Review

Lombardo s Inferno is a translation that resourcefully mines the words and narrative of Dante for suggestions, implications, motives, and potential disclosures that only locally vivid English, an attentive and active and daring imagination, and exegetical verve and nerve can give proper voice to. Lombardo s renderings are concrete, interpretive, expository, and explanatory; they are also resolutely colloquial, racy, and sometimes ruthlessly explicit. Anthony Oldcorn s notes add the seasoned, Virgilian guidance one expects from a lifelong Dantist. The generous, notably informed, and oftentimes pleasingly wry and urbane annotation is designed to keep beginning readers on track while making them more informed; it offers somewhat practiced readers a chance to rethink the text at critical points with the aid of a senior scholar. Prose arguments at the head of each canto foreground and efficiently retail the verse narrative that follows. The text is also fully equipped with a strong and passionate Introduction that begins strategically with the De vulgari eloquentia. All in all, this is a dual-text Inferno that packs in as Dante s retributive hell itself does God s plenty. --James C. Nohrnberg, Professor of English, University of VirginiaThis new Inferno is very quickly going to become a favorite. The translation itself is unusually dynamic and returns to the poem a register of daily speech that increases clarity and energy. It never loses sight of the fact that the Inferno tells an intensely involving story. This volume also offers real help to the novice reader. The synopsis printed at the beginning of each canto; the detailed commentary on each canto, at the end of the book; and, most importantly, a really excellent Introduction all these give the reader constant and multileveled guides to the journey. --F. Regina Psaki, The Giustina Family Professor of Italian Language and Literature, University of Oregon

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil. The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter. You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould

The definitive refutation to the argument of The Bell Curve. When published in 1981, The Mismeasure of Man was immediately hailed as a masterwork, the ringing answer to those who would classify people, rank them according to their supposed genetic gifts and limits. Yet the idea of biology as destiny dies hard, as witness the attention devoted to The Bell Curve, whose arguments are here so effectively anticipated and thoroughly undermined. In this edition, Stephen Jay Gould has written a substantial new introduction telling how and why he wrote the book and tracing the subsequent history of the controversy on innateness right through The Bell Curve. Further, he has added five essays on questions of The Bell Curve in particular and on race, racism, and biological determinism in general. These additions strengthen the book's claim to be, as Leo J. Kamin of Princeton University has said, "a major contribution toward deflating pseudo-biological 'explanations' of our present social woes."

Gould is a terrific writer when on the right subjects, neatly and concisely laying out in a series of essays originally written as magazine columns some interesting trivia. When he sticks to evolution, he's incredible. When he veers in to the history of science, he can be uneven and long-winded, and the forays in to geology are largely pointless. When discussing the period from Darwin's first publishing of his theory to the widespread acceptance over the course of a generation, he focuses too much on one or two unimportant characters and misses the forest for the trees.Which is a shame. The early chapters are great fun to read, and offer great insight in to how adaptation works. But unlike, say, Dawkins, Gould wanders about in an uneven fashion. That's expected somewhat in a book that is a collection of magazine pieces written over many years, unlike a purpose-written book. But some of these feel like an idea that had been sitting in a drawer for many years, he decided to write something about it, but didn't really have much to say. A good editor could have cleaned that up, but perhaps that would not have left enough material for a book.

The Mismeasure of Man lays out the fallacies inherent in our too-frequent attempt at reifying something as complex as intelligence. Gould exposes the unfortunate history of our pseudoscientific endeavors where evident truth is traded for social dogma and institutional convenience. The implications of this history are alive today, restricting opportunity and stifling humanity’s chance at achieving true equality.

