Our Bodies, Ourselves INTRODUCTION We are delighted to present Our Bodies, Ourselves—an in-depth look at women’s sexuality and reproductive health, from the first gynecological exam to sexual health in our later years. Since its first newsprint edition published in the early 1970s, Our Bodies, Ourselves (OBOS) has enabled women to learn about their bodies, gain insight from the experiences of other women, and consider how best to achieve political and cultural changes that would improve women’s lives. This completely revised and updated ninth edition, released on OBOS’s fortieth anniversary, covers topics ranging from sexual anatomy, body image, and gender identity to pregnancy and birth, perimenopause/menopause, and navigating the health-care system. This edition reflects the perspective and voices of a wide range of women, and their stories are told through new formats. At our invitation, more than three dozen women of all ages and identities participated in a monthlong online conversation about sexuality and relationships; we found their honesty and forthrightness so compelling that the conversation itself became the foundation of a new “Relationships” chapter. Other new voices include women’s organizations around the world that have created their own resources adapted from Our Bodies, Ourselves. Throughout the book, you will meet members of the Our Bodies Ourselves Global Network and read about their work on issues such as abortion, infertility, HIV education and prevention, and social activism. From distributing posters via canoes in rural Nigeria to setting up interactive websites in Israel and Turkey and reshaping health policy in Nepal and Armenia, their efforts exemplify movement building and the power of voices raised in action. This edition focuses on the core health issues—reproductive health and sexuality—that first brought the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective together. Some topics added over the years—such as nutrition, emotional health, and medical conditions that disproportionately or differently affect women—have been omitted this time, in part because information is now more readily available elsewhere. This has given us room to expand on issues such as reproductive rights, violence against women, and environmental health, which not only are centrally related to women’s sexual health and well-being but also are areas where, despite decades of advocacy and activism, women still face enormous challenges and obstacles that prevent them from leading safe and healthy lives. Our Bodies, Ourselves is both a text dedicated to factual information grounded in the best available evidence and a resource about health-care inequities and the work of those dedicated to ending social injustices. The many contributors to this book did not always agree on how to analyze the social, economic, and political forces that affect women’s health or how to characterize a medical controversy. When a conclusion remains uncertain, we have shared their questions and concerns so readers can make their own decisions in the absence of the kind of evidence we ultimately hope will be available. Our website (ourbodiesourselves.org) contains additional content, references, and useful links on women’s health topics not covered in this book.OUR BODIES OURSELVES GLOBAL INITIATIVE Ever since Our Bodies, Ourselves became a best seller in the United States, it has inspired women in other countries to adapt it—in part or as a whole—to their unique cultural needs. Through the our Bodies ourselves Global Initiative, we support more than twenty-two women’s organizations as they develop materials based on Our Bodies, Ourselves and use their resources in wide-scale outreach to advance the health and human rights of women and girls in their countries. Although the earliest projects were located primarily in Europe, we have since collaborated with organizations across Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe to bring culturally meaningful and reliable information to communities where it is most needed. As a result of our partnerships, resources based on the book are now available in more than twenty-five languages and in print, digital, and other socially interactive formats. You will read about our partners in the “In Translation” sidebars and we invite you to visit ourbodiesourselves.org/programs/network to learn more.As always, we recognize how the personal is often political and thus underscore when individual solutions are not possible or not lasting. Throughout the book, women who have joined with others to bring about change share their stories. The combination of practical information with political critique and women’s lived experiences has long been the hallmark of Our Bodies, Ourselves and is one of the reasons the book has remained one of the most enduring legacies of the women’s movements that grew out of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Much has changed in the United States since the first edition, when abortion was illegal, birth control was not widely available, and the few available texts on women’s health and sexuality—almost all written by men—discounted women’s experiences and perspectives. Today, information is abundant, but it is still difficult to find reliable information that encompasses the diversity of women’s experiences and teases apart the conflicts of interest inherent in many issues that affect women’s health. Far too often, corporate and pharmaceutical interests influence medical research, information, and care, and contribute to the unnecessary medicalization of women’s bodies and lives. This not only wastes money and poses avoidable risks but also can discourage women from questioning the assumptions underlying the care they receive and from valuing and sharing their own insights and experiences. The need for a book like Our Bodies, Ourselves remains as strong as ever. Changing the medical system, organizing for better care, and altering the larger social, political, and economic forces that limit women’s lives require creative and concerted efforts over a long period of time. We believe that enhancing reproductive health and sexual pleasure can play a significant positive role in all our lives and strengthen us as we work toward sustaining a vision of a world that will better nurture all women, men, and children. We encourage you to explore this book with curiosity and vision. OBOS Editorial Team: Kiki Zeldes, Christine Cupaiuolo, Wendy Sanford, Judy Norsigian, Amy Romano, June Tsang, and Ayesha Chatterjee Spring 2011

I got this for my two teen aged daughters. They were kind of embossed and rolled their eyes at me but when I wasn't looking I think it was read, at least some. My older daughter refers to it as "the vagina book." LOL. As a woman who grew up with my own addition of this excellent book, I am proud to have the newest addition for my own girls...even if they roll their eyes!
