The names of many of those lawyers will be familiar to today's lawyers because they are still part of iconic "white shoe" firms still thriving on the American legal scene - Paul Cravath, (Algernon) Sullivan & (William) Cromwell, Charles Evans Hughes, George Wickersham, John W. Davis and many others. The term "white shoe", according to the author, derives from the white bucks favored (in summer presumably) by this cadre of elite lawyers. However, despite the image this conjures of Gatsby-era frivolity, the book makes clear that these guys (all men in those early days) were mostly tough as nails and ruthless - they had no choice if they wanted to win the confidence of the likes of Morgan and his fellow barons who were often at each others throats. To thrive in these circles, the white shoe lawyers had to be hard-headed businessmen as well as creative lawyers. The giant corporations increasingly required close legal supervision to help them navigate the thicket of growing governmental regulation and to control their most rapacious urges - not an easy task. I found the book to be entertaining as well as informative. The author writes with an eye out for the humorous angle to many of the conflicts. For example, in the course of telling the fascinating story of the high stakes battle between Edison and Westinghouse over whose brand of electrical current (AC current vs DC current) would be adopted as the American standard, the author recounts that Edison (the DC proponent) suggested that AC current be used in the first execution by electric chair in New York State - ostensibly to institute a more humane form of capital punishment than hanging, but really to associate AC current with the dangers of electrocution in the public's mind. The execution went forward in August 1890 but was bungled. The subject, a convicted murderer named Kemmler, was declared dead after receiving seventeen seconds of AC charge, but as it turned out he was still alive, requiring another eight agonizing minutes of jolts of 2,000 volts that burned him to death. The author's research uncovered Westinghouse's sardonic observation following this gruesome fiasco - "they would have done better using an axe." Westinghouse's AC system subsequently won the day, as we all know.I recommend this book certainly to lawyers, as an interesting primer on how the modern law firm system emerged and evolved, but also to laymen, as a new look at the personalities and dynamics which transformed the Gilded Age and forged it into the momentous industrial behemoth of twentieth century America.

This book provides a lot of patterns based on different Native American tribal designs. I also like that they suggest bead colors as I am a beginner and a little color challenged. The book discusses bead weaving (using a loom) and applique beading (on fabric), but if you're a beginner you'll probably have to look on YouTube for more info. I think this is more of a pattern/design book than a how-to bead book. I am actually to try to use these patterns for embroidery, which I think is also doable.The first part of the book presents designs for bead weaving and the second part presents designs for applique beading. There are more designs for bead weaving than for applique beading.There is no table of contents or index, so if you're looking for designs from or inspired by a particular tribe you have to page through the book. Here's a list of tribes covered. I've tried to be as accurate as possible but provide no guarantee to accuracy. The tribe names are those as printed in the book. This book is accurate as a representation of Native American Art. The patterns are easy to follow no problems there. If you want color patterns just take out your color pencils and color it in. The cost of the book is as it should be I have no problem there. Remember our native peoples only had so many colors available and the beads were roughly made from sea shell and bone not glass. These patterns meant something to the weaver and those tribes wearing them. I am enjoying these creations. These are a teaching point to our children and grandchildren.
This book contains the patterns for many of the tribes as well as color schemes taken from the original work in museums. It has a special area in the rear of the book for the applique patterns. This book is not for beginners.
I bought this for my niece. It's hard to follow for children (she's 10), but would be great for older kids or adults. Great explanations & patterns!
I do not do beadwork but I am a gourd artist. I got this book last month to get ideas for patterns on my gourds. I really like the book because the author has also given the name of what Nation/Tribe the bead patterns came from. The patterns are large enough to see details. For those who do beadwork she has also included complete instructions and color keys. I will also be using some of these patterns for closed coiling designs on top of some of my gourds.
Charts in black and white. Using colored markers to make the charts easier to read.
I'm always happy to have new patterns to use for making moccasins or jewelry and this book had some that I'd not used before. Good price too.
Fast secure shipping. I'm using this for beading ideas for clothing for the American Girl Kaya. My only complaint was none of the pictures, except on the front and back cover, were in color. Great reference book.

