Personally I think this book should be on every desk of every Visual Basic programmer. I think that it is laid out well and the examples in the book are easy to follow. This is not a book that you read before bed or that will keep you up at night with the plot twists but it does what it says. Essentially this is a refrence book on the applications programmers interface which is the backbone of the Windows OS. This is an updated version of the book meant for VB6 users but it could be used by older versions of the lanquage. Essentially it is *the* book to have if you are serious about VB6 programming.
I would not think of doing without Dan's API guide.I started Windows in 1991 with C and SDK. In those days you had to learn the API to get your work done. But, after VB 3.0, I got completely away from C and intimate knowledge of the API. Dan's book de-mystifies the Win32 API.New and intermediate VB programmers will find his explanations easy to follow. Dan tells you why things work the way they do and warns about any pitfalls using VB for API calls. (There are not many problems, but they do exist.)I you have not got this book and you are serious about VB, I recommend you get it.
(((Warning))) There are Bonus Chapter and Utilities Tools in CD-Rom, which not in the book.Beware , Buying the this book without CD-Rom.
The description of the book was accruate. A nice big book with plenty of examples to put to use immediately.
This book is great! Covers a lot on the windows 32bit API, nice.
I bought a used copy. It came complete with the cd-rom and was in good shape. The book contains al the ins and outs you may need. Just perfect!
The book is new.(NEW) I like it, because the book is new as describe But the packing is not good, because the CD is cracked.(can not use) Anything else is good.
Disclaimer: our public library only had the edition for VB4 (1996, I think), and the CD was mostly unreadable so I couldn't get to many of the examples.I've programmed in more than half a dozen languages on at least as many machines and I didn't think this book was as great as everyone here is making it sound. Maybe the newer edition is a lot better. I thought the author couldn't decide whether he wanted to give an exposition on how Windows works or on what his example programs were all about, or provide a thorough reference on API function calls. The compromise approach -- a little of both -- didn't seem very satisfactory. The pages of code were both mind-numbing and needless. The chapter on memory explained how to get memory, but had nothing on what to do with it once you got it! The function reference sections, which could have been the basis for a really excellent book, were too short and cryptic. I found his writing style confusing in spots and there were numerous digressions before he actually got to the topic of the section heading. Maybe this is the best book on this subject out there (as some seem to think), but it only rated about a 6 out of 10 on an absolute scale for programming books and seemed to need a serious re-writing to excise the needless repetition (and re-repetition). There were several topics I wanted info on which were nowhere to be found. A 1200 page book should be better IMO. Perhaps beginning API programmers will get a lot out of it. 3 1/2 stars.

I like the size and weight and also the 2018 copyright. But... and it’s a big but in my book, being a librarian , it doesn’t have an index, WHAT!
This is a great learning official travel guide to the Aruba. A great informative book. Learning content provided. Appreciating stuff. Loving content. Recommended.
My mother booked a place in Aruba for her 50th birthday in a year and a half and she is so excited! I bought her this book because she wanted to know more about what there was to do while we visit. She can’t wait!
This book was so disappointing. It really was just too basic. I was looking for some more details and advice for our trip.
Great and up to date info. Read prior to our trip. Small enough to take with us.
This book keeps repeating itself. Poor grammar. Not enough helpful information. Not worth the money spent on it. Don't buy.

This is a great treasury. The stories are about 50 pages long so it's great to read one each night for small toddlers. The pictures are great too.
Love this book! My baby seems to love the pictures too. I was pleasantly surprised it was a treasury and have several Lyle stories (I didn't read the full book description when I ordered it). I am so glad we got this book for my baby.
My maiden name is Crocker. We had almost all the Lyle Crocodile books, because we were the "Crocker-dyles." My dad used to read this to his 3 "kiddos" all the time. He loved this book so much that when he bought a small 2 man sail boat, he named it LYLE. He even had a 6 inch Lyle painted on the back of the boat. It was really cute. Anyway, my dad just passed away and is now with Jesus. When I saw this book on Amazon, I just had to have it! I was thrilled to see that it was not just one of the stories Dad had read to us, but many! It now sits on my coffee table and is great conversation piece and a wonderful reminder of my awesome dad. I have a new granddaughter, and I will be reading this to her as soon as she is old enough. Enjoy the book!
