I've tried more than half of the recipes and I've read the entire book at least 3 times. I like to READ cookbooks for content. I find cookbooks to be interesting when they're well written. This isn’t a bad cookbook, but it’s not on my favorites list. I do like the color coded recipes and very enticing photos. But for me there isn't enough variety in the ingredients used in the recipes. I know lack of variety is not due to being Indian cuisine, because other cookbooks I have on Indian cuisine have a lot more variety. Most of the recipes I made tasted okay to very good, but nothing truly wowed me, there wasn't a lot that I'd call very "creative". In my humble opinion, there weren't enough "creative" recipes to earn use of the word creative in the title, disappointing me in that sense, which is why I give it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. I do recommend buying it, but only if on sale.Full Disclosure: I got mine from Goodwill so you won't see it as a verified purchase.PS) I expect lots of people to vote this review down, because this author has thousands of fans that will take the time to do it, to suppress the review from being seen. They will vote it down even if it's an honest review because they take offense to anyone saying anything bad about their love. Some people just don't value honest reviews that appear to make their heroes or favorite brands look bad. Happens all the time on Amazon. Sometimes you’ll even get verbally attacked for your honesty. Sad, but true.
I promised myself that I was NOT going to buy this book. I already own hundreds of vegetarian and vegan cookbooks and the last thing I needed was another cookbook. However, I really like the Vegan Richa blog and once I could virtually "look inside" the book, I realized that the majority of recipes appealed to me. I received the book a week ago. Here are the recipes I've tried so far: Spicy South Indian Tofu Scramble, Street Style Tempeh Wraps, Mint Cilantro Chile Chutney, Mashed Potato Fritters (baked), Dad's Favorite Cauliflower Potatoes, Tofu in Spinach Curry, and South Indian Chickpea Eggplant Stew. Every recipe was amazing and my husband and I were so impressed with how well the Mashed Potato Fritters turned out. The book is perfect in every way. The recipes are clear, concise, and well organized. The photographs are appetizing and inspiring. Richa gives preparation choices, always allowing you to make recipes low fat and healthy. The flavors are just fabulous. I've owned other vegetarian Indian cookbooks before, but have usually found that the recipes are excessively complicated or just too high fat. I did visit a local Indian grocery store and stock up on recommended spices and ingredients, a small investment that has already paid great dividends! These foods are even better than Indian restaurant foods because they are not heavy, loaded with greasy coconut milk, or fried.My only problem with this book is that I have to force myself to use my other cookbooks sometimes.Update: I have had this book for many months now and I've come to the conclusion that this book needs it's own category: cooking magic! The recipes are superb. I have not been disappointed in anything that I have made. An added bonus is that my house smells heavenly whenever I make any of these recipes. Recommended without hesitation.
I preordered this book the minute Richa announced she was publishing it. I have followed her blog for years and have consistently been impressed by her writing and her recipes, and this book did not disappoint. The recipes replicate the very authentic flavors, but are also very pantry-friendly for a US audience (who may not have access to specialized grocers), and come together easily in under an hour, even if you're a home cook.I really appreciated the time estimates given, the clarity of the instructions, the presence of great GF, soy-free and nut-free modifications, and the delicious end result. I think a lot of vegan authors feature a few "Indian" dishes, but these are authentic, and give a great sense of the scope and diversity of the cuisine and an access to making those wonderful dishes at home.Another thing I love about this book, as a vegan, is that Richa has always supported animal protection causes in the US and India, and I was so happy that part of the proceeds of this book are going to those causes as well. I really appreciate her compassion and her dedication not just to the flavors of the food, but also to helping animals.