Excellent read.This book contains two different writing styles, both boasting an admirable command of the English language. The first parades more of an artistic personality and the other displays a bit more the training of an intellectual and free thinker. They are two books in one, the first half is written by Asifa, and the second by her fantastic companion, David.Asifa and David were thirsty for an adventure, consequently they joined the Peace Corps (PC), and page by page they lead us through their journey. In the comfort of my air conditioned and while lapping at my Colombian coffee I laugh, wonder, worry, and learn, alongside them, through the magic of the leaves of their book.Asifa learned that these “new relatives†that she just met wash their behinds with their left hand, therefore, they only eat with their right . . . but, she “has seen those left hands come up to help the right hand from time to time.â€David feels that Chronic beerlessness is a serious problem in the village, leading to weight loss and a disturbing clarity of mind. And, apparently, while in Mali, David, instead of dreaming of fame and fortune he dreamt of clean horizontal surfaces.After reading this book I am so glad that I am not a woman, specially a woman giving birth in Mali, because : “ . . . as she nonchalantly grabbed a pair of surgical scissors and just snipped the vagina of the birthing mother. No anesthetic, no antiseptic, no warning. . .â€
My husband and I both could not put this book down. When Asifa's delightful stories about her experiences as a senior in the Peace Corps came to an end, we could not wait to read David's.I thought Asifa did a masterful job of describing both her surroundings and her own reactions to them. I could feel her frustration as she dealt with the problems of rural and even urban Mali. David's writing was more of a practical explanation of what was going on, but it drew us into his feelings as well. Having these two different sets of insight about what was going on gave a much fuller picture than one would have done by itself.An excellent look at today's Peace Corps and how two older Americans worked within it.

The author brought to life the adventure, cultural experiences and at times potential danger of living in a foreign country. She shared her struggle to learn the language, culture and how to navigate the everyday necessities of life -- food, water, cooking, bathroom....wait a minute, what bathroom? It's certainly not our understanding of the necessities of life. The tales of travel hardships, the colorful characters she met and the people she helped gave this book a vividness I enjoyed very much and helped me to understand how much the people of Peace Corp are giving to the world.
This is a wonderful book. Asifa and David tell the story of their choice to join the Peace Corps and serve in Mali, West Africa with great heart and humor. At an age when many are preparing for retirement, this couple joins young volunteers in one of the poorest countries in the world. But they discover a kind of wealth as they struggle to find a means of being of service in a way that really matters. Along the way, they encouonter fascinating people, elaborate greeting rituals, joking cousins, and ultimately friends and family. And did I mention the dust and the heat? The picture of Asifa brooming the dust out the apartment daily and David riding his bike to work under a 120 degree sky remain emblazened in my brain. I am just left, however, with a feeling of immense gratitude for getting to know Mali and Malians.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I'm packing for Peace Corps The Gambia and although it's not the same country, it is comforting reading stories from RPCVs and the journey they went through. Before reading this Mali wasn't a country on my to visit list and now it's one that I look forward to visiting hopefully in the near future.

Gitlitz and Davidson report trial testimonies in which crypto-Jews?those who secretly struggled to maintain their Jewish identity and customs?were betrayed by what they ate, what they wouldn't eat and how their food was prepared. Recipes reconstructed for today's kitchens include dishes such as Isabel Gonzalez's Eggplant and Onion Stew and Blanca Ramierez's Meatball Stew. Another revealing dish is Radishes and Stuffed Crop, skin from chicken necks stuffed with radishes and herbs. The "secret Jews" are the Iberian Jews who were forcibly converted to Catholicism under the Spanish Inquisition but still maintained Jewish religious practices in the privacy of their homes. Since this was strictly forbidden, the courts devoted a lot of time to ferreting out the "secret Jews," using the testimony of neighbors, servants, and family members. The authors, specialists in Spanish history and culture, have written a meticulously researched scholarly work focusing on this aspect of the Inquisition, using a variety of primary sources but relying mostly on the testimony of those questioned and often sentenced to imprisonment or worse. From these sources, they have re-created dozens of medieval recipes. While their efforts to discover and preserve this aspect of Jewish heritage are laudable, perhaps the idea of a cookbook was misguided. A recipe headnote that concludes "Maria went to the stake on November 20, 1486" is unlikely to make many readers feel like making Maria Sanchez's Greens. I came across this in the shelves the other day and was mesmerized. David Gitlitz