Lyle is a classic......my babies loved it............now my grand babies are equally captivated by Lyle, Lyle! This is a Christmas gift for my 19 month old grandaughter who first met Lyle in a book at Grammy's house that dated back to her daddy's childhood. It was an immediate hit with her. This is a great collection of Lyle stories and my son and his wife are very pleased with this addition to their daughter's bookshelf.
Wonderful book!!!I would recommend it highly. It also puts in good values into the book without being too preachy.I read this book to my 4 year old and my two year old and they LOVE IT!!!
I have a 1st grade reader who I volunteer to help with reading. He loves crocodiles real and fictional. He loves the story of this extraordinary crocodile. The book is a great way to teach about love, forgiving, family and so much more. The fact that it was written over 50 years ago also is an opportunity to show a child what life was like without computers and social media.
The story is cute and the illustrations really catch my son's eye.
I got this book for a precocious just turned 3 year old, and while she enjoys it, it's not her favorite. We mainly read the dog walking story because she loves dogs. It's a good price for a 192 page hardcover book.

This book crams more information than a year of high school chemistry -- I hope that doesn't sound dull.Roston does brings a chemistry perspective on things from the big bang to evolution to the auto. When it comes to implications for our future due to greenhouse gases, it can be daunting and despairing; but that's the price for being informed.thanks Eric.
Understanding the carbon cycle and carbon's basic chemistry are vital to understanding global climate change and energy issues. I love learning about these issues. Thus, I was excited for this book. The title and back cover made it sound like it was going to be an engaging read. I was sorely disapointed. The writing and editing were just awful--shockingly awful. Adjacent paragraphs that don't belong together topically. Long random tangents throughout the book that the author fails to relate directly back to his thesis. (For example, in chapter 11 about biological fuels, a lot of information is discussed about basic genetics and the human genome project. Exactly why was never revealed and the chapter never presented in-depth info about biofuels.) The lack of a strong conclusion or forward-looking set of recommendations made the book end on a very unsatisfying note. These among other problems made for a less than spectacular read. I found myself skipping through big sections because I was so frustrated with the poor writing, both structurally and topically. One will obtain a better basic sense of the global carbon cycle from the Wikipedia entry than from this book. I don't recommend it in the least.
This is a unique book, sweeping in breadth. On the surface, it is a typical science book, but the author manages to add grandeur by giving it a historical perspective.Historical in a couple of senses: First, charting the history of the earth, and second, delving into mankind's history and man's relation to Carbon. The author's research was phenomenal, and on every page there is some provocative or interesting fact that is new (to me at least, and Im rather well read).I do have a suggestion, and if the author ever publishes a 2nd edition, I seriously recommend it: The book could use one or two historical graphs showing trends over time. A picture is worth a thousand words, and if there is one message, one thought, that this book pronounces it is that there have been long-term, gradual changes in the earth's environment, and we need to understand those to survive and flourish. But words are not enough to convey that thought: I want a graph that shows some of the trends, not just the recent Kneeley curve of CO2 in the atmosphere, but the amount of O2 in the atmosphere. There was no O2 originally, then plants came along and pumped out O2, and animals were able to evolve, then they started exhaling CO2, etc. What is the long-term dynamics of plants/animals/O2/CO2?In summary, this is an interesting, educational book. It does focus on global-warming near the end, but that is not the primary aim of the book, and one shouldn't dismiss it as "just another global warming book". I highly recommend this to anyone interested in science or the environment.
The writer has translated for "the rest of us" what scientists have been telling us in their opaque way: How the burning of carbon in the form of fossil fuels is distorting and accelerating what had been the normal progression of climate change throughout the earth's history. I challenge climate change deniers to read this book and hold to their position. For people concerned about climate change but not quite sure how and why it's happening -- why, precisely, carbon is at the heart of the problem -- this is the book for you. I heartily recommend it.
