The first Black American in the NHL tells his story ― now in trade paper Val James received his first pair of skates for his 13th birthday and by 16, he left his home in New York to play in Canada, where he was the only black person on his junior team and, often, in the whole town. While popular for his tough play and winning personality, the teenager faced racist taunts at opposing arenas. The prejudice he encountered continued at all levels of the game. He became the first African American NHLer when he took to the ice with the Buffalo Sabres in 1982, and in 1987 he was the first black player of any nationality to skate for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his two NHL stints, James defined himself as a team player known for his pugilistic skills. As featured in a Fox News Black History Month documentary, on NHL.com, NPR’s Morning Edition, ESPN’s Olbermann, and in Newsday, the L.A. This book was written well and takes you through an interesting story of a black kid from Long Island who became a professional hockey player. The racist taunts he got from players and fans were heartbreaking and made you root for Mr. James. It also painted a vivid picture of what life as a minor league hockey player was like in the 70s and 80s. The reason I did not give this book five stars is because I was left wanting more. For example, Mr. James was close to making the NHL for years (played in the AHL, the next league down), how did he feel about this? Wouldn't it be frustrating being on the outside looking in for years? Another question I had were his relationships with those in the African American community, did he have fans? Was he ignored? Was he ridiculed by them for playing a "white" sport? Finally, what was his life like after retirement? Was he financially OK? Where did he live?Anyway, if it was a lousy book I wouldn't care so it wouldn't be an issue. The thing is, the story was compelling enough that I wish the authors had given us more information.
I purchased this book recently and read it over a vacation. The book covers the trail of career from a Long Island rink Vals father worked at, through his minor (youth) hockey, minor pro and the games he played in the NHL.To re-state the fact, he was the first American born African American player to play in the NHL.A lot of the book deals with the race based abuse Val had coming up through the ranks of the game. But he also had a lot of the same experiences most young men did coming up through the game, with a lot of the same pranks and adventures.Val was a tough hombre, but he also was persistent and followed his dream. He could have had more time in the NHL and was not given proper use in my opinion. So much of a career is dependent on teams management and coaching and ownership. The Leafs were always a team in the bright spotlight of scrutiny and pressure. I believe at the time ( by Val's jersey) were owned by the legend (both good and bad) Harold Ballard. Yeah things were a bit wacky under that regime.I had previously been involved in a book project about minor league hockey in a specific city and am always looking for hockey biographies and inside stories on the game and players particularly from previous eras. Much of Val's story may have been lost in time and it was indicated that some has been omitted for discretion. It took some luck as well as persistence to find him, a small story in itself. As my headline implies, I wish the book was twice as long, it was that entertaining and touching for me. Congratulations Val for having your story finally told, its well worth the price
Make sure you are comfortable with profanity before allowing your children to read this book. While the age range suggests this book is appropriate from a reading level perspective for kids in roughly grades 4-8, the content and language certainly may not be. This depends on individual views I guess, but the 'f word' is used regularly as are others. I also purchased the audio version for car rides, so reading it AND hearing it is a double whammy from my perspective. I just was not at all expecting this when purchasing for summer reading for my 7th grader. As far as a book review overall, it is a good read for boys in particular who aren't wild about reading and if your son happens to be obsessed with ice hockey, he will likely enjoy it, but just beware the language at the outset.
I loved the candor of this book, I mean Mr V. just told it like it was! The only thing I couldn't appreciate about this novel was all the accolades at the end. If the people thought so highly of Mr. V., why didn't he get more time in the pros? Also why didn't any of them do anything when the crowds at various stadiums were calling out the "n" word? America is an ill country due to their racist ways! It's real, sad when a person can't enjoy the sport they love because some ugly people think they don't belong. As for me I'm very proud Mr. V. was a hockey player! A black hockey player how great, thanks for this fantastic book Mr, V. By the way I really enjoyed the pictures as well.
Great story from a former Suffolk Duck defense partner. Skidmore... Brophy ... all great memories of a time long gone. It was an honor to play with this inspirational legend and being coached by Brophy. I still have a scare on my knuckle from a brawl were my defense partner Val pulled me out of the scrap by my collar. He lifted me up off my skates and placed me back down. That’s teamwork... I am sending this book to my older brother who played in the Met league.