This volume is a collection of Gould's earlier essays for the New York Museum of Natural History. They reflect his marvelous insight into the heart of current arguments in evolution studies, his knowledge of the history of the subject, and his take on life in general. The Panda's Thumb, entitled from one of these essays, is not quite as witty as his later works are, but his personable style and conversational approach make the book very readable. One of the more interesting topics included is his discussion of the 19th Century rationale for prejudice against women and individuals of non-Western cultures. I found the very circular reasoning on the correlation between brain size and intellect and the misbegotten comparison of developmentally delayed individuals with individuals of other races particularly informative. The same kind of reasoning appears to be enjoying a destructive renaissance among social biologists today, most notably the authors of the notorious Bell Curve. The dissection of this type of faulty reasoning by an expert is instructive and a process well worth learning oneself and teaching to young people. Some of the more admirable of Gould's writing habits, and well displayed in this book, are his ability to give fair voice to the opposition, his acknowledgement of the work of others, and his capacity to find value even in the faulty work of others. The latter is well demonstrated in his discussion of the 19th Century effort to locate a representative of a basic life form, a link between the living and the inert. In this essay he shows that good science is part hard work, part individual brilliance, and part being able to say "I was wrong in my thinking here."The casual, approachable style, the brilliant and open mind, the logical approach to argument all make this an excellent book for anyone but would definitely make it a good book for high school students to learn the process of critical thought.

Gould was one of the great minds of our time as well as a wonderful writer. Always a pleasure. Book is in great condition

I love the way Gould gets to the heart of things and explains his arguments in an easy to understand way. I highly recommend this and any of his books to enlighten your knowledge of many subjects. I am not saying he is the final authority on any of these subjects but after reading him, I always feel I am better off for putting in the time to read his books.

The Mismeasure of Man Stephen Jay GouldThe late prolific writer of natural history and natural selection concludes his The Mismeasure of Man with a line from Darwin,”If the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by out institutions, great is our sin.”In The Mismeasure of Man, Gould yields perspectives on three centuries of race and racism, and how men of the fledgling school of psychology attempted to qualify and quantify their new science by half baked theory and methodology followed by bastardizing the intent of Binet’s intelligence testing. Binet said “intelligence cannot be abstracted as a single number. IQ is a helpful device for identifying children in need of aid, not a dictate of inevitable biology.”Much of Gould’s manuscript concentrates on those, much to the contrary of Binet’s intent, who carried intelligence testing and ratings to obscene levels.Gould explains and refutes the examples of statistical analysis used by the early to mid 20th century psychologists, which formed the basis for the Herrnstein and Murray 1994 work, The Bell Curve. Gould writes in regard to The Bell Curve, “So long as people remain on the top of the Social heaps by accident of a noble name or parental wealth, and so long as members of despised castes cannot rise, whatever their talents, social stratification will not reflect intellectual merit.” Though quite often long in word, Gould attacks and documents how this intellectual racism has and continues to inject itself into our culture.Gould analyzes how “passive acceptance of common wisdom, of upper class Victorian males” evolved into “potent and evil nonsense that passed for certain knowledge,” and the repercussions that have historically manifested themselves. This became all too apparent with certain ethnic groups, Jewish refugees from Central Europe in particular, wishing to escape the coming Nazi holocaust, who sought to emigrate, were refused entry due to “eugenic propaganda”due to quotas based upon intelligence testing.Gould was a prolific writer, whose voice, now absent, is needed more than ever. The Mismeasure of Man, at times is a tough read, in particular the sections covering statistics and factor analysis, but Gould enables the reader to understand the continual fallacy of effort to quantify intelligence with a single number, and how this has affected us historically, and continues to do so today.

I love how well this guide is written and in plain English. The only misgiving I have is that I would prefer if there were a lot more exercises and a solution manual or online guide to the solutions.

I haven't found a Murach's book that I didn't like. Great explanations and much cheaper than other textbooks

Great book if your taking java classes but it needs better examples.

No problems.

Good book if you do not need any tech support, Mr. Murach is no help.

