I come from a background in conservation and complex systems. Like the author, I have been struggling to describe the very important worldview of systems thinking and the need to apply this thinking to ecological issues. Systems science has a language of its own which has yet to be translated for effective use by those conservation people who make important ecological decisions. I think of folks like the field biologists who work with public lands agencies. Honestly, the systems science people have a long way to go in describing their critically important ideas. The author of this book makes a valiant attempt to bridge the gap but is entrapped in buzzwords and dense text. He uses the word "resilience" when he should probably be describing ecosystems and sustainability in terms of Nature's interconnections (energy conduits) that hold these systems together by transporting and transforming energy. Broken connections are the driving force behind broken ecosystems and are the cause of reduced resilience/sustainability.I can't be too harsh because I find myself with the same struggle of trying to translate the systems research work of Santa Fe Institute (and others) into useful, applicable ecological knowledge at the field level.I have same the same minor complaints as other reviewers. The editing is poor in places. Someone from the outside should have worked with the author to make the book more readable . Nonetheless, the use of good case studies did offset the dense and often technical/obtuse writing.

This is a fantastic little book. The presentation of complex adaptive systems and the things that determine how resilient they are is crystal clear and concise. My background is computer science research, with a fair amount of experience in complex systems from that angle, and this book was still excellent for putting things into simple and straightforward language without dumbing it down or skipping important connections. My other life is as a permaculture designer. If you're not familiar with that, permaculture is a discipline that seeks to build ecologically sound, self-sustaining human settlements. Currently there is very little in the permaculture literature regarding systems and resilience, and personally I think that this is the next big step forward. This book is the best introduction to those ideas that I've ever seen, and I heartily recommend it to anyone getting into permaculture design.

The author presents us a view based on resilience and provides practical examples of application of this concept existing in several areas around the world. As a beginning this book is very helpful, once most of existing ecosystems are under considerable threats and need more complex management.

This short book is an excellent introduction to resilience thinking. The core texts in this field tend to be rather daunting compendiums (see Gunderson and Holling's Panarchy) that only the already committed will read. This is a light introduction to the basic ideas and has lovely and useful case studies woven in. The core ideas of resilience thinking come from work in ecological systems theory over the past thirty years or so and are an application of work on complex adaptive systems. A key point is that natural and economic systems can only be understood and managed if their codependence is made explicit. Basic concepts such as regime (a set of connected stable states), threshold (boundaries between regimes) and the adaptation cycle (growth -> accumulation -> release -> reorganization) are well explained. The case studies cover The Florida Everglades, The Goulburn-Broken Catchment area in Australia, Coral Reefs in the Caribbean, the Northern Highland Lake District in Wisconsin and the Kristianstads Vattenrike Wetlands in Sweden. All of these cases come up frequently in conversations on resilience and are good touch points.I expect to see applications of resilience thinking to many areas beyond ecology and resource management over the next decade: it is widely relevant to organizational theory and urban planning. It will be one input to a new syntheses that replaces our current and obsolete economic theory. One small caveat, the book has some well done illustrations but the quality of the photos is dreadful.

Great topics discussed. Leans left as in progressive on its fews of the future sustainability of our ecosystem. I agreed with about 25% of the subject matter and do not agree with most of their predictive suggestions. A lot of reaching or predictable teachings.

This is a great introduction to learning about how the concept of resilience changes the approach to managing social-ecological systems. I use it when teaching introductory classes in environmental studies.

Dry reading, not current, but examples are not repetitive.

This is a wonderful book to understand the concept of resilience and its relationship with sustainability. Very well written and the study cases make easy to grasp the deep conceptual meaning of system thinking.

You will love this book. I am a homeschooling mom and wanted something for my 3 year old. The pages are fun and educational. My favorite thing is it has a hard cover and is spiral bound. This is nice because the book doesn't shut if your not holding the pages down like the other books would. Very affordable price too! For sure a 5 star.

Love. Love. Love this. My 4 year old also enjoys it. Though it teaches how to write the letters, there are also matching games and puzzles which stimulate the brain but also is a lot of fun and diverse. One thing I did was I ripped out the pages and took them to be laminated, making them dry erase! I punched holes in the edges and keep them in a 3-ring binder. Now, it's not just a one-time investment, my daughter can go over them again and again with dry erase markers. She loves them and asks to do them as an activity. I highly recommend this book. I think the quality of the instruction is great and varied and covers so many subjects. I have been looking for something like this for a long time and am so happy to have found it.