I love this book so much. I had one of them whenever I was a young girl back in the early 70s my mom gave it to me and it was my go to for any and every question I had for anything. Now it is my turn to hand this off to my daughter and she will be able to look up things that she might not feel comfortable asking. Even though she knows that she can ask us anything. I highly recommend this for children who are 10-11 or older. You are never too old for this book it answers just about everything. This product was a personal purchase for myself at the normal retail/list price. I am reviewing it solely because I want to share my experience with other potential customers. I have received no compensation for my review nor do I have any relationship with the seller or manufacturer of this product.
I bought this book for my husband because frankly, he's not real skilled in the bedroom--he just doesn't seem to know where things are or how they work. The book arrived on the date promised and I put sticky notes on the parts I felt would help him the most and then I left the book in his favorite easy chair in the man cave. He didn't say anything, but late that week, on Saturday night, I could tell that he had read the book!!! I highly recommend this book for wives who want to educate their husbands on the ins and outs of the female body.
I've followed this book about women by women from the original edition decades ago when I lived in Boston. Today the medical fields still fail to help women really know their bodies, and this book remains the hallmark of information for women to learn and understand themselves. So grateful as a young woman in finding this book and group of sharing women. It has helped me through life, and now as I enter my 70's.
OK I’m going to date myself, but I was in college when this book first came out. During that time this book was an eye opener to things that were never discussed in women’s health. I ordered this book when I read they might not be publishing it anymore. This book is still on topic and though I might not need some parts of the book I now read the later in life parts (which I ignored when I was younger).
Excellent book for teaching young women and men about their bodies. Primarily written for girls and women of all ages (as it goes through menapause) there are aspects that are appropriate for boys and men... about themselves and also to educate themselves about the women in their lives.Quite comprehensive and easy to understand. A much older edition was what my mother got for me and my sitters when we were preteens And it was quite well read
I wlll miss the info and wisdom as this is the final edition. If you do not have a copy for yourself or your daughter I urge you to get one. Medicine is still behind in informing women of their health issues and needs.
Everything that you need to know about woman, it’s in this book. I found that this book very useful, very informative and it is also help mothers who want their daughter can understand easily how important to know about themselves and all about women’s world, history and take care their own body.
It's a good book for a woman to have. I got an earlier edition when I went to college 25 years ago. I bought this one for my daughter as she leaves for school this fall. (Although the earlier edition was worded better.)

About the Author
Wendy Pini was born Wendy Fletcher in San Francisco. Growing up on an isolated ranch in Gilroy, California, Wendy's imagination was fueled by all forms of fantasy and mythology. At an early age she began spinning her own tales of elves, monkey-gods, aliens, and sorcerers. While her artistic talents were influenced by turn-of-the-century illustrators, film, and TV animation, her storytelling abilities evolved from a love of Shakespeare, Japanese history and legend, modern fantasy, and the epic poetry of the Ramayana. In 1977, a deeply personal project called ElfQuest was born. As the first continuing fantasy/adventure graphic novel series in America to be cocreated, written, and illustrated by a woman, ElfQuest became a phenomenon in the comics industry. Appealing to comics and sci-fi/fantasy fans alike, it attracted a unique and unprecedented audience, an equal mix of male and female readers. More than three million copies of the collected graphic novel volumes have been sold to date.Richard Pini is one half of the husband-and-wife team responsible for creating the well-known Elfquest series of comics, graphic novels, and prose works.

I have been a fan for 20 years of EQ and was eagerly collecting these volumes. I was already not crazy about how the artwork changed in Volume 4, but in Volume 5, half way through the book (which had so far been GREAT, great artwork, even better than Vol. 4) it totally degraded into unrecognizable artwork. Seriously, I can't tell which characters are who, it's so bad. I'd return the book except I'd only get $10 back after paying $5 for shipping (from a $15 purchase). I guess I'll keep it, and just enjoy the story up to page 481. I really don't think I'll read the rest. Sigh.
