I am still in the process of going through this Course, but I truly believe this is exactly what I need at this point in my life. ACIM teaches the reader a different way of thinking. I am well educated by modern western standards - I have a masters degree in electrical engineering, and a masters degree in business (MBA)...I am middle-aged so I have had plenty of time to witness life on earth...I was also in the US Navy at an early age...I hope this gives you a context for my review........I have to honestly say, without any reservation, from the bottom of my heart - that this is the single MOST IMPORTANT book - rather EDUCATION - of my entire life...Nothing else comes close....If you are seeking true happiness, inner peace, would like to really internalize "why you are here", this is the best work around....If you want to learn how to deal with your resentment, prejudices, and maybe most-importantly, ego - this book will do it for you. And if you don't think you have any of these issues - perhaps you need this book even more!...This book goes beyond formal religion (which I do not partake in), beyond meditation (which I've practiced for ~30 years), and beyond the Bible (which I've read but didn't really "internalize")....I am about half way through the lessons (this is the part you should focus on - the other parts are optional), and I look forward every morning to reading a new lesson - or internalizing the previous lesson...I like this book so much I am going to give out about 7 copies for the holiday's to family and friends......And for any of you with significant health challenges (like me) - what you learn from this book will help you.....Start with lesson one, practice each lesson, have patients, and before you know it - you will see the light....As far as some of the reviews on here that were not so kind, I will not pass judgment of these folks - but wish them well in there journey to "seeing the light".

Check out the first five sentences..."This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time."Required?The only choice is when I take it at any-given-time?And yet, there is enormous wisdom in it.It takes browsing a few pages to realize that actually, it is required, because it is the only spiritual message there is.It is the same message we hear from anyone that has ever grown into spiritual high levels and tried to tell us how to join them. It is the way.Yes, there is a heavy "Christian" tone to the book. BUT, to my surprise, and unlike the stories I heard in both, catholic-elementary AND catholic-high-school (such was my luck) --- this book interprets things correctly.For example... take a contentious phrase, something like: "revenge is mine".Can you imagine how someone can 'interpret' that to a captivated audience of easily scared listeners? or, worse, can you imagine the reaction of someone who may be furious and stumbling on such a page?It could be dangerous.But the book makes the meaning clear, at least for me..... this is what it says (I paraphrase):Revenge is mine means you NEVER take revenge. You do the right thing, but you do not take revenge because the results of the actions of s/he, whom you perceive as your perpetrator, are NOT up to you, but up to a higher power.Phew!Early this year I took to A Course In Miracles again and found gems within it. I wanted to share some of the most interesting ones with you.Here they are:1.- INFINITE PATIENCE DELIVERS IMMEDIATE RESULTSThe first time I read this one I laughed. I mean, c'mon! Immediate results, oh yeah, ha ha ha.I decided I to put it to the test, that very day. I needed to open a new bank account, and I knew these things take forever. Also I kind of needed it to work because I was already late for work. So I wanted it to work.When the bank representative asked for the usual documents and apologized for the computer being slow, I took it as a sign. I said to myself: infinite patience delivers immediate results. Then...I said to him: "Take your time. No rush at all". (I was sweating inside)But I meant it.The account was open within 12 minutes (I tracked it). I've never seen that happen in a NYC bank before. I was early for work.You see, the thing with this spell is that it has magic in it: it removes "time" from the equation.The first part has the word "infinite" in it: We are outside of time, no beginning, no end, NO TIME.That in turn, is coupled with "patience", which is a human demonstration of infinity.The second part has the word "immediate" in it, which means NOW. NO TIME. And it is coupled with the word "result", meaning: something happens, NOW.NO TIME = INFINITY = NO TIME = SOMETHING HAPPENS NOW.And all we had to do was have an open mind and remember the affirmation.Stepping into the present with an open heart (as you would if you really wanted it to work), gives you an advantage...You are operating from infinity.Try it. You tell me.2.- A MIRACLE IS A SHIFT IN PERCEPTIONThe power of an alchemist lies not in turning dust into gold. That is just a metaphor to show the strength of the mind that lies behind such a miracle.A real miracle is one that happens when in spite of desperation, hurt, defeat, bankruptcy, we still shift our perception from lack, to abundance.We have our feet on the ground, we know where we are, but we also trust the infinite force that is keeping us alive right now, and we know we are abundant, in this moment, because we are here.How is that for a miracle?The Course in Miracles re-defines the meaning of a 'miracle' as something quite mundane which we can do only if we are strong enough.Why do we need to be strong enough? Because changing our habits is not easy.Looking at a situation in a different light requires humility. We need to feel the fire of anger, let it go, and re-open our minds for new possibilities.The stuff of alchemists...3.- I DON'T PERCEIVE MY OWN BEST INTERESTSThis one blew my mind right of its skull.I mean, how true is that? Give it a minute, let it sink in.There is a story of that enlightened monk who, one night, gets a visit from the parents of the teen-age girl that lives next door.The parents are furious, and they accuse him of getting their daughter pregnant. They tell him he will have to look after the baby. And that they will tell everyone in the village. That he is a fraud.The monk says: Is that so?No reaction. He is aware that he does not perceive his own best interests.The baby is born. He takes care of it. And the monk's reputation is ruined, of course.A year later the parents come back and apologize, they tell him their daughter confessed that the child was fathered by the butcher. And, that they want the baby back.The monk says: Is that so?The baby goes back to his parents.The monk's reputation is restored. Further, perhaps he now becomes a legend.We are talking about it now.The story survives because there is truth in it.