Of course, I abhor pundits and politicians who use this tactic, because it, ultimately, crowds out other ideas and tends to weaken democracy.So, my hope was to glean an understanding of Christie, Donald Trump, and the dynamics of Trump’s inner circle. Did I succeed?Yes, to a greater extent than I probably should have. Indeed, I have grown disappointed at just how similar Trump’s team is to that displayed on the old TV soap opera, Dallas. But that gets ahead of this review...BLUSH FACTOR: Although the number of eff-words is not large, they are present, so consider your own circumstances before purchasing this. For me, it did not detract. Nor do I think anybody should refuse to buy this book for the cussing.WRITING & EDITING: Co-writer Ellis Henican has done a terrific job of polishing up what must have been a dynamic tirade.Possibly, the most telling passage comes in the discussion of Gov. Christie’s appointment to chair the transition. A total waste of time. Its basically Christie saying "look at me, look at how great I am." Its a self serving, self congratulatory, pat on his own back full of nonsense.It makes you realize how much like Trump he really is. A bully, a braggart, someone who thought only he could fix it when it came to NJ. After reading this all I can think is this is his lead up to another run.
To me it’s a great compliment when someone tells me that I write like I talk… and I talk like I write. That is definitely the compliment I am giving Chris Christie. His straight from the heart storytelling of his life… is just like listening to him talk on a TV program. He shares with the reader his toughness… as well as his inner soul. From the love of his parents and family… to the hard times he had in his early marriage… pride intertwined with disappointment in how his high school baseball career wound up… to being a U.S. Attorney… hell bent on cleaning up the government in New Jersey… where in a seven year period his office would charge nearly ten percent of their state legislature.His story will grab you right from the get-go… starting off with a mano-a-mano confrontation with Trump “campaign CEOâ€â€¦ Steve Bannon. (Actually it couldn’t have been mano-a-mano… because each “mano†needs a spine and integrity… and only one of them… Christie… fit those requirements.) When Bannon was firing Christie from the campaign despite Christie’s heavy involvement and direction… including but not limited to… being the first major political figure to endorse candidate Trump. From there the author goes back to his childhood… his upbringing his education… his early jobs… and his almost lifetime love of politics which was originally nurtured by his Grandmother… his rise through the many branches of government… including his two terms as New Jersey Governor… and his run for President.All the names that are constantly on the news every day of our lives now… from the big to the small… and the ones we wished would disappear… from Clinton to Rubio to Conway to Manafort… to Bush(s)… to Sessions to Obama(s)… all the cabinet members… and opponents. Christie's’ wild ride includes an almost choice as Vice Presidential candidate… and consideration for Attorney General…If that isn’t enough… there is Springsteen and “SHAQâ€... and a Hurricane created by Mother Nature… named Sandy… and the human hurricane named Christie… described as only Chris Christie is capable of doing! I don’t care what side of the aisle you sit on… this is a book that almost turns its own pages… once you open it up.
I have always been on the fence about Christie and in this book he won me over a bit more. I admire the work he did as US attorney and I do think he is smart. I think he is being conned by Trump and still doesn’t see him for what he is. One thing I do agree with, he spent a lot of time and effort on the transition, and all of it went into the trash. This was due to Kushner and the axe he has to grind with his father’s arrest and conviction. I also agree that Trump filled his cabinet with grifters, and crooks, look, most are now indicted, or have plead guilty. Christie does take a lot of time in the book patting himself on the back, which I am sure many of us would do. Come on, he had the lowest rating of any governor ever when he left, he couldn’t have done that without screwing up.
A straight talker, articulate, interesting even when infuriating to many. But this book is a total bore. Nothing new. A puff piece, written in a non-controversial way, so that, if he runs for office, or faces senate hearings, he hasn't insulted anybody. Sadly, Governor, you apparently ARE finished.
I’ve been a fan of Gov Christie for a long time. I loved it when he got in Rubios face during the debate and Rubio melted on stage. This book provides a real account inside the 2016 election. If you’re a Republican you’ll enjoy it. Dems will obviously give it a one star.