I like that it’s a three ring book, but I am very disappointed with the content of the book. It had such amazing reviews and I was expecting so much better. When I started my daughter on it I felt that the way the author uses long vowel sounds to teach the vowel sounds at the beginning and not short sounds was not a good way to introduce vowels. I have always understood that the vowels should be introduced using their short sounds only. Also on the page for letter “I” the child is supposed to circle all the pictures that have the “I” sound, Their was no variety in the pictures that have an “I” sound. It showed ice cream, ice cube, and icicle. So not only was it three long vowel sounds and no short vowel. But it was very unimaginative in the pictures options. This was not just on letter “I.” Also it has the child read a word at the bottom of each letter page. Since this is a preschool book, children do not know how to read yet, so my daughter does not know how to read the word. It feels like a waste of space on the page.

My daughter just turned four and will be starting her second year of preschool so I figured this would be good for her over the summer. Although my daughter is not "academically" where my other daughters were at her age, she is in preschool and at this point there really is no exception on what she "should know" at four. The book says Pre-K, and some of the book definitely is, but some sections seem to skip over basic things like individual letter and number identification, so evidently we are going to have to find something in addition to work on those areas. Otherwise, I like the fact you can skip around in the book, and it is definitely something we will be able to use for a long time. I also like the fact that it is very colorful and engaging.

I originally hand made an educational pre k book for my daughter to do some basic learning at home, then I was at a friend's house and saw this and immediately ordered it. It really trumps anything I could have ever made while being very well priced! My 3 year old daughter loves it too and she's already learning to write letters and her ABCs and all sorts of things. I only wish that they repeated pages throughout the book... for example.. there is only one page to learn to trace "A" and then that's it. Repetition is needed to learn to write letters and so a couple pages tracing the letter A would be beneficial.

So far, the activity sheets are age and developmentally appropriate. My child enjoys the activity sheets, making learning fun. Good quality. Easy to photocopy. However, the activities are repetitive enough that photocopying for reproduction isn't necessary for one child...but hoping to use for two kids.

Please, Please, Please, listen to me when I say I have bought MANY preschool books for my 4 year old to work in. This is so far the best one!!!!!!! The second best one I bought was Mead Preschool workbook. However, this book has LOTS of opportunities to practice writing and tracing letters and numbers and it integrates colors into the various lessons. It also reviews seasons, directions, etc...THIS CURICULUM HAS EVERY LESSON YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO BECOME PREPARED FOR AND MASTER PRESCHOOL! I buy many curriculum books so my daughter is always reviewing so I allowed her to write in this book, however if you want to give your child continued repetition and not have to buy anymore curriculum books I suggest making copies OR BUY TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM GOING TO PURCHASE GET READAY OF KINDERGARTEN next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of the 4 star + reviews are dead on! This book is wonderful and I'm happy to have added it to my resources for teaching my two year old. I truly believe it could be used alone for learning the basics in preparation for pre-school, but when paired with hands-on activities, learning themes, and other media it's a wonderful addition.I'm using it with my two year old. She's pretty far along on the learning curve, but still needs my assistance. She's enthusiastic about the activities in the book. I keep it out of reach only for when I'm working with her otherwise she'd be grabbing it.The illustrations and text are inviting and easy on the eye. The print is large. The context covers so much. I'm glad I came upon it. Would recommend to any parent who is working with their child on fundamentals to learn before entering pre-k or K.My only far-fetched wish is a laminated version - although I could tear pages out and laminate myself....

