I thought this book provided a fascinating glimpse into the Anasazi people of the American Southwest. The author structured this story in a way that followed the migrations of this cultural group as it followed the capriciously shifting climate. The religious practices, architectural prowess, connections to Mesoamerica, and even warfare of the Anasazi were explored in a balanced and even lyrical way.Many of the author's adventures in the back country were used in the book to introduce a new facet into the study of the Anasazi, and these passages in particular were poetically written. Child's descriptions of the harsh Southwestern landscapes provided more context into the lives and mindsets of his subjects, which I especially enjoyed.One complaint I had, and it is a minor one, is that Child's repeatedly referenced various types of Anasazi pottery, using it as a way to track the movements of the ancient populations. I had difficulty telling all this similarly idea river pottery apart. A mini-fieldguide might have been helpful.I recommend this book to those interested in the history of the Anasazi, aspiring archaeologists, and those enthralled by the cliff dwellings like Chaco and Mesa Verde.

Excellent book, not my normal genre, but I found it fascinating. On a whim I purchased this book as a deal of the day, because I had heard of the mysterious Anasazi but knew nothing about them, and had always been curious about the cliff dwellings.The book is written as a narrative about the authors journeys and discoveries chasing the roots and history of the Native American people who thrived and built a great civilization across the Midwest but seemed to disappear in the 13th century. I found the history of the people fascinating and was amazed at how far their empire stretched, was intrigued by the forensic methods archeologists were using to uncover their history, by how much was still hidden, and also by the telling signs of what happened in the end years as their civilization collapsed and fell to ruin.

I thought I had a pretty good understanding of the Anasazi, having visited many sites in the Southwest, but Craig Childs taught me otherwise. What a far more complex and interesting story than you get from the parks, told in a highly readable and interesting style. While others may dispute various points or issues, the depth of Child's research and the thousands of miles of boots on the ground are strong supporters of his conclusions. A must read for anyone interested in the Anasazi and their culture.

This is one of those rare books that may change how you perceive your world. I'm a European import and a newcomer to this part of the country (I now live in Salt Lake City), so this book opened up whole new aspects of our history of which I had been completely unaware (as, I suspect, are most Americans). I think it should be required reading for anyone who is under the impression that American history began with Columbus, or that the southwest is accurately and comprehensively depicted by John Wayne galloping through Monument Valley.Initially, like some other reviewers, I also was annoyed by the lack of maps, but then began wondering whether Childs was intentionally avoiding involving the reader in the minutiae of the story and so distracting him or her from the real point: that there were large and complicated civilizations in the American southwest, trading extensively, and moving around in response to climate shifts, failures of crops or water supply, or pressures from other groups. From his other books I envisioned Childs as somewhat of a mystic (although he certainly doesn't give this impression in person), and it would be entirely consistent with this for him to be trying to capture the spirit of the region and convey an overall portrait of an entire area steeped in a culture that, although perhaps seemingly alien at first, becomes increasingly comprehensible as we begin to understand the conditions under which it arose and flourished. Then the absence of maps really doesn't seem so important.

Craig Childs walked the vast space that the ancient people of the American Southwest trekked as they migrated from Chaco to Colorado to as far south as Mexico. With various archeologists adding to his wealth of information and theories about these people, Childs takes us with him on a journey of hardships faced by these people. He explores the factors that compelled them to wander, leaving behind foodstuffs for their return. He compares the artifacts produced by several ethnic groups who merged in this churning of cultures, religions, and political views that often led to wars on a horrendous scale. House of Rain delighted this reader with its clash of theories, vivid descriptions of places and objects, and its story of how people lived and died in a landscape so huge and complex, it defies our need to put things in order.

I have just sent out my favorite books email for 2017 and this is one of the three I recommended. I was entirely ignorant about the history of this place or at least guilty of a very shallow understanding of this piece of american history. This book could be considered a survey but his very personal approach to the story makes this book a much deeper description of this pretty unknown piece of our culture. My group of readers are a very extensively educated bunch and few of us had any idea. So, perhaps we need to stop worrying about Europe and start understanding the riches we have close at hand. Love child’s writing, also recommend Secret Knowledge of Water, another stellar read. So, buy this book and prepare yourself to be dropped in at the deep end of the pool of knowledge about your own history- great read, highly recommended.