This excellent book will motivate you to get out and travel for as long as you possibly can. It is one of the best books I have read in the last decade, and trust me, I read a lot.While I loved the entire book, my favorite section was the last one on how and why all of us are already being world citizens. I found the arguments extremely compelling. I loved the following: “There is no real conflict between nationalism and globalism. On the contrary: It is to the extent that a nation becomes more global in its achievements that it becomes admirable.†What a simple yet profound idea, that I had never thought about! I wish all nationalists would read it. By the way, the author has nothing against nationalism.The book is mostly philosophical in nature, yet it is not Kant or Heidegger. It is practical philosophy in the style of the Stoics which seem to have had an influence on the writer (who by the way is from Cyprus, the birthplace of Zeno who founded Stoicism). There are chapters such as how to balance freedom and discipline while you travel, how to deal with beggars and other unpleasant realities in many countries, what mindset to have, how to go about thinking of your journey and creating a wise line of exploration, what are the most important transformative experiences a long-term traveler is most likely to have, and much-much more.The book is actually composed of three elements: the main text, travel stories (mostly with a philosophical flavor), and very beautiful photos from his journey. All these elements have been blended masterfully, and I have to say this is a very well designed book and on excellent paper, well-bound, that is a pleasure to hold in your hand – not many books so meticulously designed nowadays (congratulations on this Nicos!). From the travel stories my favorites were "Legs and Arms" (worth buying the book for just this very profound essay!), "The Merchant and the Musician", "Huichilopochtli" (about his imagining the Maya universe while in a museum in Mexico City), "Higher Perfection" (about how he experienced perfection in imperfection at a French restaurant), and, of course, "Universal Brotherhood." Wonderful little vignettes that one may return to many times.The photos are really great and are often related to the text, so you can jump from the stories to the text and then the photos. The two addenda in the end are also great, since they give practical advice to the aspiring long-term traveler.On the style of writing: Nicos writes in two styles. In the main text he uses a more philosophical and impersonal language that befits its subject matter. I found his writing to be very clear, very deep and pleasant. It takes some time to get used to it, especially if you only read novels and bestsellers, but once you do it flows beautifully. The stories have a more personal character, although he does not manage to get rid of his philosophical style completely in these either. Nicos delves deep even in the most simple of situations and squeezes out of every experience the teaching it has to offer – the "Higher Perfection" story is an excellent example of such a squeezing.On a final note, I have to admit that after reading the book I have subscribed to his "Tuesday Letters" blog and that I enjoy all of his philosophical writings that deal with our everyday life as well as with the big existential questions.