I gave this four stars because this is a look into the history of not only the crime but some of the legal system of another country. It is something I was not that familiar with until I read this book.At this late date, it is impossible to make a true determination as to how Louisa's husbands died. This book shows how little real forensics were performed at that time. Since that time, methods for handling evidence, chemical analysis, technology, and medicine have made huge advances. More is known about how diseases affect the body, diagnostics have improved, and doctors have more testing methods to accurately diagnose illnesses. Also detection of poisons and their effects are better understood. Many of the reported symptoms of both Charles and Michael are common to a number of illnesses prevalent at that time.Charles Andrews' death was most likely correctly diagnosed at the time of his death. Considering the living conditions of the area in Botany, the probable condition of the drinking water, lack of proper sewage, and the unhygienic working conditions at the time, Charles was lucky to have lived as long as he did without any serious illness.Based on the information in the book, the evidence was mostly circumstantial combined with a host of speculation based on very little scientific or medical basis in fact.No testing or investigation was performed on the soil or water around the home or in the workplaces of either Charles or Michael. It was clear that both were exposed to arsenic, viruses, bacteria, and possibly a variety of other toxins in their homes and work. The routes for pathogens was not well understood at that time nor were there many regulations regarding toxic chemicals in the work place. These could not be discounted as the cause of death for either man.No mention was made of the rat poison until the trial based on statements made by minors who had obviously been coached in their testimony. The prosecution did not produce any evidence that Louisa even purchased or borrowed rat poison. She was easily recognized in the area and no merchant or chemist testified to selling rat poison to her. No neighbors came forward stating she borrowed the poison for them.Mr Lusk did not put up much of a defense and a case could be made for an appeal based on his mishandling of the case. This shows how much a justice system can be biased against the poor who cannot afford to retain a decent lawyer and do the proper research. Unfortunately this is still the case. Most of us only have knowledge of hanging from movies where it always appears quick and efficient. This exposes the horrors of the reality that was most likely the norm. The follow up on Louisa's children was interesting. It is not often that the descendants are discussed in books on historical crimes.I also found it interesting that this case provided a tipping point for women's sufferage in Australia. The historical background on this was good. I found it a bit frightening that women were not allowed to sit on juries until 1947 in Australia. At times the book was repetitious and the style was more conversational. This lead to the structure being a bit disjointed and meandering. The syntax could have been edited to flow better. In that respect, the book read a bit like a college thesis rather than journalistic prose. However, I do recommend this to anyone who likes history or true crime. My opinion is that an innocent woman was brutally hanged for a crime she did not commit.I suggest others read it and form their own opinions.

A tragic story of injustice by the Australian government against a poverty-stricken widow. Set in the 19th century on the eve of Australian statehood and the birth of the women's rights movement. Overington's attention to detail and accuracy is to be applauded.

Ms. Overington's book is an interesting read on multiple levels. As an avid history buff, I appreciated that the book presents all sides of the issue. The introduction states that the first question to answer is whether or not Louisa Collins was guilty, then reminds us of the historical context (women could not vote, participate in government, nor earn a living wage equal to what a man could earn). Throughout the book we are introduced to a parade of participants and how their actions affected Louisa's life. The author has carefully examined the historical events, quoting only when documented and backing up her statements with many footnotes. I enjoyed the Epilogue where the author details the lives of those people who were involved in Louisa's trials. It was also interesting to examine this little slice of history and see how it helped to bring change to a country and how some people began to spread that change throughout the world.Excellently written, this is a quick and enjoyable read.

Boring in that repetitiveness. Still a good history of an interesting time in Australia's turbulent early days. I liked the way the author traced the lives of those who figured so strongly in the life and tribulations of Louisa Collins. Thge miscarriage of justice that precipitously ended this troubled woman's life is shameful. Its wider meaning is not easily missed in the story of the fight for women's suffrage in Australia. All in all a good read for only a couple dollars.

I came to the book because of the genre, but was delighted with the transition to an exploration of the history of women's suffrage in Australia. I have long appreciated the connections between the temperance movement and social justice/social service advances, and how that in turn made the need for a political base for women crystal clear. It is fascinating to see Overington make a case that much of that development in Australia found focus in a particular death penalty case. Even for a reader who knows next to nothing about Australian history, this is an enlightening glimpse into another threshold into the twentieth century.

This was great from start to finish. The most engaging true crime I've read. As a woman and attorney, I appreciated the author's bits of sarcasm throughout and her ability to tell the story without inserting her own political views. This is also a great example of strong women who persevered to gain for today's women the many rights and privileges we so often take for granted.

Historically interesting. The relentless pursuing of Louisa with such disregard for legal protocol was disturbing. I didn't know women were hanged this late in history (1800s). For me, the reading bogged down about halfway through - maybe because it seemed like each trial was a variation on the last. Sad episode in history and a contribution to women's history.
