CHAPTER 1The Basics Have ChangedIn the past few years, much of what we thought we knew about diabetes has been turned on its head. What is now coming into focus is an understanding of its fundamental causes, and that gives us power we never had before. To make sure we are at the same starting point, let me walk you through the basics: symptoms, diabetes types, and typical treatments as they are currently used. Then I will show you what's new.HOW DO WE KNOW IT'S DIABETES?First, let's make sense of the symptoms. Diabetes may arrive with no symptoms at all, but often it starts with fatigue. For no apparent reason, your spark is just no longer there. It may also seem that you are losing water more rapidly than you should be, which is to say that you make trips to the bathroom more often than usual. And you are thirsty: You find yourself drinking a surprising amount of water. Here is what is going on: The fundamental problem is that sugar is not able to pass from your bloodstream into the cells of your body. From that single problem come a great many others, like one domino knocking over another and another and another. The sugar we are speaking of is glucose--one of the smallest and simplest sugar molecules. In this case, sugar is not just another word for junk food or empty calories. The fact is that the cells of your body use this kind of sugar--glucose--as an energy source. Like gasoline for your car or jet fuel for an airplane, glucose is your body's fuel. It powers your movements, your thoughts, and more or less everything you do.And that is exactly the problem. If glucose is unable to enter your cells, they are deprived of their basic fuel, so you lose your energy. That is why you are fatigued. If your muscles do not have the glucose they need for power, you tire easily.Meanwhile, the glucose that cannot get into your muscle cells builds up in your bloodstream. It becomes more and more concentrated in the blood, and eventually it starts to pass through the kidneys and ends up in your urine.*Now, as glucose passes through your kidneys, it carries water along with it- -lots of water, hence all those trips to the bathroom. What follows, naturally, is thirst--you are losing all those fluids. So fatigue, frequent urination, and thirst are all symptoms of one problem: glucose having trouble getting into your cells. You may also find that you are losing weight. And no, this is not an especially welcome event--not in this situation. You lose weight because your cells are in essence starving. Nutrients cannot enter your cells, so your body is malnourished. Yes, even if you are eating plenty of food, nutrients and fuel are unable to get where they are needed.Every day, people arrive at doctors' offices complaining of fatigue, frequent urination, thirst, and sometimes unexplained weight loss. The doctor takes a blood sample, finds an unusually high level of glucose in the blood, and diagnoses diabetes. The doctor then advises the patient that it is essential to get blood sugar under control. An overly large amount of glucose flooding through the bloodstream day after day can harm the arteries. Left unchecked, it can damage the heart and the delicate blood vessels of the eyes, kidneys, and extremities. But as we have shown in our research studies, the road to high blood sugar is a two-way street. When you change your diet and make other healthful improvements, a rising glucose level can fall. Sometimes the change can be so dramatic that no doctor looking at you afterward would ever guess that you had once been diagnosed with diabetes.* The passage of glucose from the bloodstream into the urine led to the technical name doctors use for diabetes: diabetes mellitus. Diabetes comes from a Greek word meaning "to pass through," and mellitus is the Latin word for "honey" or "sweet."How Doctors Diagnose DiabetesDoctors diagnose diabetes if:. You have symptoms of diabetes (frequent urination, unusual thirst, unexplained weight loss) and your blood glucose level is 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl)--(or 11.1 millimoles per liter (mmol/l)*--or higher, regardless of the time of day or whether you are fasting, or . Your blood glucose level is 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l) or higher after an 8-hour fast.Your doctor will consider this a provisional diagnosis until it is confirmed by similar testing on a separate day. In some cases, doctors perform a glucose tolerance test, in which you drink a syrup containing 75 grams of glucose. If your blood glucose value is 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l) or higher 2 hours later, your doctor will diagnose diabetes.Normal fasting blood glucose is less than 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/l). After a 2- hour glucose tolerance test, the value should be less than 140 mg/dl (7.8 mmol/l). If your values are above the normal limit but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes, your doctor will diagnose prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), which often precedes an eventual diabetes diagnosis.* US medical laboratories measure glucose in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). In most other countries, glucose is measured in millimoles per liter (mmol/l). As you will see, the same units are used in cholesterol measurements.Diabetes TypesA diagnosis of diabetes--or prediabetes--means the insulin in your body is not doing its job adequately. Insulin is a hormone that moves sugar from your bloodstream into the cells of your body, among other functions. It acts like a key, opening a door to the cell, so to speak, and allowing nutrients inside. When insulin arrives at the cell's surface and opens the door, glucose is able to enter the cell, which uses it for power. If for some reason your body is not making insulin, the result is rising blood glucose levels. Similarly, your blood glucose rises if your cells resist insulin's actions--the key goes in the lock, but the door will not open. Over the long run, high blood glucose levels can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other parts of your body.Diabetes comes in three main types, called type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Let's look at each one.Type 1 diabetes usually manifests in childhood or young adulthood. It used to be called childhood-onset or insulin-dependent diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, something has damaged the pancreas's ability to produce insulin, and you need to get it from an outside source--typically by injection. However, recent research has revealed a great deal about how diet changes can dramatically reduce the risk that diabetes will bring any serious complications your way, as you will see in Chapter 3.In addition, we know more than ever about the causes of the disease, arming us with more power to prevent it. The damage to the insulin-producing cells is caused by the biological equivalent of "friendly fire." That is, it is caused by the body's immune system--our white blood cells that are supposed to fight bacteria and viruses. These cells ought to protect you, but instead they have attacked the cells of the pancreas, destroying its ability to produce insulin. In Chapter 3, we will look at what triggers this process. It may surprise you to learn that foods--particularly the foods infants are fed within the first months oflife--are leading suspects.Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes, or sometimes non- insulin-dependent diabetes. About 9 out of 10 people with diabetes have type 2. Most people with this form of the disease still produce insulin; the problem is that their cells resist it. Insulin tries to bring glucose into the cells, but the cells respond like a door with a malfunctioning lock. In response to these sluggish cells, your body produces more and more insulin, trying to overcome the resistance. If the body's insulin supply cannot overcome the resistance, glucose simply builds up in your blood.Diabetes drugs work to counteract this problem: Some make your cells more responsive to insulin. Others cause your pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream or block your liver from sending extra glucose into the blood.Until now, most diabetes diets have tried to compensate for the cells' resistance to insulin's action, too. They limit the amount of sugar in your diet. They also limit starch (complex carbohydrate) because starch is actually made from many glucose molecules joined together in a chain. During digestion, starch breaks down to release natural sugars into the blood. The idea is that if you do not get too much carbohydrate at any one time, your cells will not be overwhelmed with too much glucose. For people on medications, typical diet plans aim to keep the amount of glucose or starch fairly constant from meal to meal and from day to day so the amount of medication required to help your body process glucose--your daily dosage- -can stay the same, too. In short, these diets guide you on what, when, and how much to eat.Insulin is Made in the PancreasInsulin is made in the pancreas, an organ located just behind your stomach that is about the size and shape of a TV remote control. In fact, remote control is what the pancreas is all about. It sends insulin into the bloodstream to travel to the cells of your body to help them take in glucose from the bloodstream. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas has stopped making insulin. In type 2 and gestational diabetes, the pancreas is usually able to make insulin, but the body's cells resist its action.New research has changed everything, however. We can now use diet changes to influence insulin sensitivity directly. So, as you will see shortly, the nutrition prescription has been completely rewritten to take advantage of this new understanding.Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 except that it occurs during pregnancy. While it typically disappears after childbirth, it is a sign of insulin resistance, and that means that type 2 diabetes may be around the corner. With the same sorts of steps that tackle type 2 diabetes, we can often stop gestational diabetes from ever turning into type 2.GENES ARE NOT DESTINYDiabetes runs in families, but don't take that to mean that if one of your parents has diabetes, a similar diagnosis has to be your fate as well. You can change things.Let's take a look at type 1 diabetes first. Many children are born with genes that make it possible for them to develop type 1 diabetes, but most of them never do. In fact, even among identical twins, when one twin has type 1 diabetes, the other has less than a 40 percent chance of having it.1 What makes the difference, apparently, is the environment, particularly the foods the child is exposed to early in life, viral infections, and perhaps other factors.Genes play a similar role in type 2 diabetes. Many years before diabetes ever manifests, special tests can detect insulin resistance in young adults who have inherited a tendency toward type 2 diabetes from their parents. If they eat the same kinds of foods their parents did, they are very likely headed for a diagnosis. Abundant evidence shows, however, that changes in diet and lifestyle can cut the odds that diabetes will occur. When it does occur, diet can dramatically alter its course. The point is this: Some genes are dictators, and others are not. The genes for hair color or eye color, for example, really are dictators. If they call for you to have brown hair or blue eyes, you can't argue. But the genes for diabetes are more like committees. They do not give orders; they make suggestions. If our genes call for diabetes, we do not necessarily have to listen to them. We have more control than you might imagine.HEMOGLOBIN A1CAs you have seen, doctors diagnose diabetes based on your blood glucose level, and tracking your blood glucose is an important way to track the effects of diet and medication dosages. As helpful as glucose testing is, though, it really indicates only how you are doing at the time you take the test. The best way to tell how you are doing over the long run is with a test called hemoglobin A1c, or A1c for short. This is the main way you will track your progress in controlling diabetes.Hemoglobin is the pigment that gives color to your red blood cells and whose job it is to carry oxygen. What the A1c test actually measures is how much glucose has entered your red blood cells and become stuck to hemoglobin. If you have had a lot of glucose in your blood, a fair amount of it gets into your cells and sticks to your hemoglobin. If you have not had much glucose in your blood, your hemoglobin has much less stuck to it.Since red blood cells have a fairly short life span (about 4 months), the test indicates how well your blood sugar has been controlled over the preceding 3 months or so. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that people with diabetes get their A1c values below 7 percent. Research shows, however, that lower values cut the risk of complications, so many experts now call for targets of 6.5 or even 6 percent.DIABETES DIETSIf you have diabetes, chances are you were given printed guidelines on what to eat and what to avoid. Perhaps you have met with a dietitian, and you may have been referred to a diabetes class. Unfortunately, most people do not get the ongoing support they need to make dietary changes, and as a result, this well-meaning effort may not have much effect. If you are like many people, you may have found your diet tough to sustain. For many years, the ADA has offered diet recommendations designed to provide basic nutrition while also keeping calorie intake and food choices reasonably stable over the course of the day and from one day to the next, as you saw above. The idea was that if you had no carbohydrates for breakfast but then had a big carb-fest later in the day, your blood sugar would change erratically. Similarly, if you had lots of starchy foods on Monday but went low-carb the rest of the week, your blood sugar would be all over the map, and your medications could not keep up with you.