This is a massive 790 page collection which follows Ember's small tribe of Wolfriders which split up from Cutter's band in the previous volume and introduces Teir as a major member of our cast. The first 14 chapters (370 pages) finish the "Hidden Years" story line while rest of the book contains Ember's further "Wildhunt" adventures originally published in short monthly segments along with other stories taking place in the World of Two Moons in Elfquest II (1996-1999).So the question is, how good is Elfquest without much of Wendi Pini's direct involvement? The answer is completely dependent upon if you can accept the new artwork. All but 4 of the 39 chapters were illustrated by Steve Blevins and Lorraine Reyes with inking done by many others. In particular Lorraine who worked on most of the second half of the book has a unique unfinished style manga-like style which has a has been criticized harshly in the past. When I first heard about this book I was surprised that they included that portion because I didn't care for it either --though I never read the stories. Now I've done a 180 and think the second half is better than the first. Even Lorraine’s drawings are lovely and convey emotions especially well.So in a nutshell, if you liked Elfquest Vol. IV which included the "Shards" storyline then this one is a no-brainer! This one has less action and more heart, which the original Elfquest was all about. If you didn’t like the previous volume then this will be a tough sell and you might just want to skip to the Final Quest which has Wendi Pini’s penmanship. There’s also “Searcher and the Sword†and “The Discovery†by Wendy which take place immediately before the separate and much more recent "Final Quest". The first two will be included in the next (last?) giant collection along with other stories primarily about Bearclaw and then Cutter+Skywise's early brotherhood years.--For those who have read these stories before the "Wildhunt" portion does not include the incomplete "Mender's Tale" saga which went into some fairly controversial territory. I'll leave it at that.
I have all the original books from when they were released with high quality full color thick glossy pages. In this, the pages are thin paper and the images are simple black and white. It's just a let down from the original. The story line is still great and the characters are lively. Love the drawing and artistry, but I miss the vibrant colors.
Being a lifelong fan of Elfquest, I am ashamed to admit, I did not know this existed! I am taking my time, reading a chapter a night and enjoying Wendy Pini's amazing work... not just the style but the feel and mood she brings to each page. If you are even a little bit of a fan of this series, this is a absolute must buy! You will be thanking me later.
Love this comic and every thin they do. Great serious and brings your imagination to life.

I'm a teacher, I have been teaching for sixteen years. I have read many different books with the purpose of becoming a better teacher. However, I have never read a book like this one. It is so practical, and the principles are so easy to apply in the classroom.
This book has some great ideas and insights on effective classroom management. Our city's substitute teachers' meeting, which is held one night per month, even did a book study using this book to help all of us become more effective at managing a classroom and leading a lesson.
This book is a great read for teachers who teach because they want to make a difference in the lives of their students!
Good reminders: mainly to be positive, focus on what you can do to improve things, be respectful, care about your students first. You may not feel like it is groundbreaking but when you read it, but then it sticks with you. It is encouraging that some things that many good teachers do IS what we are supposed to be doing!
Please, save your money and your time. First, this book is poorly written. I suspect I may have enjoyed it more if this author happened to be a personal friend and I understood his personal points of view. Second, there is no order at all to it and it requires that you read through the indecipherable analogies that lead absolutely NOWHERE. Literally, everything in this book has been taught in teacher preparation courses and alternative certification programs. In my opinion, if you need this book to learn these skills you should not be teaching any class K-12. Lastly, It's a quick read, thank goodness!
Gave this to a friend who is a great teacher (awarded teacher of the year) and she is going to present it at a meeting for other teachers. She said she even learned a lot from it.
This book is a great motivator. It is a reminder to what effective teachers do and it makes you feel positive that you can impact students lives and be effective. The strategies are nothing new, but it's more of a book to get you thinking about your teaching and how you can put yourself back into new teacher mode and really work hard to be effective!
Excellent motivating book. I will read it again. This book made me to become much more light hearted about dealing with students. Kids spend so many hours in the classroom. We must make it a place they want to be.

