events, but may come away thinking that a good-intentioned tyrant is just what this country needs.

About the Author
Yoshiki Nakamura is originally from Tokushima Prefecture. She started drawing manga in elementary school, which eventually led to her 1993 debut of Yume de Au yori Suteki (Better than Seeing in a Dream) in Hana to Yume magazine. Kyoko keeps improving herself

There are plenty of fun scenes, of course, even without Ren being in any of the scenes. But mostly this volume is about Kyoko refocusing her acting and not letting herself get distracted and lose a role because of it.Story: Kyoko is trialing for the role of Momiji - the female assassin fiercely loyal to her lord and forced to defend the woman he loves. When she becomes distracted in the middle of the audition at the thought that Ren might have feelings for her rival Yumika, she loses focus and flubs the audition, earning the producer's ire. But surprisingly enough, it's Moko who comes to her rescue and saves the day! Erika, meanwhile, is watching very carefully in the background - ready to step in if Yumika tries more underhanded tricks to get the role from under Kyoko.There are several plots going on with this volume. Ren being confronted with an image of Sho stealing a kiss from Kyoko - and the realization it happened just before he talked with her that night. Erika watching the person who handicapped her and making sure Yumika's plans do not come to fruition. Kyoko falling for Yumika's misdirections and thinking that Ren has feelings for her - and that Yumika takes them for granted. And then the movie Lotus in the Mud and the auditions.In all, another great volume in such a fun and enjoyable series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Useful advice, but watch the publication date - some comments are outdated.
not great for personal statement examples. all of them seem to be prior to electronic AMCAS as almost all PSs are 6,000-10,000 characters long
Very informative. I'm pre-med cell and molecular biology and this provided a great amount of useful information to help me.
Bought this book over four years ago... can't understand why they want me to write a review on it NOW. Honestly never read the book, or opened it after I figured out how to get into medschool.
I was once a paranoid premed who needed some guidance on how to pursue my dream. This book acts as a detailed guide to the medical path. Sometimes the book gets a little too specific on some of the "rules" (i.e. how to pack your clothes with attached diagrams), but these are only suggestions. Sometimes, these specifics are really helpful if you're clueless on what to do. This is an excellent book and I have already recommended it to some of my premed friends.
This books gives one information on how to prepare for medical school since the time one is in high school. Check list of things to do all throughout college and/or high school to get ready for the ultimate goal: Medical School.
Now that I am in I am writing reviews on these books. The reviews for this one must have been written by the publisher. My friend lent me this one because he told me to save my money. You can spend alot of time reading this and not getting much from it. Better to spend time studying for the MCAT's and reading a more concise admissions book. Rec. Princeton Review and Insider's Guide by Toyos.
This book has A LOT of information in it, and is very helpful. I think it is worth the price.