This book was so informative and convincing that I decided to follow Dr. Barnard's advice. I have now decided to go vegan/low fat. I was already vegetarian, had been for a couple decades now. But cheese and snacks have been my downfall every time I attempted vegan. I am determined to not fall down there again. You see, I have fibromyalgia and have a lot of pain. Pain longs for comfort. I am going to have to pull on a soft-comfy blanket so that I don't long for the bad foods. On top of that, I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, so I have been testing my blood a lot. I wasn't controlling the sugar levels my way. I refused to go back to eating meats or other dairy (milk/eggs) so giving up cheese and snack with oils is easy. Besides, Doctor Bernard suggests that it is possible to not exercise at first. So this is a test. :-)At first I borrowed this book through the library but I knew I needed to have my own copy. Then I bought the paperback. The font was to small, but the recipes in the second half of the book are great to have on hand in tree form and they are easy to read. But that wasn't enough. I had to get the Kindle version so I could read it on my tablet where I could enlarge charts, etc. This book is a keeper in all forms!

I spent 2 years trying to follow a plan to reverse my diabetes... I passed this plan up 2 years ago becasue I thought it would be too hard.. but when my sugar went up 20 points, I got serious... Instead of injecting insulin, I followed Dr. Barnard's (and Colin Campbells) advise and it only took 3 months for my diabetes to be reversed... and.. it's not as hard as I thought!.. Today I am fully adjusted to this program and see so so so many more benefits too... i.e., my arthritis disappeared.. my skin (Im 66 years old) is glowing again.., my two toes numb for 5 years are back to normal... my cholesterol medication is now stopped because my cholesterol dropped 40+ points and I don't need it.. my eyebrows grew back.. and I feel like dancing all day long... no problem.. Im enjoying my good health and really enjoy eating my carbs again... welcome back oatmeal