I would highly recommend this book to any person who loves the game. This is a fantastic story of perseverance resilience and heart. I never even knew his name before reading this book and now I have so much respect for this man after everything he had to go through to achieve his dream. If u want a brutally honest portrayal of a kid who whatever had to be done to achieve his dream this is the book for you. I would give this a thousand stars if I could.
An excellent account of the trials and tribulations of a young man in his attempt to gain success in professional hockey. When one considers the fact he was black where a very small percentage are black, the treatment from fans could be merciless . He literally fought his way from the lowest levels to the ultimate top of the hockey world - the National Hockey League. He paid his dues in a time that fighting was considered by many as the easiest route to success, he showed that he under that he would be the target of many fighters seeking to boost their reputations. He started late when compared to Canadian kids but through his constant drive but through perseverance and constant drive to meet his ultimate objectives he rode buses for years and eventually met success.The book is sometimes written in some cases from the viewpoint of the language of the hockey dressing room. Consequently, ther reader should not be shocked.I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend in showing one of the difficult hockey life as one strives to make it to the NHL .

I bought this for my eleven-year-old daughter, even though it says for 5 to 10 year olds. She wanted to do a Marian consecration but I think Father Gaitley's book was a little beyond her (not that she couldn't read and comprehend it, but it was more than she could handle). She likes it; though there is some subject matter that is explained as if for the first time with which she is already familiar, she says she does not feel as though it is talking down to her. It's easy enough that she has stayed on track thus far on her own without any prompting from me. We are doing our consecration together this year (me renewing and she for the first time) so when it comes time we will do the final steps together and then maybe as I am going on pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes I will get her something to wear as a reminder!

The cover is gorgeous and the short sections are accompanied inside by lovely line drawings which complement but don't distract from the purpose of the book.Dr. Gress has done her Mariology research and presents it in an accessible way for children. While our family is still working through the book, it's important to note that the book gives children the responsibility to DO something through reading the book, to consecrate themselves to Mary. It's not just a storybook but an activity and dedication, more than only spiritual reading. Each section comes with discussion questions, interesting facts, and prayers. Familiar children's stories like Anne of Green Gables, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Chronicles of Narnia are used to impart lessons and stories of saints are also included.We received the book as a gift and I've already ordered three more for First Communion gifts. I absolutely love introducing others, especially children, to the idea of Marian consecration and there is no better way than through this book! As the cover says, the book should be "bringing Mary to life in young hearts and minds."

I bought this book to read to my children during the month of May, to help prepare them for consecrating themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's divided into 33 short "conferences", one to be read each day of the month, ending with the Consecration on Day 34. While some of the conferences are probably very beautiful and inspiring, my kids will never know -- unless they first chug through 18 children's classics as a prerequisite to consecrating themselves to Our Blessed Mother! Sound weird? Yeah, to me too.When I purchased this book, I'd read in the blurb that the author uses a few children's stories to make some of her points. But I was totally unprepared for and very dismayed by the many, many references to fiction books sprinkled throughout. When I picked it up and started reading aloud Day One to my sons, I stopped short at the second paragraph. The entire rest of the conference talked about nothing but the lion character, Aslan, in the Chronicles of Narnia, comparing him to Christ. My boys aren't into fantasy and have never read the Chronicles of Narnia. A little upset, I flipped to Day Two. The story of Aslan continued. Okay, so jump to Day Three. By this time, I was really hoping the author would start talking about Our Lord or Our Lady. Nope. All of a sudden we have a new character, Digory, from the book "The Magician's Nephew." To say I was getting frustrated is an understatement. The spell of reading to my sons had been broken, and I was starting to wonder what kind of book I'd spent my money on. I sent them off to play while I rifled through the next few conferences. FINALLY one was about Our Lady and the Annunciation, which came at Day Four. Immediately following, on Day Five, was a long reference to the characters in the novel, Little Lord Fauntleroy, comparing Cedric's love of his mom to Christ's love for His Mother. My sons had not read that book either. Great.By this time I was pretty dismayed. I looked in the index and discovered that the author compares Our Lady's life and devotion to Her to no less than EIGHTEEN children's books, everything from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (I jest not) to Green Eggs and Ham and Winnie-the-Pooh. Out of the eighteen books referenced, my sons were only familiar with four of them. Even of those four, I couldn't figure out what on earth they had to do with loving the Blessed Virgin at all. My heart sank as I realized I would be skipping many of the conferences in this book, unless I waited a year and read all those novels to my children first.I put the book on the shelf and haven't picked it up since. I somehow doubt I ever will. It could have been such a beautiful treasure, but instead it was extremely disappointing.