This book is a natural & "unnatural" history of carbon and humans. If you wonder about scientific debate this book is a good place to start.Chapter 1 describes carbon's origin and role before RNA/DNA appear.Chapter 2 concerns the origin of "life",while admitting that there is no good definition. The book is weak on scientific [evecological] philosophy. Yes,we can name peculiarities of RNA/DNA states of being, but likewise waves, clouds, crystals, etc. have their equally unique properties, even having features akin to reproduction; and everything in the universe is certainly sensitive and evolves in concert with everything else [evolutionary ecology or evecology].Chapter 3,I believe, does a nice job on the "darker" ages of microbial life on Earth, emphasizing carbon, and oxygen's rise in the shallows.Chapter 4's title["Inherent Brutality"]is a little much, subscribing rather fanatically to the more sensationalistic than scientific view of the "arms race" school. In ecological studies of relatively healthy nature "competition" is a jargon word to most since natural shortages do not seem to exist[e.g. deserts are not lacking in water, they're naturally dry;similarly forest floors are dark, but not "short" on light; and Galapagos finches don't want to breed if there is less feed]. Also, humans seem to be the only predators, ever[Yes,including that big vulture T.rex]. Everybody else eats ripe,about-to-die,or dead animals or plants. However, even fallen humans don't eat green oranges-Think about it.Chapter 5 is a fascinating essay on the 1/4 billion years of nearly unchanging Ginkgo trees; though,of course there are other "living fossils",just as old ,such as tadpole shrimp.Chapter 6 is mainly supportive of a very plausible theory: That humans have evolved ecologically as a "runner" version of ape. Since I have myself have run a distance equivalent to circling the Earth, mostly accompanied by a dog or two, this chapter is personally interesting. I will add here my own view that running,at least in the desert or mountains where I run,is,in my opinion, quite meditative/thoughtful.Chapters 6-12 are the "unnatural" chapters as the author calls them,in comparison with the "natural" chapters 1-6. Here we soon come upon Richard Dawkins' memes, and what I would call the mother of all memes: "Let's run amuck for the hell of it,because we can [at least for awhile!]; let's be "extra-special",not just special like everything else in the universe." This,of course,is my version, but Hey! Just where does Dawkins get his philosophy,so well summed up on page 119,that memes[roughly "traditions"] can "in one way or another...[to quote Roston]--temper or conquer the more base, stupid, and brutal elements of our nature." If memes are founded on thoughtless/careless/grasping genes then, pray tell, how could there be any nice memes? In any case,I,for one, am not proud of the last 50-100,000 years of human thoughtlessness, but I don't believe that humans-or the universe-are naturally/healthily insensitive, careless,or indifferent.Basically the "unnatural" last six chapters are about how high-tech humans are becoming;and all kinds of high-tech ways that humans can keep on being "extra-special"-and-somehow pull out of the titanic nosedive falling-humans are steering/dis-leading the Earth into.I have to say, however, whatever its shortcomings, that this book is a wondrous window into sometimes very technical scientific journals from nearly the whole spectrum of science.Too bad the book concludes so sadly. I myself am more hopeful that philosophy,in all its rainbow of colors,scientific,religious/spiritual, etc.,can, through or with repentance, give us hope that we and our little children, and all the Universal Parent's children, will have a healthier future than the one falling-humans have been working on. The really real future is the truth of love.

My son was struggling with 2 other phonics programs but has really excelled now due to the amazing simplicity of this book. I love it! I included a few pics of the pages because I think it helps to see a little before you buy.
My son was having difficulties reading and I went through "100 Lessons to Teach Your Child How to Read" which worked to some extent. He didn't start excelling until I bought this book. I have noticed a huge difference. I really like the added games and the ease of using this book. The other book we use to use had so many instructions to read. This book just flows a lot nicer.
My son and I have been using this book for the current academic school year and we both really like it. His reading has soared over the year and it's been amazing to watch. I like that this book is self-paced. Meaning we can choose to do as much or as little as we want in one sitting. It's divided by topics, not by chapters or lessons. My son loves the funny little sayings and quotes. I also find the font to be very pleasing to the eyes.
I used the book 100 Easy Lessons to initially teach my son to read and he loved it and was very successful with it. It kept him interested, because it presented fun little stories with the learning concepts. The thing I don't love about that book is it doesn't teach long vowels, digraphs and blends, although it does give you ideas at the end of the book for teaching those things yourself. I did some research to see what I could use to teach him those things and read a review someone left on-line, about ordering this book as a follow up and starting around page 50, which is what we did. My son is learning a lot and it is helpful in teaching him long vowels and the other things 100 easy lessons doesnt teach, but oh so boring. It's boring for me and its super boring for him. We could handle it at fist but my son is slowly starting to dread it. The book is just page after page of reciting words (that mostly don't make sense together) and then having a little "spelling test" at the end of each page. I do feel like he has become a better reader because of this book I just wish it wasn't so monotonous. If you have a hesitant reader, I would either take it really slow in this book or find something a little more captivating.