I've been dieting since I was eight years old. In fact, I don't think I can even remember a time when I didn't struggle with my weight, and I'm 43 years old now. Last year, I reached my highest weight at 235 lbs. (I'm a woman and 5', 5”) and I began having some pains in my arm and was unusually short of breath after walking just a couple blocks. Scared, I went to the doctor, and after some tests, she recommended that I go to the emergency room immediately, as she suspected that I was experiencing a pulmonary embolism. The emergency room doctors laughed her off, saying I was too young, and not fat and/or sedentary enough to be experiencing this. I went in for a CT Scan, and as the night wore on, my emergency room doctor looked more and more concerned. It seemed I had two large blockages in my arteries, and he admitted me to the hospital for observation, where I was taught to give myself injections in the stomach until the pills I was placed on kicked in.I struggled for the next few months, trying to lose weight, and trying to fit in any amount of exercise during my twelve hour work days. I had read Dr. Barnard's book before (although I'm not diabetic), and although I often stuck to two out of three of the rules he laid out, I didn't stick to all three at once, and I couldn't quite trust that I could eat as much as I wanted and lose weight, so, still counting calories, I often slipped up and ate off plan.In late March of 2017, I woke up in the middle of the night, unable to breath. I didn't go to the emergency room (I should have, don't try this at home), but the next day I decided to go all in; I decided to forget about losing weight and eat purely for health. I followed all three guidelines Dr. Barnard recommends: The food must be vegan, with no added fat, and low GI, and I followed the rules religiously for 14 weeks. I didn't weigh myself at all; I was waiting for my next blood test, and I was worried that it was all a lie, that I wouldn't lose weight, couldn't lose it because it's not possible to eat all you want and lose weight. That's just a pipe dream, right?Wrong. I ate plenty of food, never went hungry, ate in the middle of the night if I wanted to, and I lost twelve pounds. Without exercise. Without hunger. Practically without trying. All I did was stick to the appropriate types of food. And I ate as much as I wanted, and not just sprouts and carrots, but real food, beans, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, barley, sweet potatoes. It's slow weight loss, but it's steady, and because I can eat as much as I want, and because the food I'm eating is actually nourishing my body, it's a very easy eating plan to stick to.In addition to the weight loss, my cholesterol dropped from 190 to 154.The first week was the hardest as I worked on meal plans, and I ate a ton because the feeling of eating without added fat was so foreign to me. It took me that full week to adjust, but after that, it became second nature. All my meals take less than 15 minute to prepare (they might take longer to cook, but prep is 15 minutes or less). There is a bit of a learning curve, and you do have to make sure you keep the right foods around, especially some quick-fix go-to's; this makes it easier to stay on plan. This is by far the easiest, most effective way of eating I've ever experienced, and I feel incredibly lucky to have picked up this book.

I loved this book, it features the latest research in diabetes and how to tackle it successfully. I've read some reviews and many complain it is too strict. This tells me some are having a hard time choosing between getting rid of diabetes and losing limbs, going blind, etc., just to enjoy a meal?If you are ready and wiling to change permanently, I highly recommend this book. If you are NOT ready to change your life forever, save your money.

My A1C was a 10.1 according to the blood test results I had before beginning to follow Dr. Barnard's plan. Sixty days later my blood test results showed my A1C to be 5.6 PLUS I've lost 30 pounds while following this plan! My doctor and I are looking at medication reductions with the ultimate goal of no longer needing them. I am a firm believer in this program. I feel lightyears better and have no intentions of straying away from this lifestyle. I am living proof that Dr. Barnard's findings and plan works!

The poems are really fantastic and raw.I saw a video in which the poet recited "Ode to my Bitch face".I wasn't aware it was specifically targeted to women with other titles like, "Ode To My Period Panties" and "Ode To The Word Pussy", but as a man I can definitely appreciate the insight into some aspects of woman hood in which I have no direct understanding and will be passing it along to some of my female friends.

So... awhile ago, a student HAD to show me this video on YouTube. Normally, after watching whatever it is any student HAD to show me on YouTube, I am mildly amused, disgusted, or confused. But this student showed me a video of Olivia Gatwood reading her poem “Ode To The Women On Long Island” and I was like, “Wut?” So I asked for her collection NEW AMERICAN BEST FRIEND for Christmas. I finally read it. Let me tell you folks, my amazed “Wut?” lasted through every poem and lingers even now. Gatwood’s little poetry book from Button Poetry is strong, female, and unapologetic. It’s sad, scary, somber, and everything in between. It’s REAL in a way only the best books are real. It should be required reading for everyone. I couldn’t recommend this more if I tried. Favorite stanza? It’s from “Ode To Elise In Eighth Grade Health Class”Elise, who taught me to bury/a lighter in my fist,/so that if I ever took my shot/at least I wouldn’t break my hand/on her pretty, pretty face.#teachersofinstagram #readinglist2018 #poetry

Fantastic chapbook! I had seen some of Olivia Gatwood's work on Button Poetry and was curious to see what else she had done. "New American Best Friend" proves that her brushes with viral fame are not just luck, the girl is really talented an nuanced. I really enjoy how she approaches adolescence, puberty, and girlhood and wish I had this book as teenager. I especially enjoyed "Bubblegum or Bruise."

I don't usually buy poetry books and in my life this would be the first time I have read a full book of poetry completely. I didn't plan to read it from cover to cover, but once I picked it up, flicking through til something caught my attention. Well I was sold after that. Once it captures your attention it is hard to put down and walk away. Watch the live readings by Olivia Gatwood on youtube, they help to set the tone and style in which these poems were intended to be understood. I'm not an American but I can relate to the story she is telling and I enjoyed this collection very much.