Beautiful book for children to introduce them to Marian Consecration. We have 5 boys ages 10 - 6 months so we read it aloud together as a family. We all enjoyed the presentation, beautiful artwork, discussion questions and prayers.
This book is incredibly beautiful. We bought it for our kids but they’re a little young for the intended age so we’ll be waiting a while to use it with them. My husband and I enjoyed the reflections though!
This book is great. It’s approachable with kids, as it contains references to other children’s stories like the Lord of the Rings. My 8 and 10 year old girls loved this.

While I enjoyed both the book and the audio, the overall book seemed less developed than the past three on Kolt Raynor. In some ways the action was non-stop but at the same time, there were sequences which could have added to the story that were glossed over. For instance, it was never explained how the North Korean that Kolt was sent to rescue had as much specific information about the nukes and missile sites. In a country where secrecy and paranoia are practically a religion, this would have helped create additional depth. The two themes concerning Hawk and the combining of the unit with ST6 were sometimes covered well and at others sketchy. However, I did enjoy the book and hope his next is better written.
As long as we waited for this book to come out it seems poorly written. A couple more scrubs through the editor may have made some incoherent parts better.The story, really a very short plot. Almost played out like a bad action movie. Suit case nukes threaten the pacific fleet and kolt raynor, the squadron commander has to get the guy who may know something about them. Just seemed thin and less developed than past books. The real action in this book was glossed over. Could there not have been a hundred more pages on the SEALS, or the extraction or the actual resolve of the over arching plot? Nah, 4Pages here and there about one characters unimportant thoughts. Hope for a better plot next time
Great book! This series continues with Racer doing his own thing again this time trying to rescue a North Korean who has information on nukes that have targeted on our ships and West coast. I'm happy to see Hawk, Slap and Digger back on this adventure. There is so much action and different scenes taking place that to describe them all would take too much time, I highly recommend you read these books in order to get a feel for all the characters.
As usual this is another excellent book. In an effort to help improve the series I would like to focus on two issues that drive me nuts. The first is the one needles dialog and sometimes repetitive detail about what some one is wearing or seeing. The only benefit is I get to skip pages.The other thing is the poor editing for timeline. As one example the Korean with the teletype. The description of having to dust it off not having been used in years when in fact it was the third message sent from that machine in a sort time. Someone wasn't doing there job. This happens other times in the book. It's like someone won't take the time for a final read to insure flow. A similar timeline issue on the chopper.
Fury certainly knows how to spin a tale. His books are nearly nonstop action. However, that being said, Dalton forgets who his audience is.I'm a 20 year military vet, and even i can't understand huge portions of the book. Dalton seems to assume that his readers consist of Seals or Delta. He uses language that only they would understand, with absolutely no explanation given to the average reader.Dalton, if you truly want to be a successful author, LEARN and understand who your readers are.
Dalton Fury [nom de plume] delivers again a fast paced powerful story that is both hard to put down but rather uncomfortable in that it portrays a world that the mass media chooses to ignore.It makes one appreciate the tier one men and women who are fighting for us in the shadows.I found it left me as always in admiration of our warriors and disgusted with our politicos in and out of the military who seek only to advance their careers. Be in no doubt this is a true action novel with I presume more truth than fiction.
Like everything else he writes... personally I'd give it a 4.5 because it's not as good as the first three but still great. It's sad he passed away. I hope he has a friend who can take over who is just as creative who can write just as good as him.R.I.P. Dalton Fury

Just restored my Hammond synchronous postal telegraph clock. This book was extremely useful; pictures and narrative covered every step. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering restoring this type of clock.
have used it to repair Hammond clocks - I have six or eight of them - and for an amateur - this book served my needs.
Easy to read, good photographs, clear explanations. Fun to work with. I would have rated five stars if I could find precise instructions on how to align the motor stators around the rotor upon reassembling the clock. Took me a while to figure that out.The book describes the American versions (110V / 60z) and though my European clock (230V / 50z) is a little bit different I could follow all the instructions well.