---How does that introduction I told you about in the beginning continue? While searching for a fun romp through time and space this looked like it might fit the bill- based on other reviews.The book was rolling along okayish (welcome to dinoland) and then the 'annoying' type of sex started. Now I'm no prude, I have six kids and have thus partaken at least six times myself. What was annoying was the fact that it really added nothing to the tale and seemed written in solely to titillate the reader. The nasty partner was gross enough but I don't need to know how many fingers went where. Really I don't. And so ended the reading of this book. Unless I'm knowingly reading about Mr. Grey and his 50 shades of WTF, I'm in it for the story. If an author feels the need to resort to cheap sex to keep readers engaged, I'm outta there. Also-don't lend this to your young teens. They'll learn a LOT more than a bit of history.
Madelaine Maxwell, late 20's, historian with an attitude, is invited to a job interview at St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research. On the outside, the Institute looks like a boring research building. On the inside, it is teeming with top-secret time travel. Madelaine makes the first cut, and undergoes rigorous training with the other finalists, who are told, "Time is important in our organization. If you can't even get to an appointment in your own building on time, they argue, you're not going to have much luck trying to find the Battle of Hastings."There are sequences in this book that read like an action thriller. There were also laugh-out-loud moments for me. And this is a mystery, so there's going to be a murder – not who I expected and not why I expected.I confess that I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I thought it would be more cutesy or one big chiché. "Just One Damned Thing" isn't hard-boiled, but it has sharper edges and kept my interest. Which was piqued right way, incidentally, in Jodi Taylor's Introduction: "I made all this up. Historians and physicists – please do not spit on me in the street." The only part of the book that actually annoyed me was when the murder-mystery-time-travel-action was interrupted by the appearance of a Greek Muse. Why?4.5 stars rounded up to 5.Happy Reader
Full disclosure: I hate, I hate, I HATE (imagine the word bolded, underlined, and italicized as well) fantasy and science fiction. I'd be willing to slog through most classic texts from both the ancient and modern eras (and I have) before reading sci-fi or fantasy. However, I am a history nerd, born and bred from the womb thanks to my history nerd father. Upon seeing this book/series in my recommended list, the history-obsessed Anglophile reluctantly, but stealthily, overrode the English dweeb who avoids all things science-y and fantastical. And, oh my goodness, I'm so glad she did.First, most of us understand the disappointment of a book that promises "laugh out loud" moments then fails to deliver. This book not only delivers but does so in almost a machine gun fashion - over and over again before you have the chance to recover from the previous. Don't misunderstand me; there are moments where tears are certainly the more appropriate reaction. However, Taylor has a turn of phrase that makes me downright jealous. If I had an ounce of Maxwell's (the main character's) wit and sarcasm, I'd be a happy camper. Yet, Taylor can also create and convey through words the tragic and the devastating. Her narratives can stir emotion in the most unmoveable reader. Again, full disclosure: I've read all of the books at this point and, while I will not provide any spoilers, I will say that Taylor's descriptions of historical battles, from Troy to Hastings to the Somme, are both poignant and powerful. She provides interludes of dry humor - the calm before the storm - but her vivid retellings of those dark days brings forth a side of history that many of us don't consider. If we had the chance to go back and watch the events of history, could we watch people die? I'm not sure I could.As trite as it sounds, I picked up Book One and couldn't put it down. I eagerly pushed through the rest of the books and the collection of short stories in less than a week. I also eagerly recommended it to both my father and brother (who are bigger sci-fi fans but also history buffs like me). Of course, there are some negatives. It's not linear in the plotline (sci-fi...grrr); there's some science stuff that goes over the head (not completely up on my quantum/theoretical physics) and some plot devices get downright soap opera-ish. In other novels of this type though, I've noticed such events don't move the plot along and just seem gratuitous. Here, Taylor seems to have a good grasp of when to use the sensational and when to not. Her fictional group, known as just St. Mary's, is no stranger to "Sod's Law" (AKA Murphy's Law here in the States) so everything is constantly going wrong. Once in a while, you kind of sit there, roll your eyes, and go, "Seriously, again?" There is also the occasional desire to slap the you-know-what out of characters, especially main character Max. That's probably a triumph of Taylor's character development; however some may see it as downright annoying. I could see it both ways - it was annoying to me mostly because I can't slap a fictional character.Best advice I can give - do what I did: put your preconceptions aside and go in with an open mind. Now, if you're easily offended by language, innuendo, or straight up graphic depictions of natural human functions (done alone or in pairs...you know what I mean or you can surmise), then you might not want to read this. Other than that, I highly recommend this. The fun of fiction is that the reader has to participate in the willing suspension of disbelief. This series tests that to the utmost but, man, what a wild and glorious ride the experience brings!
