I started reading this book on my Kindle Fire and realized that the pictures were just not that easy to see at on the Kindle so I ordered a paper copy of this book. I think the pictures are very important and there are many of them. It's not the best book to read on a Kindle.This is an ultra fascinating book. It might not be something you want to read in one sitting and you may get confused by the names as I did, but it's still an amazing book. I couldn't help feeling sorry for these young women who didn't know anything about what their lives would be like and didn't seem to consider that they were being married for Daddy's money and not for love. Some did find love, but most didn't. Some of the women took stock of their situations and made the best of them. And some were miserable.Many of us have heard of the Carnegies and the Vanderbilts and the Astors. But, there were other incredibly wealthy families that I had never heard of. A very interesting book in many ways.
I already own the 1989 out-of-print version of 'To Marry an English Lord' in my collection and its one of my absolute favorites! So when I saw that it was going to be republished I thought that there was going to be new information or pictures (and possibly a color section), but I was mistaken, the only thing new is the lovely cover of Consuelo Vanderbilt-Balsan. On the flip side, I am happy to have it nonetheless, and thanks to the great success of Downton Abbey and Julian Fellowes, this gem may have never been back on the shelves.Without giving too much away, the book is full of pictures and information of everything you need to know about the many American heiresses who went across the waters (some by force)to marry a money-poor, land-rich English peer during the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. The book has plenty of background information and images of the American, Victorian, and Edwardian high societies, as well as enlightening and amusing facts concerning these Aristocratic American ladies and their British spouses. In the back there is even a directory of every American heiress (that is at least known) to have married into the English aristocracy.
This is a delightful book that provides the stories behind the stories that Henry James and Edith Wharton mined so successfully in various fictional treatments that addressed the trans-Atlantic phenomenon. Several prominent figures serve to focus this chronicle, Jennie Jerome Churchill, Consuelo Vanderbilt Churchill, Nancy Astor and Mary Curzon. Each was successful in her own way and managed to transcend the role of mere society hostess, Astor was actually the first woman to serve in Parliament. This entertaining book contains much to capture the period and is said to have served as the inspiration for Julian Fellows' creation of Downton Abbey. A good book to read on a Saturday afternoon after a stressful week.
This is, without a doubt, the worst excuse for history/biography I’ve ever had the misfortune to buy. If I could give negative stars, I’d give them in double digits. It’s nothing more than a bunch of disconnected, disorganized short essays crammed into a strange, headache-inducing format. The reader will encounter pages littered with photos, copies of newspaper clippings, and quotations, arranged in a haphazard fashion around the essays. I can’t help but get the impression that this is designed for people who don’t actually enjoy reading very much, but are fond of the type of magazines one finds in the rack beside the cash register at the grocery store. The tone of the essays reinforces this perception of mine. Sometimes I enjoy reading a few articles from such magazines, but when I pay for a book, I expect something completely different. If you are actually interested in history and enjoy reading, look elsewhere. I wish I had.
I found this book to be incredibly interesting. I usually stick to the Tudor period when I read, but this book was recommended to me so I gave it a go...loved it! I knew next to nothing about this time period except that the social scene was run by an extremely rigid set of rules. I've been to Newport RI and driven down the beautiful Bellevue Ave lined with the magnificent mansions of the Gilded Age, but never took the time to read about any of their owners.This book has certainly peaked my interest in this time period, and I've added to my reading list a bunch of other books pertaining to this era, including many of the works of Edith Wharton. I'm also thinking I may have to give Downton Abbey another go. I watched most of the first season via Netflix, but then never kept up with it. Now that I understand the dynamics of Victorian/Edwardian high society a little better, I may enjoy it more.If you're at all interested in this time period, or are a fan of Downton Abbey, then I highly suggest reading this. Another reviewer put it absolutely perfectly when she said this book is a "...cross between a dynamic history book and a high-society gossip rag". Being written in the style that it is makes this a super easy read and at no time do you feel bogged down by all the names and families being mentioned (it CAN be a little confusing at first, especially if you're new to all these names I was, but you'll catch on). I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort-zone to read this.
A very "different" read than I was expecting - what a great surprise! This deliciously detailed & described book is as much a comprehensive History of the British social structure from the ground up, as it is an explanation of one of the important economic impacts the United States had on England at the turn of the century to today. Finally, it offers interesting and often little known pieces of information, surprising explanations - and it's just a darn good read! I went back and forth, from the middle to the beginning to the end, then back again, looking at designs, dresses, pictures of the men & woman being discussed, even a descriptive listing of honors & titles. There are helpful indexes in the back, and a brief biog of each person in the English "Who's Who" of this great society, timeless in its uniqueness within the world. A book to keep, this one.