Good book. I followed the directions and successfully repaired a sealed Hammond clock motor. And then I disassembled the rest of the clock for cleaning and re-lubrication. Excellent book.

This book has definitely changed the way that I engage my personal health.Cons: The author seems to attempt to "Plug" and "Sell" a considerable amount of items that he favors throughout the book (a heads up for those that may be turned off by such a constant presentation).Pros: Great information concerning exercise, personal health, and healthy thinking about staying in shape for the entirety of ones life. It does the body, mind, and lifestyle good.I recommend this book.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book which covered fitness and recovery tips, the importance of sleep...etc. Then in the second half the author begins to talk about electromagnetic bracelets and thousand dollar “earthing blankets†along with a exhaustive list of suppliments he recommends. Any one with a family and middle-uppermiddle class income would not be able to afford the supps he recommends (like $80 amino acids), so he lost me on the entire second half of the book. Good read for rounding out your knowledge on Triathlon training. My fav take away is how we need to train to LAST, not just perform,becuase those training methods and diets can differ, so we need to limit the damage done to our bodies by them.
There is so much freaking information in this book! I've read many endurance training/performance books and this is what I've been missing. I'm currently reading this book a second time and am realizing I missed a few things the first time through it. There is just so much information, that it's difficult to retain with just one read. If you are looking for the book that provides structured training for your specific sport, this isn't that book. This is the book that goes with that book.The core of this book is about maximizing performance without destroying your body. It has helped me find the balance between performance, health and longevity, to the point that I consider it life changing. If you are a hard charging endurance athlete, you may read some things that you don't want to hear, but don't fear Ben provides an endless supply of methods and biohacks for minimizing the damage while maximizing performance.If you are looking for every possible thing that you can do to maximize performance, recovery, and health, this is a book for you. There is just so many biohacks and methods in this book that it will be difficult to implement them all. The book gives you the tools so you can pick and choose what works best for you.When it comes to new Science, newly released studies, or new hacks, Ben leaves no stone unturned and doesn't hesitate getting out on the fringe. This book has been out a couple of years and new information is continuously coming out validating many of the training and recovery methods laid out in the book. I hope and expect to see many revisions to this book since knowledge on this subject is continuously evolving.This is a book that will always stay within close reach to be used as a reference. I so wish that I had this book 10 years ago!!!Thank you Ben for all the research and work that went into this book!
I enjoyed the 1st section about how overtraining is literally killing professional and semiprofessional endurance athletes: type A personalities who try to balance 20+ hour weekly workouts with family and career and destroy everything in the process...yes, been there, done that...have many friends who are still doing it...I also enjoyed the info about creating more efficient, smarter workouts-this section was actually a breath of fresh air.Unfortunately, much of the rest of the book is simply bewildering and overwhelming. There' no question about Greenfield's passion about this subject. But even if you read through it (as I did) with the attitude that "I believe you Ben...everything you have to say...just tell me what I have to do"..ignoring the pages and pages of medical and scientific data, much of the advice is about the use of supplements and pharmaceuticals, expensive medical procedures, and the purchase of expensive/questionable exercise and health devices; as well as lots of "crazy uncle" advice: ground yourself to the earth's frequency when you sleep, wear magnetic bracelets, replace your shaving cream with $20/7 oz. tube of brown sticky paste to avoid getting poisoned, etc...That being said, I waded through the book and found a few, valuable nuggets of info that more than justify the purchase price.Use what works and discard the rest.
I'm not huge in the exercise department, but I'm really interested in healthy living and find that Ben Greenfield's advice is well in line with other trusted and reliable materials I've read (and that includes the information he presents on proper exercise techniques/training protocols). There's so much misinformation out there, and it's encouraging that someone is clearing up the myths (and in one convenient book too). I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any athlete, especially those putting in hours upon hours at the gym... Doesn't hurt that the book is well written and presents all the information very clearly...

