I bought this book for my 5 year old son, thinking it would be similar to "Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls", which he loves. Unfortunately, this is not the same as that fairytale, short story-type book. The stories in this book are quite in depth and descriptive, including some topics that are hard to explain to a young kid - details of the abuse that Beethoven suffered at the hands of his father, many mentions of violent deaths and living on. They are well-written, but far more appropriate to much older kids- I would say adolescents or teens would be more ideal. The illustrations are excellent and the choices of men to discuss are broad, but I will be putting this away for quite some time after being shocked in reading the first few stories.
I recently purchased both the English and French versions of this book. I was surprised to see that there are only 77 entries in the English edition, but 100 entries in the French. I am curious about the decision process excluding such notables as Thomas Edison, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Mohammed Ali, and John Carlos and Tommie Smith, among others. Since the books were purchased to be used in a classroom in order to show the students how children all over the world are reading the same books, I know I will get questions.
A bit intense for kids...stories included child abuse, parents brutally murdered, child slavery, etc (not all but a bunch). Granted it shows resilience, but yowza. More appropriate for older kids.
I bought this to read to my class of 8th Graders once a week. Surprisingly it wasn't too babyish for them. They actually enjoy the stories and love the colorful pictures. I'm extremely grateful that there is a book like this for boys because they are often forgotten. Although it is fair to conclude that most History books are about men and that girls are at a disadvantage, positive male role models are seldom highlighted and it is easy for boys to follow the wrong ones. About a year ago I searched online for a book for boys similar to Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls and others. I couldn't find anything and it was discouraging.I'm happy I've found this one!
Such healthy examples of strong men. I'm a single mom. My sons father isn't around at all so I wanted a book of examples of strong men who changed the world for the better. I think their could have been a better example than jeffree star as a man in makeup because of his past but I'm glad that it was depicted in general.
I really like this spin off the rebel stories for girls for my son. My only issue is being of a more nonviolent type of parent, there are some stories I would rather wait to read to my 7year old. Otherwise, great book, super inspirational men to be inspired by to ignite our boys own sense of wonder on how they can help our world and societies.
We had gotten our older daughter each of the "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" books, and were looking for stories to read to our preschool son that were empowering to him. These stories are exactly what I was wanting - they're unique, varied, and don't all fit into the prescribed roles that are put on boys by society. It's a great book, and I hope they make more!
Our grandson enjoyed looking through the book first, and seeing how many people he already was familiar with before he started reading. He enjoyed having us read to him as well. It was a good chance to connect with our grandson, and talk about history with him.
