A page-a-day calendar with corresponding NYTimes crosswords, answers on the back of each sheet. The print is small, but not tiny. I’m nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other, so if you’re using readers or bifocals, your mileage may vary. The puzzles are good, and since I didn’t get this til June I can do as many (Mon, Tues, Wed) as I want, or as few as I can (argh—looking at you, Saturday) and not worry about getting ahead of myself.I also have the Little Black And White Book, which rates puzzles from one to five top hats. If you like NYTimes crosswords, that one’s good too.
Been loving these NYT daily crosswords calendars for years and the current one continues that trend/habit.
I used tho get this puzzle every year but this year some of the puzzles are simply ridiculous. For example, there are puzzles requiring full words to be a part of the answer to be placed in a single box and attached to the rest of the answer. I found some of the answers to the clues to be so far fetched. This leaves me to believe the author sat down with a thesaurus and forced words to fit the puzzle. And on some days i just threw the puzzle in the trash. I like being challanged, but there's a difference with challenging and someone being pretentious.

I've had this book for about a week now, and I can safely say that it's one of the best I have ever read. I've gone through it twice, going to give it a third read soon. I may not be the biggest degenerate, but I definitely have all the qualities described of them in this book. Brandon Adams does a great job outlining the traits of a degenerative personality and provides some extremely useful advice for improving your life while still keeping that mindset. I have long been looking for a book like this to help me out in making better decisions for the future; whether that be through better planning or just a more thorough way of weighing your options. I plan on reading more of Mr. Adam's work, I highly recommend this book.
This is the 2nd time I’ve read the book and enjoyed it even more the 2nd time around. It will be one I will read every 6 months. Can be read in 2-3 sittings and very concise, practical, and efficient delivery of high quality insight.

Lisa Jewell is an author that started reading a couple of years ago. I enjoyed her latest 2 books and felt it was time to dive into her back list. I'm not exactly sure where this falls in the order of her books, but I do think that Jewell is an author who improves with each books.Which, I guess is a nice way of saying that this isn't her best work. There is much I like about it, but I can't say it was a wholly successful book.There was much I liked about it. It was the premise that drew me into this book--a group of people who are brought together because their biological fathers were all the same sperm donor. For some reason, the maternal tie always seem to be celebrated in books (and movies...and TV...) while the paternal one is sometimes forgotten. Plus, the idea of a sperm donor seems so much less personal than, say, a mother who gave up her children for adoption or a woman who donated her eggs. I applaud Jewell for taking the road less traveled, so to say, on this topic.One thing that has always impressed me about Jewell is her ability to create characters. Lydia is especially fascinating, probably because we get the most backstory for her. I also found the convention of telling Daniel's story--Daniel is the father--through the eyes of another person. I think that was an important facet of this story and added a necessary wall between the siblings and the parent.Now, here is the flaw that kept me from thoroughly enjoying this book. I'll admit that this is something that might not bother other readers, but was an obstacle that I could not overcome. This story seemed very unbalanced. Much time was spent on Lydia and almost as much on Dean, but significantly less was spent on Robyn. In fact, there were times that I forgot she was even part of the story. There is also a 4th sibling who is dealt with a bit too casually for my taste and, as much as I enjoyed Daniel's story through Maggie's eyes, I felt Maggie's arc was wrapped up too easily.While this wasn't Lisa Jewell's best book in my opinion, it did keep my interest enough that I would still read more of her back list, as well as her new books as they are released. I would still recommend this book and I'm sure that what I found lacking would not bother many other readers.
Lisa Jewell caught my attention with The House We Grew Up In: A Novel . That book really intrigued me and prompted additional reading on hoarding disorder and is a book that has stayed with me long after I finished it. I didn't realize this was one of her previous novels until I did some research, but it makes sense now that I know.I won't go into detail and spoil the book for you, and the product description does just enough to give you a general sense of the novel.Here is my reaction after reading it: The book is a good read but not nearly as good as "The House We Grew Up In". The characters are less developed, the writing not quite as crisp, but mostly the lighter chick-lit/romance roots of the author show through. There are gaps in the story that left me wondering why and how, particularly in Maggie's storyline. Things are little too pat with little to mar the rosy outcome of the story and (my biggest complaint) deep emotions are felt immediately by everyone.Bottom line: If you are looking for lighter reading but want some exposure to a story line not dependent on romance, this would be a great choice. If you what more substance in your next selection, I would pass on this one until in the right frame of mind. Would have been a great beach book, just not one that holds up against her later efforts.
There are too many books I want to read to bother with this book. I got over 10% through this and disliked the main characters, and found the tone of the book to be negative and dull. I moved on to another book.
I read The House We Grew Up In before this one and preferred that one just because the characters were so well developed and interesting, but I liked this book as well. You can see that Jewell is developing and maturing as a writer in The House We Grew Up In, but here too she develops interesting and unique personalities. Despite not finding the characters as believable, it was still a good read and kept me interested. I appreciate Jewell taking on the topic of sperm donors and how is affects the kids who are born as a result. Found the instant bonding between the siblings just a bit too "story book" for my liking but it was a warmhearted story that was perfect for a lighter summer read.
I have read a number of the author's books and have enjoyed the mystery and " who done it" aspect brilliantly arranged throughout. This book was a major disappointment and personally, boring. The main characters were shallow and uninteresting.
Loved this book. It is a little slow to get going but as you engage with the characters it draws you in. Each of the situations were different but the reader sees into their world and wants to find out how it will all end. What was most profound was the feeling of seeing our own beginnings. Even without the confusing set of circumstances that our characters find themselves in we are reminded of our own parents and the place we belong to because of that family. Everyone wants to know who they are and where they fit in the world and that begins with our conception and who is involved in that process. How we view our world and ourselves is coloured by our beginning and ending. Even the father of these children has a sad story of not engaging with his history. Well worth a read.
The book presents some interesting perspectives on a potential problem with modern baby-making: Am I dating a sibling? Also, it brings into focus the questions from offspring, donor, and siblings of artificially insemination babies. I enjoyed the book, reading of each person's mixed emotions as they track down their biological "family." However, with the careful unfolding of each one's plight, I feel the book ended rather abruptly, and was disappointed only in that.