I haven't read poetry in YEARS, but when I saw a video of the poet reading her "Ode to the women on Long Island" I had go buy her book. It just hit something in me I watched the video 3 times. I ran through the entire book in a parking lot after I stopped to read a couple poems while waiting for my coffee to get cool enough to drink. Just dog earing and laughing and cringing and feeling the most powerful gratefulness for home and childhood. It is a beautiful book, I would recommend to anyone. But I would call it a must read for any women who grew up on Long Island and wants to feel understood.

We need more bad ass, unapologetically loud mouthed women to say it like it is. I would recommend this collection of poems to anyone.

I love Olivia's poetry. I originally bought the book for myself and then ended up giving it to my sister when I had reading through it once. I bought two more copies intending to keep one and give another to a friend, but again ended up giving both away as gifts! Great workbook for toddlers learning to hold a pencil and write. I pull the pages out and slip them into a page protector and use a dry erase marker so that my kid doesn't waste pages by scribbling.

I have two kids at the ages of 4 and 2. It is easy to find activity books for my elder but not that easy for the younger. Because, no matter what the books say in terms of the target age, the activities are often to hard for toddlers to understand or perform. However this book, truly is a great activity book for 2 years onward. It has 80 pages of activities printed on high quality paper and most of them are doable by a 2 years old, of course with adult supervision and help. The activities focus on following a path with a pencil which help the kids develop fine motor skills. There are easy ones like following a straight or close to straight line or more challenging ones like following a path with turns, curves and spirals (but not as complicated as mazes in which you need to choose between alternative paths).I think 2-3 years olds would benefit the most from this book, anyone older may find it too easy. I am happy for the purchase

Neither one of my kids enjoy tracing letters. This book was a great way to build their confinence and work on fine motor skills. There are 80 colorful pages, back and front. I do wish the book had more pages. Just order a second book.

Kumon produces fun, sturdy workbooks. I've bought several for my children. I purchased this for my daughter when she was 3 or 4 and purchased another copy for my son years later. I was pretty lazy about making my kids practice their "writing" and this is pretty low-maintenance on my end. There is not much they have to "figure out". Still, though, kids can get through one page so quickly, and sometimes you're left wondering, "Is that all I'm going to get out of this?" So what I do is allow my son to do the same page over and over again. He starts with a yellow marker, then does it again in orange, then red, then darker colors. You can actually see him get better, and each color pretty much traces right over the previous color. Great way to get more use out of these!

My 3 year old granddaughter was told to 'write' her name on the valentine cards for her daycare. Obviously, the teachers would have thought any old mark was fine, but my granddaughter wasn't that flexible and was in tears. She just did not have the hand control to do those fine lines. So i bought this book. It is perfect. Not to hard but a bit of a challenge that she is well able to meet. Because she whips through the book so quickly my daughter made copies of the pages so they can be done repeatedly. She also has her use different colored markers so she can do the same exercise several times and end up with a wonderful rainbow picture. I doubt she can even begin to write her name but she has had so very many successes with "writing" thanks to this book that she is feeling pretty confident in her "writing" abilities. At 3 years old that is about the best you could hope for. I think this is an impressively designed book and it does a great job encouraging and advancing basic skills.

I needed something educational for my son to do during the weekends. This book is great. It's a nice book and good quality, not flimsy like some of the other workbooks I got him. The content is also great. In just a few pages, he already has a good grip on his pencil and is able to trace in the lines, can write a few letters already. And the best thing is, he enjoys it! It seems like a game to him and the pictures are super cute, so he actually enjoys this workbook. I plan on buying the whole series!

Bought one of these workbooks years ago for my son when he started showing interest in writing during preschool, and it was helpful for him to practice making the lines to get better control. The activities are usually to make a line from one point to another, starting with tracing a dotted line, then making the line staying in the road (for example). It has nice pictures to make in enticing. Eventually the lines get angles or curves added as the book goes on. I bought another one for my daughter when she started wanting to write in preschool, and she really enjoys it. She'll sit and practice making the lines. It could be her age, but her writing has improved. Most important is both my kids have fun doing the workbook. Bonus is they learn better pencil control.

The Kumon My First Book of Tracing is a great beginning preschool workbook designed to practice pencil skills and develop fine motor control. The initial pages involve drawing a line from one object to the other. I really like how many pages involved swirls and circles which help with beginning writing letters. The workbook requires very little instruction. Ages: The two to four years old age range is very appropriate for this workbook. I would definitely recommend starting this workbook at two years old if your child shows a lot of interest in scribbling, otherwise starting at two and a half to three years old would be fine. Pencil skills are always good practice even for a four year old. Multiple Children: A workbook is needed for each child.