Amazon.com Review
There is no one in contemporary literature quite like Barbara Kingsolver. Her dialogue sparkles with sassy wit and earthy poetry; her descriptions are rooted in daily life but are also on familiar terms with the eternal. With Prodigal Summer, she returns from the Congo to a "wrinkle on the map that lies between farms and wildness." And there, in an isolated pocket of southern Appalachia, she recounts not one but three intricate stories. Exuberant, lush, riotous--the summer of the novel is "the season of extravagant procreation" in which bullfrogs carelessly lay their jellied masses of eggs in the grass, "apparently confident that their tadpoles would be able to swim through the lawn like little sperms," and in which a woman may learn to "tell time with her skin." It is also the summer in which a family of coyotes moves into the mountains above Zebulon Valley: The ghost of a creature long extinct was coming in on silent footprints, returning to the place it had once held in the complex anatomy of this forest like a beating heart returned to its body. This is what she believed she would see, if she watched, at this magical juncture: a restoration. The "she" is Deanna Wolfe, a wildlife biologist observing the coyotes from her isolated aerie--isolated, that is, until the arrival of a young hunter who makes her even more aware of the truth that humans are only an infinitesimal portion in the ecological balance. This truth forms the axis around which the other two narratives revolve: the story of a city girl, entomologist, and new widow and her efforts to find a place for herself; and the story of Garnett Walker and Nannie Rawley, who seem bent on thrashing out the countless intimate lessons of biology as only an irascible traditional farmer and a devotee of organic agriculture can. As Nannie lectures Garnett, "Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you don't see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and that's the moral of the story." Structurally, that gossamer web is the story: images, phrases, and events link the narratives, and these echoes are rarely obvious, always serendipitous. Kingsolver is one of those authors for whom the terrifying elegance of nature is both aesthetic wonder and source of a fierce and abiding moral vision. She may have inherited Thoreau's mantle, but she piles up riches of her own making, blending her extravagant narrative gift with benevolent concise humor. She treads the line between the sentimental and the glorious like nobody else in American literature. --Kelly Flynn

From Publishers Weekly
HA beguiling departure for Kingsolver, who generally tackles social themes with trenchantly serious messages, this sentimental but honest novel exhibits a talent for fiction lighter in mood and tone than The Poisonwood Bible and her previous works. There is also a new emphasis on the natural world, described in sensuous language and precise detail. But Kingsolver continues to take on timely issues, here focusing on the ecological damage caused by herbicides, ethical questions about raising tobacco, and the endangered condition of subsistence farming. A corner of southern Appalachia serves as the setting for the stories of three intertwined lives, and alternating chapters with recurring names signal which of the three protagonists is taking center stage. Each character suffers because his or her way of looking at the world seems incompatible with that of loved ones. In the chapters called "Predator," forest ranger Deanna Wolfe is a 40-plus wildlife biologist and staunch defender of coyotes, which have recently extended their range into Appalachia. Wyoming rancher Eddie Bondo also invades her territory, on a bounty hunt to kill the same nest of coyotes that Deanna is protecting. Their passionate but seemingly ill-fated affair takes place in summertime and mirrors "the eroticism of fecund woods" and "the season of extravagant procreation." Meanwhile, in the chapters called "Moth Love," newly married entomologist Lusa Maluf Landowski is left a widow on her husband's farm with five envious sisters-in-law, crushing debtsDand a desperate and brilliant idea. Crusty old farmer Garnett Walker ("Old Chestnuts") learns to respect his archenemy, who crusades for organic farming and opposes Garnett's use of pesticides. If Kingsolver is sometimes too blatant in creating diametrically opposed characters and paradoxical inconsistencies, readers will be seduced by her effortless prose, her subtle use of Appalachian patois. They'll also respond to the sympathy with which she reflects the difficult lives of people struggling on the hard edge of poverty while tied intimately to the natural world and engaged an elemental search for dignity and human connection. In Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver masterfully delivers three narratives which begin in late spring, wind through the burgeoning summer of an Appalachian mountain and valley, and come together as autumn raises its cooler head. Deanna is a 38-year-old, divorced, childless forest warden who has come to love being alone in her woods near the top of the mountain that overlooks Zebulon Valley; she is determined to stay that way until a stranger comes along with the buds of May. Lusa, a "foreigner" of Polish descent from Lexington (Kentucky or Virginia), left her university post to marry Cole Widener, a farmer in the Valley whose land no longer supports them. When Lusa the bride becomes Lusa the young widow, she has to figure out whether she wants to stay among these people and how to make a living farming in a valley where the last successful crop was tobacco. Septuagenerians Nannie Rawley and Garnett Walker are next-door neighbors who hold exactly opposite views of life; every day brings another battle at the fence that separates their land. These stories keep time with the riotous summer; they teach that life will be created and will continue in spite of the odds. At times, Kingsolver gets a little didactic--as these people of the Valley would say, "preachy-teachy"--having her characters deliver lectures or engage in arguments about the environment, the ecosystem, and the food chain. There are also more subtle lessons, though: farmers who can't compete in the food market, stay in debt, and end up driving delivery trucks or working at the new auto plant far away. But life keeps going. It simply has to. At least these people have each other. About Kingsolver's prose: When I began to look back over the book to find a good example, I started reading the book all over again; it's that good. I would like to offer this one passage (it's not a spoiler): "When the rain and thunder died and the wind had gone quiet, coyotes began to howl from the ridge top. With voices that rose and broke and trembled with clean, astonished joy, they raised up their long blue harmony against the dark sky. Not a single voice in the darkness, but two: a mated pair in the new world, having the last laugh." You can read the rest of the good stuff for yourself.