This has been the best investment I have ever made in my life. I started this program with my oldest son 3 years ago when he was 3. He is now 6 and has just completed Kindergarten. We homeschool and have used this as his main reading program. He is an excellent reader. I receive comments about how amazing of a reader he is at least weekly. Again he just turned 6 and he is reading at a solid 4th grade level. We haven't completely finished the book even, we have about 30 pages left. He can decode new words with relative ease, including multi-syllable words. We have worked through the book consistently but without rushing. When he had difficulty with a page we would do a smaller portion. Occasionally we have needed to review some previous concepts, we just go back to the relevant page(s) and refresh. He now loves reading and can read almost anything that catches his eye. When he was young we would do fairly small segments and any time we could act out a word, we would. Words like, log, lad, nap, mop, hop, etc. He hasn't loved every day we've done it, but on the days it's particularly grueling, we just needed to incorporate some extra fun or motivation. I did things like, motivating treats (raisins or small candies), acting out the words, say a line then race across the room and back, etc. I also let him read while standing which helped him focus and enjoy it more.My only, and very minor at that, complaint is with Dewey, the bookworm. He is incredibly cute, and has some excellent sayings... but they aren't attuned to the reading level of the child, or to the comprehension level of the child. It would be more effective if the kids had a chance at reading his sayings before they were about halfway through the book. It would also be less frustrating if I didn't have to take a half hour to explain some of them because of how they are worded or how abstract they are.All in all, a phenomenal phonics program.
I absolutely adore this book! My daughter learned to read in public kinder but wasn't confident and struggled with sounding out. Now she is understanding different sounds of each letter and when to use the different sounds and combinations of letters. I'm even understanding phonics better! I get so excited to see her use this book and learn. I'm so happy to see her confidence growing as well as her love for reading and writing!
My son did one year in public school and was one of those kids who was doing just well enough to not get any extra attention, but was not being pushed to his full potential. We started homeschooling this year and after a lot of research, I decided to go with this program (and also Reading Pathways, which I also highly recommend). We've only been doing the program for 2 1/2 weeks and he has already progressed more in this short time than he did the entire year last year. He LOVES the games that are included and is now picking up books independently. I am extremely grateful to Ms. Hiskes for creating this product!
This book has been a tremendous addition and supplement for my Kindergartener. We finished "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and really needed something to fill in the gaps. This is the book!I especially love the word lists provided. It has given me a solid focus on words and tips essential to my daughter's reading, writing and spelling success.

The novel Outcast was written by Rosemary Sutcliff. It is the story of a Roman infant who was adopted by a Celtic family after his family died in a ship wreck. He’s never fully accepted by the tribe and, as a young man, is driven out of the village as bad luck. He winds up kidnapped and sold into slavery. He is finally made a galley slave living under wretched conditions. He is whipped virtually to death, thrown overboard for dead, washes up on the British coast and is taken in by a Roman engineer. The novel is very well written. For the most part, the novel is well researched. The first half or more is basically an action story and the last one third is sort of a coming of age story of the boy-now-man dealing with life as it is rather than as it should be.Rosemary Sutcliff is an excellent writer. I am always taken by her phraseology, and her detailed and colorful descriptions of the world around her characters. One small historical inaccuracy—Romans generally didn’t use chained slaves to row their military galleys in this time period (probably sometime in late antiquity between 50-400 CE). Chained slaves weren’t used to any great extent in the west until late in the Middle Ages. Romans used a special class of sailor or marine who, if needed, could drop his oar, pick up a spear or pike and fight the enemy. The novel is probably most appropriate to young adults, although seniors will also enjoy it. The description of treatment of galley slaves can be brutal—but probably not too graphic for a young adult. The first half or more of the story moved right along. There was no bloody violence. I was disappointed by the last one quarter of the book. In my opinion the author could easily have shortened the text in which the hero has a catharsis. But I’m a guy and prefer action over emotion.I give the novel a rating of three for two reasons. First, Romans didn’t use galley slaves in the way they are portrayed in this novel. Most readers will be more familiar with Ben Hur and will overlook that small inaccuracy. My major problem was with the slowness of the last part of the novel. I had a hard time getting through that portion of the novel.