and Linda Kay Davidson are a husband and wife team and teachers at the the University of Rhode Island. David is a past winner of the 1996 National Jewish Book Award, and he is a specialist in aljamas (jewish neighborhoods), the converso/crypto Jews, the anusim (forced converts) and the meshumadim (willing coverts). Using cookbooks and Inquisition documents in Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan (including the rare 13th Century Al Andalus cookbook of the Cocina Hispano-Magribi), the authors have recreating over 90 recipes of the Converso jewish community. During the Inquisitions in the Iberian peninsula, Jews and Moslems were killed, exiled, or converted. Some of the converted remained Jewish or Moslem and became Crypto-Jews, Crypto-Moslems, or Conversos. Spain expelled Jews in 1492 (you know, when Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue); Portugal expelled Jews in 1497. The recipes are well categorized, and make use of lamb, beef, fish, eggplant, greens, turnips, chickpeas, as well as mace, cinnamon, ginger, lavender, rue, portulaca, and dozens of other spices. Most recipes include histories and characters of the period, which is the prime motivation to purchase this book. She was arrested in 1505 for this crime. There is also Juan de Teva's Roast Lamb dish. Juan's father was a rabbi who was burned to death i n1484. The authors also include the Roast Chicken with Fruit and Almori recipe of Anton de Montoro. Senor de Montoro was a rag merchat in Cordoba, but is most well known as being the converso poet to the Court of Queen Isabel of Castile. De Montoro was accused of preparing stuffed radishes (a Jewish dish) and Pollo Judio (jewish chicken). Easily, this is among the top three Jewish Cookbooks of the year.
I was excited when I first heard about this book, but when I got a copy, I was quite disappointed.First the good... the recipes produce tasty dishes.But they are not the recipes of Spain's Jews, secret or public.These are recipes invented by the authors with a minimum of supporting evidence, or, in fact, most of the time, none at all.They are based for the most part on the testimony of people who turned in Conversos for being "secrect Jews". The mere mention of, oh, say, chick peas and honey, has led the authors to invent a recipe that includes these ingredients.If you are truly interested in the history the food eaten by Spain's Jews, you will not learn much. If you want some nice Spainish-style recipes eaten by Jews, you'll probably do better skipping the sad tales of betrayal and torture and buying a modern Sephardic cookbook.
One of the ways I became pretty certain that my family were of Spanish-Jewish origin was an outline of their eating habits. I had heard that if one ate or prepared various foods, or omitted others, it could be used as evidence against him or her at an Inquisition trial. A Drizzle of Honey could have served as a map of my grandmother's kitchen, and I had some intensely personal reading experiences.My grandmother, for example, prepared the fairly unpopular vegetable, Swiss Chard, at least once, if not two times, a week and I linked it to the fact that Swiss Chard was one of those foods that could incriminate one as a crypto Jew. From among the Swiss Chard recipes in the book, I found to my delight that one is a version of a dish my grandmother regularly cooked.The strongest points of this work are the usability of the recipes and the commentary--a history, in fact--accompanying them. The recipes are clear and "followable," unlike some found in similar cookbooks, that is, cookbooks that claim to resuscitate an ancient cusine in the present-day idiom but cause you to find yourself searching for arcane ingredients through mail-order houses that no longer exist. All recipes are "doable."But it is more than a cookbook--it is a history book, bringing readers into close, personal contact with actual historical figures through their Inquisition testimony, or the testimony of their accusers. It was particularly chilling for me to read, knowing that my forbears could easily have been among the "criminals." These recipes honor their original authors by assuming their names, a personal touch that links readers to a tasteful tradition composed of distinctive individuals whose stories finally get told through what they cooked.Addendum: Since I wrote this review, I have had my DNA tested, and learned that I was correct in my assumptions about my family's crypto-Jewish origins. I have more Jewish DNA than any other ethnicity. Learning this has made this book even more special to me than it had been before.
This is a well researched book with many interesting recipes and historical comments by reputable scholars. I was looking forward to a celebration of the rich interchange between the Jewish, Catholic and Moorish communities of Spain experienced for centuries on end. Jewish consciousness permeates much of Spanish culture from Alfonso El Sabio, to Teresa of Avila etc. That is what I was looking for: something which would be a means of understanding and bridge-building.I am sad to say that beginning with the first sentence on the dust cover there is a fixation on the victimhood of Jews in Spain. Rather than celebrating a wonderful interweaving of cultures the book chose to reinforce age-old prejudices. It is one more example of a centuries old tradition that tars the Christian Spaniards with the brush of persecution and perpetuates the myth of "Black Spain".