Uncle Scrooge is one of the all-time great comic creations. A miserly duck with endless money has limitless potential for humor and Carl Barks never fails to capitalize. Volume 14 contains Uncle Scrooge stories beginning with September 1954. The book hits the ground running starting off with the title story, “The Seven Cities of Cibolaâ€. George Lucas has admitted that this story was the inspiration for the opening scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark†where Indian Jones triggers a rolling stone by removing an idol. I also assume this story was the foundation for the opening tale in the 1987 series Duck Tales where Uncle Scrooge and his nephews find a massive city of gold and treasures. It’s a great story but I had to laugh and groan at the ending. Back in the day writers used to use the tired old trope of a bonk on the head causing loss of memory. In a hilarious bit of plot convenience all five members of the Duck family plus the Beagle Boys get hit by flying debris, as Cibola collapses, causing them all to forget its existence. This is to explain why they didn’t simply dig it back up. I’ll give Barks the benefit of the doubt and assume he wrote it to be humorous rather than lazy.If you’re reading this review then I assume you are at least mildly interested in Disney comics and if you are this purchase is a no brainer. I can only assume this is the finest presentation this material has ever received and the price is great for what you get. For completionists this is perfect because eventually Fantagraphics will be producing every single Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge story ever produced by Carl Barks. That will be a massive amount of material but given Carl Barks consistency at producing high quality it’s worth it. That is if you have the storage space for it all. The only thing I can imagine that might irk purists is that the images are significantly cleaned up from how they appeared in the comic books. As far as I’m concerned I much prefer seeing the images as the artist intended not as they appeared limited by printing technologies and budgets from 1954. I think it would be the rare reader who would be disappointed with this series.
When I was a kid I had an old original copy of the "seven cities" comic book (that had been my father's), and it was my favorite story.This collection accurately reproduces the original. The images give a similar feeling to the original, and the printing is a good medium between over-modernization and the original low-resolution half-tone printing.These are great adventure stories from a time when books and comics were the only way to get that "Indiana Jones" experience. And of course this book contains the story that inspired the beginning of the first Indiana Jones movie.There's also a lot of the feeling (and several plot points) of the Seven Cities story in the 1999 Brendan Fraser movie "The Mummy" and I highly recommend the one for fans of the other.It's really delightful to find these stories available once again to inspire new generations.G.
I used to read these stories as a child. I remember loving them, and spending many hours of fun by myself reading the adventures of Donald Duck, McScrooge, Rockerduck & Co. I wish I still had my original books!I’m now happy to share the same adventures with my kids, both under 11, and to see them enjoy these old tales just as much as I did! It brings back memories while fostering new ones. These stories are lighthearted, easy to understand, and capturing. I am planning on slowly buying them all and rebuild my old collection.Carl Barks, Giovan Battista Carpi, Don Rosa, you name it. I love them all.
Other reviewers have said it all; Carl Barks' Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics are fantastic in their art and stories. The stories themselves are timeless adventures, where humor and a bit of real-world history is presented in a way that doesn't speak down to younger readers, and doesn't make adults feel like they're reading kid comics. This is my second volume of many that I plan on purchasing, much appreciation to Fantagraphics for making this series possible!
I grew up with the comic books that included the duck stories of Carl Barks. It is wonderful to relive them again in this series of books. Not just the stories themselves but reproductions of cover art. At the end of the book you’ll find short histories of each story and one-pager including any art that had been changed by Barks himself to tighten the story or at the request of his publisher. My one complaint is that the book is listed as being for a maximum age of 12 and at over 70 years of age I’m enjoying them with an older eye that notices deeper meanings and subtle humor to the stories than I did as a youngster.
These stories are beautifully written and drawn. I first read them as a child, but I think I enjoy them more now. I'm grateful they're still available to the public. Suggestion to readers: look carefully at each panel, notice the choices that Barks makes. Everything is done with great care. Suggestion to Amazon: please produce more of these volumes in Kindle format.
As always, the stories from Carl Barks are quite enjoyable. They were written in a heyday of these Disney classic comics, possessing a sharper humor than we usually see in today's stories for youngsters. I haven't been a youngster for quite awhile but these are still a fun read.
Grew up on these comics. Carl Barks was a fantastic story teller and illustrator. Tho a kid the first time, the 50's, the stories were educational as well as interesting and escapist. These books have done a great job in restoring the original art and color and include interesting background information on the artists / writer and the story behind the story. Great to revisit old friends and find the stories still interesting 60 years later. Looking forward to more releases of Carl Barks' work.