ROSEMARY SUTCLIFFE, a British author who died only in 1992, created many memorable books, ostensibly in the "young adult" category. However, her prose is so sophisticated, that it defies the "young adult" category, and has always been, to the librarians of my acquaintance, anyway, the "young adults" author with the most complex sentence-structure, and the most "adult, grown-up" story-lines. (Here on Amazon, this book, 'THE OUTCAST' is listed as for people aged "10 and up"!)"THE OUTCAST" is the mesmerizing, totally involving story of Beric, who, as an infant, was the only survivor of a Roman shipwreck. He is adopted into a primitive British tribe, despite the warnings of some of the members of that tribe that adopting an "outsider" will do the tribe no good. Beric, happy and secure in his place in the tribe, reachers his teen-age years -- but bad things begin to befall the tribe, and Beric -- whose origins have never been forgotten -- is blamed for these occurences. His friends turn against him, and he is....cast out.Astonished, hurt, and alone, Beric starts out. He winds up -- as might be expected of a penniless wanderer in Roman times -- as a house-slave. Things get worse, however, and he is soon made a galley-slave. The conditions of degradation of galley slaves were never more completely and horrifically described -- except, perhaps, in the original "Ben-Hur", with which tge sadly lesser-known Ms. Sutcliff's descriptions, are on a total par. Missing from "Ben Hur", however, is any semblance of the description of Beric's oar-mate in "THE OUTCAST". It is a sensitive description of a sensiitive, and doomed young artist, and the story of how this young artist was sent to the galleys is a story-within-a-story, which could have been the basis for another novel, all by itself. Beric's story -- and that of his oar-mate -- are tales that never leave one's consciousness, (or at least, they have not left mine), once one reads them.An epic drama, so very, very well told. I loved this story as a young girl, and still love it today. It is to Ms. Sutcliff's credit that, as a young girl, I naturally preferred my historical novels to have a heroINE as the main character. But "THE OUTCAST" is irresistable in its telling and in its story. It is the ONLY book that, as a budding-feminist-without-knowing-it, I still immensely enjoyed -- even though the main protagonist was a teen-age boy, and not a teen-age girl! The ONLY reason this book may be categorized as a "young adult" novel is that the protagonist IS a teen-ager. But it is an involving, satisfying read for ALL ages, and both genders -- from precocious pre-teen, to those of the age of centenarian plus! This is a book with strong and sometimes painful scenes -- but it is still one of the most satisfying books I have ever read.A classic of the highest order, for all time, and one that should be far better known. As with most of the historical novels I have read, I imagine that "THE OUTCAST" would make one heck of an outstanding motion picture!
This was one of my all time favorite books when I was around twelve years old, and now rereading it as an adult I still love it. It tells the story of Beric, Roman by birth, but orphaned as a baby and adopted into a British tribe. He fights valiantly for acceptance but through no fault of his own becomes an outcast. Then his own people, the Romans, enslave him. Even when he is sent to the galleys, he retains his courage and human decency. Rosemary Sutcliff writes beautifully, and her compassion and understanding for her young hero makes this a deeply moving book. It's not a childish story. There is real suffering and real loss here. It is impossible not to empathize with Beric. We root for him to survive and triumph against all odds. The story is well plotted and absorbing. In my opinion OUTCAST is the best of the many outstanding novels by this very fine writer of historical fiction. It is simply great.
This richly-written story is one of her best. It is set in the Roman empire and features a foundling raised by a British tribe, the Dumnonii (modern Devon), but cast out as a scapegoat when a series of bad harvests, etc, occurs. He has several adventures, some of them good, many of them bad.
Saved from drowning as an infant, Beric, a Roman, is raised by Celts. Eventually the tribe decides to force him out. He ends up a slave in Rome. He escapes only to be sent to the galleys. Eventually finding his way back to Britain, he must find his own place among his people… whoever they might really be.Much of Outcast was good. It dragged on occasion, however. I recommend it for those interested in the time period.