However, Nicos has a way with words that captures the imagination that gave me a hunger and set me on a world quest to experience life in my own current surroundings as well as the desire to see myself within the world. I found I couldn’t put this book down. I wanted to not only read, but also absorb and meditate upon each word. I loved the little stories of Nicos’ own travel experiences that were more than just simple adventures, but discoveries within themselves. Even each chapter’s footnotes are not to be missed, giving more detail on quotes, further discussions and more. The pictures not only capture nature’s beauty, but seeing real life in other parts of our globe – whether day-to-day activities, funerals, religious ceremonies or university students taking a break. Having her share her honest feelings to him about everything around her was a valued treasure to him. He had written to her for a moment’s entertainment, but her sincerity was changing him; she was becoming special to him. And when James wrote to her that “If I could, I would fashion a world dedicated to your happiness,†she began to fall in love with him.Then suddenly a letter comes that changes everything. Kimberley is being forced to marry the disgusting, self-centered Lord Louvell. If James doesn’t get to her by the next day and marry her himself, he will lose her forever. All his fears about his disfigurement smother him, but he hurries to Leeds. Will he figure out how to win her when Lord Louvell has already established his claim? Would her family accept the disfigured stranger over the marriage they had arranged for her? Or can they find love, peace, and contentment with each other?I loved this book! Learning about someone without the visual distraction can create a surprisingly deep and lasting bond. They wrote to each other, knew how each other felt about things, what was important to the other, what caused them pain – and they learned to care deeply. This was a beautiful story, great pacing, and wonderful characters that were real and likable. This is one of those stories that will touch your heart. Don’t miss reading it for yourself to see what they must overcome and whether it will be strong enough to last.
Loved, loved, loved this book! Most of the characters from Deborah Wilson's previous "Valiant Love" series are in this story. It was like being able to catch up with old friends. (I just love this series) It held a range of emotions from sadness, humor, disgust, anger and love. The feelings are realistic and relatable. It was easy to identify with the character's emotions. The sadness can be summed up by this quote from the book: "After everything he'd done for her, he deserved happiness. Admiration. He would have it. She would crush him with it." I think that speaks for itself. At the beginning, I had to laugh at the hysterical audacity of Miss Kimberley Clemens. But there is also kindness, devotion and loyalty in this book. Together they embark on a quest to be there for each other, to support each other, to grant each other a chance for reprieve from the demands of society and to heal each other. Kim gets James to acknowledge he needs to reach out to a group of men that were caught up in the horror he experienced two years prior. When in London, while Kim is being introduced to society, he is meeting with the four men with a shared experience. The men come to a conclusion that their ordeal is not over. This book will take you on a rollercoaster ride were the highs are high and the lows are low. There are twists and turns in the storyline that make it unpredictable to really know the ending. My deduction of how things would end were way off base. I did not see the ending coming. An excellent read that I highly recommend.
While the plot was somewhat engaging, for a riff on Beauty and the Beast, that's be here the positive stops. The writing is sophomoric, with far too many abrupt sentences, and very awkward prose. There were many incorrect usages of words, and an endless supply of sentences ending with prepositions. Add to that a lot of formatting errors and triple spacing between very short paragraphs and you get a book that's a bear to read. The triple spacing is just a way to bump up the page count, and disingenuous at best. I have read a couple of this author's other books and don't remember being this disappointed.

It is a compelling read, Though it is a heart breaking story, and I had tears in my eye, I did not want to put the book down. His eye for detail is impressive, he creates such vivid pictures, full of imagery and poetic language, Even though he often says that he was angry his tone is mostly gentle and forgiving. I had the opportunity to listen to his interview on BBC, and I was under the impression that he is rather timid, but there was no hint of bitterness which was to be expected of a person who had to endure so much. I have read a number of biographical books written by children who had to endure a hard life, but this one was far more engaging. M.G.Oliveira
I would recommend this book to anyone!!! Whether you are interested in the topic of child soldiers or not, this is a book that will make you want to read more about the topic. What Emmanuel Jal has been through is something that most people will never understand, but i believe that this book comes very close.
If you like the book ,"A Long Way Gone", this is similar in that in being a well-written memoir. If you have a heart for Africa..interested in learning more about child soldiers/children in warfare, then this would be a great read!
I have been wanting to read this book for years and finally purchased a little more than a month ago and was very excited to begin. The first 50 pages or so were difficult but manageable as the horrors that Emmanuel saw were unbelievable, yet something that should be shared. I finally put the book down for good yesterday at page 104 after walking away from it for several weeks distancing myself from the horrors of war that he and other children were forced to endure.Emmanuel did an excellent job of recapturing the horror, fear, and impossibility of his situation. My heart exploded when he watched in horror what was done to his family and knowing that he was not only too young to witness these horrible acts, but also because he was too young to even understand some of the events that were occurring. His descriptions were vivid and life-like...I still remember vividly the horror I felt when he described the events between he and his friend during training.My intent of this review is not to bash the book as it was very well written and drew you in. However, I do wish there were more reviews avaialable before I purchased the book that let me know how emotionally draining and heart-wrenching it was to read. I have never not finished a book that I thought was well-written with a great story line...However, the horrors of this situation truly made reading anymore unbearable.