I bought this along with Harry Clark: his life and work. I wanted a complete picture (not to make a pun) of the man and his art after seeing the beautiful stained glass in the Honan Chapel in Cork, Ireland. This is an excellent book
Excellent catalogue of Clarke's stained glass works. Large format, comprehensive, packed with almost entirely full-color reproductions of the windows, from full frames to beautiful detail shots. If you're a fan of Harry Clarke or simply of Gothic art, this is not to be missed.

Harry Clarkes work is just amazing. His style is unique with his use of paint and light. He captures jewel like images in a illustrative way that brings out ones imagination. It is a must for any stained glass collector. He truly was a genius.

I just received this and the revised edition of Nicola Gordon Bowe's HARRY CLARKE: THE LIFE AND WORK from a friend in Rathmines, and I could not be happier.Here in the United States, Clarke tends to be best known for his simultaneously grotesque and beautiful illustrations of Poe and Goethe or his somewhat less familiar illustrations for Perrault and Andersen. His largest body of work, however, is devoted to stained glass, and this gorgeous book does full justice to that work, in which the sublime takes the center stage without entirely crowding out the grim little details for which he is most celebrated in his book illustrations.How to describe this work? Imagine a cross between the luminous display of color in the Brothers Van Eyck, the tension between candlelight and deepest gloom in Georges de la Tour, and the decadent imaginative flights of Aubrey Beardsley or Clarke's near-contemporary Sidney Sime. Although my description may conjure up an image as awkward as Horace's chimera, such is Clarke's genius and mastery of this medium that the figures in his stained glass emerge from the surrounding darkness with epiphanic power.
I received my copy of 'Strangest Genius: The Stained Glass of Harry Clarke' by Lucy Costigan and Michael Cullen, in my post yesterday. I have been reading Costigan's brilliantly enthralling text and admiring the superb photographs of Clarke's windows by Cullen. Cullen captures the look of stained glass in his photographs, to be able to do this enables him to remain faithful to the painterly strokes and magical colour work so masterfully deployed by Clarke. Within the pages of 'Strangest Genius' we have images of the windows too far away for some of us to visit, or sadly lost in fires over time. Costigan's quote's from Clarke's correspondance about the works and quotes from friends such as Thomas Bodkin are invaluable. Her descriptions of the panels are also very beautiful and perfectly compliment Cullen's magnificent photographs. Sunniva Sheridan, Harry Clarke's grandaughter has written the foreword.Many years ago, as an art student at the Crawford College of Art and Design, I was fortunate to be able to attend a guest lecture by Nicola Gordon Bowe. I have over the years acquired most of her books and treasure them like gold-dust. Over the years I have been on the look out for other works about this great artist, because Clarke is an artist who deserves to be written about by different art historians and art critics. It is always interesting to read their views on Clarke and their analyses of his works. At last we can now add another masterpiece work, because this book is a work of art in its own right, to our collection.'Strangest genius' provides a lot of new informations and insights on the artist and new images of works I have never seen before and I have been a life-long admirer of his work. It is an incredibly important work and I beg the publishers 'The History Press: Ireland', who have created such an outstanding production with this book, to please never let it go out of print. It is obvious they took great care with this production and have created not just a thing of beauty but a work that will be treasured for generations to come. I am also fortunate to have some of Harry Clarke's illustrated books. About the Author
Dr. James M. Rubenstein received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1970, M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1971, and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, where he teaches urban and human geography. Dr. Rubenstein also conducts research in the automotive industry and has published three books on the subject–The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? I have been using this book for a few months now for my class and it is definitely a nice book for learning the content. If you are looking for a easy to read book that will teach you everything you need to know than this is the right book for you.
The book was for a class on Cultural Geography. A bit expensive but....I didn't resell because it is one I will peruse and reference over and over. It looks at the subject through migration patterns, folk and popular culture, languages, religion and physical geography and how all are related. Although an excellent book for a class, it is also one world travelers would gain a lot of understanding from.
Ordered the 10th edition of this book receive the eighth edition. Does not help my son in his class at all. Sending it back hopefully will get the right book this time. What a pain.
The book arrived as expected. However, the book has tears on all corners of the cover, the content inside has highlights, a stain on the front cover, and a bent on the bottom part of the binding. Overall, it's functional. Thank you.
I know this is a rental but it looks like it has been walked on, and dropped kicked! Surprised that a rental would look like this...disappointed!
The chapters are all clearly written to stay in page allowances / fill pages. Like every chapter section fits cleanly and exactly in a spread, which feels very forced in the writing. It's a disaster to try to understand and also weirdly doesn't acknowledge colonization nearly enough.