Like all decent time travel books, this gets a bit twisty at times.The plot is enjoyable and entertains while leading the story forward while keeping tension high at times.People aren't too perfect, and in generally are on the bit flawed side(as people are) while still keeping the right balance of humor.I would give this a strong 4.5 stars out of 5 if they allowed this a more granular rating system.The only problem with finding a first good book in a series that has just been published is remembering to check back repeatedly over time for the next in the series, which with a new author is hard to remember.I really wish the Kindle app allowed you to flag authors so you would be notified when a brand new book came out. I mean it would drive up sales and make customers happy.It makes no sense that hasn't happened yet.

Okay so I can't even begin to describe how much I love this book. I am someone who typically does not read thriller type books but "Killing November" has changed my mind. I was able to participate in the ARC of this beautiful novel and now find myself so sad I must wait for the next installment. The character development, the plot, the twists, and the romance make this a must read. I found myself thinking about the story and where it goes from here. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!!
Such an amazing book. I love everything from Adriana Mather and did not think i could love a book more than her HTHAW, but this book has it beat. Adriana went to great books to absolutely outdoing herself with a fantastic book. I cant wait to read more and really hope there will be another book.
WOW! This book was something else. Adriana Mather really blew me away once again. I absolutely loved "How to Hang A Witch" and "Haunting The Deep", they were two books in a series about Samantha Mather and I 100% recommend reading those if you haven't already!! But "Killing November" gave me a totally new feeling while reading it, it was suspenseful and captivating while still keeping the elements of teenage life, family, and extraordinary storytelling by Adriana. It's every boy and girl's dream, perfect for all readers young and old. Each page keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more.I loved getting to know the character Ash, he's such an interesting character and I absolutely fell in love with him right away!The main character November goes to an international academy that's far from the norm, and she has to find out how she fits into it all and why she's there. If you like drama, mystery and murder, this is the perfect book for you, and a little flirting and romance doesn't hurt either! November faces a constant struggle trying to figure out who's good and who's bad, and it's becoming life or death.Adriana focuses on really letting her readers get to know the main character November in this book and in my opinion, I feel like we really do know her. I feel like I can relate to her as a reader, and that's what makes a book great. This is a book that you just want to read over and over again, and never put down! I definitely recommend this book to anyone.
Loved Adriana Mather's new book Killing November! if you've read any of Mather's previous books you know to expect a great mystery and fun, dynamic characters. In this story the main character November gets kidnapped and sent to an ancient school basically ran by a secret society. With November's world gone "Kansas bye-bye" she has to figure out not only how to fit in with the new crowd of dangerous kids, but also how to not get murdered by one of them - what can one say - that's the life of a teenager nowadays!
First, I would like to express how honored I am to have been a part of Adriana Mather’s ARC tour for her book Killing November.This book was extremely hard to put down. November finds herself in what can only be described as a leadership war she had no idea existed or that she knew she was a part of. She thought her father was sending her away for her own protection but found herself right in the middle of it all. She is brought to the International Academy Absconditi and is in even more danger that she ever thought she would be. This book is filled with danger and adventure, espionage and strategy, alliances and opposition, and most of all kinship. I already can’t wait for the second book.
5 hours and 17 minutes.... what a short time to be in the world of Academy Absconditi, I was lucky enough to be part of the ARC for this book and what a great adventure ! I was drawn in within the first chapter, November is a great character and I am so in love with Ash, no matter what ! As with her other books, Adriana Mather was able to create characters so relatable and believable they were like old friends. I find myself wondering who I would be in the Academy and what alliances I would form, I can’t wait for book 2 so I can catch up with November and friends.
Interesting story, do we know who we truly are? November thought she did. A mystery, action and coming of age story combined. We could hope for a follow up. As with Ms. Mather's other books this is a recommended read, a good story for all ages.
The moment I started reading this book I didn't want to put it down! Adriana Mather is by far one of my favorite authors, and produces consistently great books. Killing November is full of action and there's never a dull moment. Its well written and you can tell she worked really hard to get all the details correct! I can't wait to read it again!
