The authors take us through Cuba’s many steps and missteps as it cleaved to this vision of freedom, starting with the 1492 encounter of Columbus and the Tainu, Ciboney, and Guanahatabey indigenous groups and concluding with more recent events through 2016. Appropriately, most attention is given to the ongoing aftermath of the 1959 revolution. Especially interesting to me is the account and analysis of how the U.S. and the Soviet Union had a protracted tug of war with Cuba as the rope; the effects on the Cuban government, economy, and culture are presented in great detail.The book is made more personal as a result of the inclusion of many anecdotes about Philip Brenner’s interactions with Cuban people, both famous and not, during his several trips to that nation. Many illustrations, photos, and maps make the reader’s experience more vivid. The appendix gives a very useful chronology of important events.What comes through with immense clarity is the authors’ love of the Cuban people and respect for their mission to retain freedom and dignity against great odds. That said, I never had the impression that this affection clouded their assessments or lessened their objectivity. Brenner gives an interesting account of Cuba 's history but does not even attempt to hide his pro Castro bias. In many places he borders on full Castro apologist. He describes the kangaroo courts after the revolution as necessary for the public to vent. He also rarely, if ever, criticizes Castro for his oppression. He goes as far as to call Cuba and the Castros altruistic . The most interesting part is probably dealing with Cuba and Soviet Union
In preparation for a future visit I read this book and learned a lot, but could not avoid concluding that it is sympathetic to Castro’s revolution. Even though it catalogues some hard truths about Cuba, it somehow leaves the impression that every hardship and failure was somehow due to outside animosity or bad luck, instead of pre-ordained by communist-style government buffoonery. Many of the author’s photos in the book, from plucky peasants enjoying their revolutionary upgrade from abject poverty to ordinary poverty, to balcony views of the Cuban Communist Party assembly, obviously speak to an observer with a very good long term relationship with the Cuban government. This alone prejudices the value of the book as an impartial academic study. It fails to explain Castro’s transition from heroic Batista foe to communist dictator, and his political prisoners are barely mentioned, while the shameful US government actions with regard to expatriate airline bombers gets lengthy examination. An incautious reader will learn a lot of Cuban historical events, but may come away thinking that a good-intentioned tyrant is just what this country needs.

When she becomes distracted in the middle of the audition at the thought that Ren might have feelings for her rival Yumika, she loses focus and flubs the audition, earning the producer's ire. But surprisingly enough, it's Moko who comes to her rescue and saves the day! Erika, meanwhile, is watching very carefully in the background - ready to step in if Yumika tries more underhanded tricks to get the role from under Kyoko.There are several plots going on with this volume. Ren being confronted with an image of Sho stealing a kiss from Kyoko - and the realization it happened just before he talked with her that night. Erika watching the person who handicapped her and making sure Yumika's plans do not come to fruition. Kyoko falling for Yumika's misdirections and thinking that Ren has feelings for her - and that Yumika takes them for granted. Useful advice, but watch the publication date - some comments are outdated.
not great for personal statement examples. all of them seem to be prior to electronic AMCAS as almost all PSs are 6,000-10,000 characters long
Very informative. I'm pre-med cell and molecular biology and this provided a great amount of useful information to help me.
Bought this book over four years ago... can't understand why they want me to write a review on it NOW. Honestly never read the book, or opened it after I figured out how to get into medschool.
I was once a paranoid premed who needed some guidance on how to pursue my dream. This book acts as a detailed guide to the medical path. Sometimes the book gets a little too specific on some of the "rules" (i.e. how to pack your clothes with attached diagrams), but these are only suggestions. Sometimes, these specifics are really helpful if you're clueless on what to do. This is an excellent book and I have already recommended it to some of my premed friends.
This books gives one information on how to prepare for medical school since the time one is in high school. Check list of things to do all throughout college and/or high school to get ready for the ultimate goal: Medical School.
Now that I am in I am writing reviews on these books. The reviews for this one must have been written by the publisher. My friend lent me this one because he told me to save my money. You can spend alot of time reading this and not getting much from it. Better to spend time studying for the MCAT's and reading a more concise admissions book. Rec. Princeton Review and Insider's Guide by Toyos.
This book has A LOT of information in it, and is very helpful. I think it is worth the price.

Personally I think this book should be on every desk of every Visual Basic programmer. I think that it is laid out well and the examples in the book are easy to follow. This is not a book that you read before bed or that will keep you up at night with the plot twists but it does what it says. Essentially this is a refrence book on the applications programmers interface which is the backbone of the Windows OS. This is an updated version of the book meant for VB6 users but it could be used by older versions of the lanquage. Essentially it is *the* book to have if you are serious about VB6 programming.
I would not think of doing without Dan's API guide.I started Windows in 1991 with C and SDK. In those days you had to learn the API to get your work done. But, after VB 3.0, I got completely away from C and intimate knowledge of the API. Dan's book de-mystifies the Win32 API.New and intermediate VB programmers will find his explanations easy to follow. Dan tells you why things work the way they do and warns about any pitfalls using VB for API calls. (There are not many problems, but they do exist.)I you have not got this book and you are serious about VB, I recommend you get it.
(((Warning))) There are Bonus Chapter and Utilities Tools in CD-Rom, which not in the book.Beware , Buying the this book without CD-Rom.

This book is great! Covers a lot on the windows 32bit API, nice.
I bought a used copy. It came complete with the cd-rom and was in good shape. The book contains al the ins and outs you may need. Just perfect!
The book is new.(NEW) I like it, because the book is new as describe But the packing is not good, because the CD is cracked.(can not use) Anything else is good.
Disclaimer: our public library only had the edition for VB4 (1996, I think), and the CD was mostly unreadable so I couldn't get to many of the examples.I've programmed in more than half a dozen languages on at least as many machines and I didn't think this book was as great as everyone here is making it sound. Maybe the newer edition is a lot better. I thought the author couldn't decide whether he wanted to give an exposition on how Windows works or on what his example programs were all about, or provide a thorough reference on API function calls. The compromise approach -- a little of both -- didn't seem very satisfactory.The pages of code were both mind-numbing and needless. The chapter on memory explained how to get memory, but had nothing on what to do with it once you got it! The function reference sections, which could have been the basis for a really excellent book, were too short and cryptic. I found his writing style confusing in spots and there were numerous digressions before he actually got to the topic of the section heading. Maybe this is the best book on this subject out there (as some seem to think), but it only rated about a 6 out of 10 on an absolute scale for programming books and seemed to need a serious re-writing to excise the needless repetition (and re-repetition). There were several topics I wanted info on which were nowhere to be found. A 1200 page book should be better IMO. Perhaps beginning API programmers will get a lot out of it. 3 1/2 stars.

Very poorly written. This book repeats the same information over and over and is full of spelling and grammar errors.