I cound't put down Emmanuel's story. He digs deep not only into the detail of his life, but into his emotions throughout. Very good read.
This book moved me. It is well written and easy to read as it flows well. It is hard to read because of the emotion it provokes. Leaves the reader with much to contemplate about our very small world and how blind we can be to things outside our protected circles.

Albee's writing is relaxed, conversational, and often humorous. She looks at famous poisoners, famous victims, and how people have poisoned themselves through makeup, medical treatments, and what they've eaten. A great box for anyone wanting a quick read on this fascinating subject.

Great book for middle school and great history of poison!
This book is deliciously dark fun! Sarah Albee’s POISON is the perfect mix of science, history, mystery, and entertainment, and readers of many different genres will be thoroughly engaged by this book. I know I was! From ancient times to today (and beyond!), Albee shows us how poisons–both natural and man-made–have affected humans lives and culture. The facts are shocking and fascinating, but broken down in a way that makes them accessible. There’s also a ton of humor to balance the heavy subject matter, with puns and sarcasm galore, especially in the titles and captions. And all of it is tied together with a compelling design featuring sidebars, pullouts, photos, and illustrations. There are also some serious nonfiction features, including a table of contents, author’s note, acknowledgements, notes, selected bibliography, research guide, index, and more. A highly recommended middle-grade nonfiction title!
This book is so wonderfully morbid that readers might not notice it's also jam-packed with history, science and human interest. Wide-eyed kids--both boys and girls--will devour the stories and learn a ton at the same time. So will adults. This book will find a home on school library shelves and kids' bedside tables. (Don't let them stay up too late reading!) And it's the perfect present to take to a birthday party.
What a page-turner! I couldn't put POISON down. I imagine that young readers will have the same experience--even if they grab this title just hoping to look up a quick fact about a historical poisoning, they'll find themselves sucked in quickly by the numerous compelling true stories and fascinating scientific facts about how poisons work.This would be a wonderful book to read aloud as a family, too. I read parts aloud to my husband, and we both marveled at how much we learned from each "tox box" and "medical moment.
In true Sarah Albee style, she takes an interesting topic and makes it fascinating for the reader! As an adult, I couldn't put this down. I learned so much. It's not just about intentional poisons to kill, but even poisons like nicotine and lead. The listed resources will delight those who want to know more.I highly recommend this and would especially consider gifting it to a chemistry teacher!

Tessa Boase has done her work very well.
I have read several of the other "servant" type of books and this one doesn't come close in comparison. I thought it would be about one woman being a housekeeper in England and it was about lots of housekeepers and the problems the employers had with them. I've read the books about the cooks and the maids and they were informitive and funny this was boring. I wouldn't buy it again.
Cudos to the author who did much research tracing these women. These are stories about seldom thought of workers whose main job was to be invisible. May I also recommend Rose and Diamonds for Dinner. These are buried treasures revealing a world I never thought existed
This is not particularly well written, but I am interested in the history of this time. So it was worth it to me to wade through the tedious writing style.
Provides excellent information and insight to the workings of the English country houses and the women who were tasked with keeping them up to par. Many times a book of this nature will be full of dry facts, but this one provides a glimpse of how life was for servants in the big estates. Two thumbs up.
I thought this was a really great read for anyone interested in the Downton Abbey era. The book highlights a number of interesting women who led lives that very few could imagine today. The author did excellent research and pulled together the stories of women history long forgot.

Wonderful empathic writer who lives with us as we explore these unsung heroines of past centurys. Tessa Boase has the skill and encouragement to bring thse women to life again...I so enjoyed and empathized as the stories were told. Great researcher and historian who manages to enthrall the reader. More pleae Tessa!