“Prodigal Summer†showcases some of Barbara Kingsolver’s loveliest descriptive prose but is hampered by too many characters preaching their gospel of environmentalism. I love the social conscience exhibited in all of Kingsolver’s work but having not just one but three characters driving home her message of environmental responsibility stole some of the magic from her solid storytelling. The novel unfolds through alternating chapters about three characters living on the land in rural Appalachia. Deanna is a park ranger with a passion for nature living alone on a mountain until a hunter who might as well be called Fantasy Man shows up. Lusa is a young woman adjusting to widowhood and her in-laws while struggling to find an earth-friendly way to make her farm solvent. Garnett Walker is an “old fart†with little patience for the independence and organic methods of his neighbor even while he struggles to revive the American chestnut trees on his own property. Each chapter deftly advances these three stories and ends in cliffhangers that made me want to read on. Ultimately, the author reveals how all the characters are connected.Throughout, Kingsolver offers lush descriptions of the beauty and fecundity of nature in summertime while her characters deal with the human desires unleashed by the season. Her prose is superb. After a hard rain, the dripping leaves of the forest echo with a “sibilant percussion.†A blacksnake "oozed" down the wall of a log cabin “in an undulating flow like a line of molasses spilling over the edge of a pitcher.†The plotting and pace are excellent and I laughed out loud quite a few times at funny observations or situations. My only problem is that too many characters descend into long-winded lectures on the necessity for humans to adopt more earth-friendly environmental practices. A lighter touch would have conveyed that important message more effectively and made this a sleeker, superior 5 star book.

Enjoyed the characters in the story. I liked the way it flowed, the sides seemed to remind of y family.
This collection is really awesome. I enjoyed the characters and the stories a lot. Ms. Chisum has done a great job with the town of Last Chance. Sweet, romantic and just good clean fun to read.
These stories of The Blizzard Brides was very different. Hard to get my mind wrapped around them. Hard to figure out. Can't say they were strange, but difficult to follow. If all her books are like this, I probably will not read them.
No explicit sex ans short novel. I love cowboy stories and the Mail Order Brides are new to me.

It`s an excellent short summary of a complex topic. Sounds like the author has followed the same path I did. I saw Gores film and assumed the information in it was correct. After starting to examine a lot of data I find myself believing that higher CO2 levels has little or no impact on climate and is generally a good thing. The author presents some of the elements that people worry about in the initial chapters e.g. wind, rain, warming etc. and the reasons why we shouldn't be alarmed about our recent global warming period (since the little ice age) and explains where we are really in terms of ice ages / and inter-glacial warming periods. It`s a very short read and would be good for those that don`t have the time to spend researching a highly complex topic. The author also has a large appendix with many links for those that wish to dig deeper. The only thing I would say it`s missing is some good graphs e.g. say to explain how CO2 levels have been much higher in recent history or how there is generally no correlation between CO2 levels and temperature other than occasionally when CO2 lags temperature...
I've been studying the skeptical and current views on Climate Change. Good, basic review. A better, more detailed book is Roy Spencer's (NASA Scientist) "Global Warming Skepticism for Busy People". Both show the wide variability, if not inflated view, of the IPCC reports on warming by 2100. The IPCC is sanctioned by the UN, which is not known to be that supportive the USA superpower.CO2 is a factor, but there is natural climate warming going on also since the last Ice Age about 12k yrs ago. Neither book discusses alternative "cooling" methods found in other sources, such as injecting particulates in airliner exhausts to increase reflectance of the Sun (i.e Volcano effect). Also, Science" is never settled, they should always be looking for improvements. And if you're not sure of the answer, you can be working (spending money) on the wrong problem. Enjoy
This is a real-life primer for all of us who might not remember weather/climate basics and the immeasurably important role of CO2 in sustaining life on Earth. Get the facts, folks.
Each element of climatology is covered in just enough detail so that the reader can quickly grasp the true issues.
Imortant concepts to understand
Good content and understanding that explains stuff through real data. Fun, fast read.
Author presents a myriad of facts which look well beyond our last 200 years which proves that CO2 does not drive temperature and that we are in an ice age-old the planet has been far swarmed and also had much higher levels of CO2.