Thing I would have liked to know (just learning Java and IDE), but weren't available in the description: JAVA SE 8, NetBeans 8 ( I am learning with v7 of both), MySQL 5.6 ( I use PostgreSQL). Install instruction for Microsoft and Apple ( I use unix)UPDATE: Netbeans 7 can NOT open the sample code due to a binary versioning conflict. Price is $40.25 at author's site, but probably, taxes & shipping extra Download of example code requires name and email address registration and uses 'tracking' site to supply captcha. (I had to turn off 'Privacy Badger" for the registration to completely display. Just starting to use the book, I can't comment on content yet.

"Murach's Beginning Java with NetBeans" teaches Java and your first IDE (integrated development environment) at the same time. Like all Murach books, the book is heavy (600+ pages) and contains good review/labs at the end of each chapter. Including those that have you modify existing code. When I feature was introduced in a certain version of Java, the book points out which one.I really liked the intro including types of applications and keywords. I like the covering NetBeans as needed for specific concepts including code completion and the debugger. Including the “main project” concept which is something that makes me crazy in NetBeans! Similarly, good programming idioms are covered so readers can see patterns. I particularly liked how the code listings highlighted the relevant parts. I also liked the UML class diagram introduction. The only thing I noticed missing was the introduction of equals(), but not hashCode(). Since they should both be used together, I feel like they should have been covered together. Also, I disagreed with the comment about lambdas not being reusable. They can be assigned to a variable and reused that way. There's an Eclipse version of this book that came out this year. I reviewed it and both are of good quality. Eclipse is more marketable than NetBeans so I lean towards suggesting that version.---Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing this review on behalf of CodeRanch.

The body of knowledge when it comes to Java is quite vast and can be very intimidating to a beginner because it is hard to know where to begin. So many books try to be comprehensive reference manuals that they can cause someone new to Java to drown in information overload. Other Java books will explore a specialized API in great detail, but it can be hard to see the big picture.“Murach's Beginning Java” is a gentle introduction designed to enable beginners to learn the essential basics of the language. It comes in two editions: one for the NetBeans IDE and one for the Eclipse IDE. The two books are essentially the same except for the IDE you choose to develop with. There are two appendixes at the end of the book, one for Windows and other for Mac OS X, that show how to install Java and the respective IDE's so you can work the end-of-chapter exercises. As beginning books, they cover the basics you would expect: classes, methods, primitive types, operators, control statements, strings and arrays. It also covers basic object-oriented programming concepts including inheritance, interfaces, inner classes, enumerations and exceptions. The books employ the paired-pages format that Murach is known for: For each topic, the right page contains pictures, diagrams, code examples, and bullet points, while the left page contains the explanatory text.At the end of every chapter, there are a set of hands-on exercises that let you practice the concepts in that chapter. The practice exercises are quite important to do. So many other books either don't have practice problems at all, or if they do, they are so open-ended and time-consuming that it is hard to know if you got them right. Murach provides practice code that you download from their website. The problems typically involve using the IDE to make simple code modifications, and then running and debugging your changes. This is an important hands-on approach, since it not enough to learn a new language just by reading about it.As a beginning book, it also briefly mentions lambdas, generics and threads, but does not go very deep into those topics. Threads especially can be an involved topic that deserve a book of their own. It also has some basic coverage of the new date/time API. File I/O is limited to text files. Unfortunately, the only collection that was covered in any depth was a List, with minimal discussion of Maps and Sets. Sets and Maps are essential data structures that any Java developer should know, and I was quite disappointed the book did not cover them in much detail. It also seems strange the author would discuss the equals method but not hashCode which I feel should be discussed together.Surprisingly for a beginning book, it has coverage of JDBC in the later chapters by having the user install MySQL and MySQL Workbench in the later chapters. It also has an introduction to creating a graphical user interface using Swing. This book is a bit different from “Murach's Java Programming,” 4th edition in that the other book goes at a faster pace and covers more material like binary file I/O and XML. It is designed for more advanced programmers who are simply looking to pick up Java as a new language. The introductory book is designed more for people who are new to programming generally, not just Java. All-in-all the book succeeds in what it is trying to do. You won't be an expert after reading this book, but you will be in a better place to explore and understand the rest of the language.