My favorite thing about this volume is that it provides an excellent historical introduction. There are many historical footnotes integrated into the presentation.I would not call this a textbook, but it does contain a fair number of exercises, gently called examples. However the level of these examples ranges from moderate to great difficulty. The text is dated 1930 and does not benefit from a modern view, but all results are rigorously presented, and sufficient background is provided for use by anyone with a background of Integral Calculus.The integral used in the development of the material is the Riemann Integral, but the author includes an appendix covering Lebesgue Integration.The Dover edition is of good physical quality, but my original copy is a bit worn from years of reference so I have purchased an additional copy that remains unwrapped.
Although very dated, it is one of the best books about series. It is not only about Fourier's series. It covers very deep information about analysing series.
Very unreadably poor xerographic reproduction on thin cheap bleeding paper. Every page contains many broken type font which especially make this mathematics book not only useless but also mentally annoying and physically irritating. I returned mine for refund; Amazon was quite polite.

I stuck around because there was a story within this story that drew me in, beyond the typical teenage angst romance- the hoarding mother, the OCD dad, the way they enabled each other within a hugely unhealthy lifestyle that crippled their kid’s emotional growth... Why? How would things change? Was the dad secretly the true hoarder blaming his wife? But ...nope. No explanation or exploration of the sub theme that dominated the entire story between the two main characters. Then there were all these characters whose stories were hinted at throughout the story, but though she made you curious about them, the author never developed them fully, or brought any kind of closure. The best friend, the cousin, the brother... in the end they only served as props to the main characters. It left me feeling like there were all these people I was supposed to care about, but then- they faded away from the story without explanation.and that epilogue? That hasty attempt at an ending to a story that wasn’t even fully told? Sigh.The writer had potential and her style was definitely there, but I feel like poor plot development and characterization undermined her best efforts in the end.
This is a good read. I LOVED the contrast between the main characters and how opposites attract. As well as the fact that 2 people who care for each other can both have completely different points of view without either being wrong... The people are believable and like able. AND I am a sucker for happy endings...
I don't know how she does it, but Chris Cannon always manages to write a book that sucks you.I relate so much to these characters!The story was sweet with some real life problems thrown in.I cannot wait to see what's next!

DNF at 35%I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.Bookish girl, Harry Potter references, and a neighborly romance--all things I thought I would love about this book. However, everything felt forced. The quips and snarky comments, the conversations between Nina and West, and even the Harry Potter references themselves. At one point West compares Nina to Luna Lovegood, but it just doesn't make sense.I love that Nina was confident and always wanted to tell the truth regardless of the consequences, but she was also incredibly pushy. She threw her thoughts and opinions around like no one could possibly feel differently. It was like she was too perfect at times. She never argued with her family, always did her chores without complaint, constantly thought of others, and even played matchmaker.I'm not sure I've noticed this with other books, but the author never actually explains what the characters look like (at least not during the 35% I read). This doesn't necessarily bother me, it's just something I noticed. I know some people enjoy thorough descriptions.In the end, I didn't feel like there was a natural flow to the story. It seemed to jump around, and at times was even hard to follow the thoughts of one person. It also felt like they tried too hard to be "bookish". They share a backyard and a driveway, but on the surface, not much else. When an upcoming Valentines Day dance forces Nina to dodge her brother's friend and West to evade his ex-girlfriend, they tell their prospective dates they're going with each other. This launches a tentative friendship that becomes something more. Nina and West both have troubled pasts that interfere with their ability to be completely open with each other. But instead of this turning into one of those, "I wish they would just talk to each other," stories, their secrets and half truths are plausible and heart wrenching.PlotThe plotting is well done with just the right amount of drama and angst. Nina and West navigate what it means to be in a romantic relationship while their respective family issues play out around them. Both feel helpless about their situations, which leads them to make choices they may not otherwise make.The CharactersI absolutely adored both Nina and West. Nina's constant need to debate everything and her brutal honesty made her lovable instead of annoying. She sees the world in a positive light, a "glass is half full" type. West's need to move far away from home as soon as possible is utterly relatable. Both characters experienced growth through the book, but West, more so, although I would argue he had more to overcome. Their relationship felt so authentically teen, without a lot of unnecessary drama.Top Five Things I Enjoyed About THE DATING DEBATE1. Playful banter. Rather than the debates causing endless fights, the arguments between West and Nina were more flirtatious than not.2. Honesty. This concept seems simple enough -- always tell the truth -- and yet it is fairly foreign in most contemporary romances. The heart of most conflict is the inability of the protagonists to tell the truth. But complete honesty brings its own conflicts that was a refreshing change from the usual.3. West. So wonderfully complex and authentic in his teen boyness.4. West. What's not to adore about a book-loving hippie chick?5. Gidget. I appreciated the truth about the anti-depressants and their information to inform us of how these have adversely affected people because the doctors do not tell you how dangerous these can be. It threw my granddaughter's husband into depression and then, just as the book shares, the doctor gave him two or three other meds to offset the effects of the first and second med- etc. Their marriage suffered becasue of how the drugs affected his mind even though at first they thought it made him get over his blues. They separated because he lost interest in the responsibility of life. People need to be educated about the effects of these meds. They mess with the mind just like illegal drugs do. They change the way a person thinks. And it keeps them from learning how to deal with the problems of life that we all have to learn how to deal with. Unless the person has a physical problem that is causing the emotional problems it is better to try for good counseling from a Biblical perspective. .
I highly recommend buying this book if you are on any type of medication for anxiety, depression, etc. I have read many, many books on depression over the years. This book is different, in that it shows us from a biblical perspective why medication is not always the answer. I have been on medications for 13 years. I have been on every known medication for depression, anxiety, and mood. I have been on every combination of these medications. Nothing every seemed to help. If it did, it was very short lived. This book to me was a lifesaver. It showed me that my problem was not a chemical imbalance, but a "Sin" or "Heart" problem in the way that I deal with things. Instead of covering up the pain with medication, this book shows how we need to fix the problem. It is chock full of bible verses to back everything up. I never thought I would be able to come off of my medications. I searched long and hard for the right medication, but all they managed to do was cause more side effects and over 100 pounds of weight gain. After reading this book and hearing other people's stories, I have hope for the first time in years. Read this with an open mind. You too just might find the answer you are looking for.
excellent book about looking at your "take" on life and it's challenges before (and hopefully instead of) just taking a prescription to relieve the sadness or stress. I have been on antidepressants twice in my life and mainly they helped me sleep during really strenuous times but I realized they didn't solve my problems. Helping me sleep, though, did help me not oversize my problems and helped me see God as good so meds can have a part to play. Expecting meds to make life rosey will never deliver, though.
I wished I would of read this book 40 years ago. Not sure if it would of prevented meds or not but would liked to have gone that path . All my life I was told “ where is your faith “? I know who Jesus is and am. Christian . I was always looking got a bandaids to “feel better†.
This is a life changer! I do not suffer from depression, nor anxiety but my emotions seem to be ruling my life. I didn't think I could really change my thinking, thus thoughts were driving me crazy. I thought many were from the devil "accusing the brethren" as it says in Scripture. Maybe some were, but many were not and I am feeling much freedom from black moods that were starting my days.This would be such a great asset for those who think they cannot help get rid of their depression and/or anxiety without drugs.It's a tremendous source of common sense.
The biggest problem is that it's written for women only. Why? All in it can be for either sex, both have depression and other problems so why discount half the population by referring to only women?Also, even tho it's good i found it to be too long. A person with depression or anxiety etc can't spend weeks or months getting thru the book. It needs to be more concise.
I opened this book with the wild hope that is could actually help me out of the black hole that fear had trapped me in. What I found was exactly what I needed. I found my life accurately yet sensitively described in the pages of the chapter on anxiety. The authors make clear the relationship between the mind and the body and how they affect each other, clarifying for me why I suffered mentally and physically the way I did. They go on to show the reader how they can finally be free of such agony. The authors are careful to exhort biblically, using God's word to confront, correct, and heal.I found the earlier chapters most helpful for my own struggles. The later chapters will be helpful if I ever find myself in any of the physical conditions which they address, or if I am in a position to counsel someone else in such a condition.It's no easy thing to battle depression, anxiety, or other such emotions, and the authors never present it that way. They clearly understand the pain and the struggle, and they are loving and gentle in their approach. I highly recommend this book to both women and men who struggle this way. I have purchased several copies already and am giving them out to people as I have opportunity.
As an advocate for the mentally and/or emotionally impaired, I've spent hundreds of hours reading about pharmaceuticals. This is one of the most down-to-earth books I've read. It's written in a very understandable and personal manner. Much food for thought Very, very good book.

Little tight to put the quarter in but once in the coin is in place it's more than secure good quality quarter collector with no regrets. I used a glass cup with smooth. Bottom to press them in.
A very fun collector's folder, since not only do you need to find all the 50 state quarters, both Denver and Philadelphia mint marks, but also you have to find the quarters from 2009, the territories. This proves to be a challenge, since a couple of these have become relatively scarce. Much fun!

The author, Alan Reed, gives an informative history of the Pickard China company. Included is information about the artists, the dates they were active, and the type of work that they performed. Fascinating reading. There is accurate depiction and information on back stamps and the dates that they were used. The book is full of beautiful color photographs of Pickard pieces, along with dates of production and an estimated value. Also included in this book are brief discussions of other manufacurers of similar china and art glass from the same era. This book is a must for any Pickard lover.
I had glass decorated by Pickard and this was helpful although mostly about their china. This book is well laid out and informative. A good buy.

I have a favorite piece of hand painted china, signed Pickard, and also by the artist. This book, beautifully illustrated and deeply researched for company history gave me more than my money's worth of background information.
