2.5 stars I have read other books by this author. I like this author and look forward to her upcoming books. I was really excited for this book. I really wanted to love it. I love the premise. I enjoyed Jane's character. For me, though, I really struggled with Algernon's Character. SPOILERS:He's supposed to be somewhat uncouth, but he still is a man from the 1800's. On coming to the modern era, he quickly turns when seeing a woman in shorts. He stops himself from kissing Jane, but then he turns around and goes with Lady Anna to a party and drinks several glasses of alcohol (they did frequently drink alcohol in the 1800's, so he would know his limits and the consequences), kisses another woman, dances provocatively (by 1800's standards), and engages in a fight. He compares the atmosphere to a brothel and totally accepts it. Yes, he drank, but again, he's a man who made the choice. The fact that he kissed another woman is never specifically addressed. Later, after he has told Jane that he wants to be her boyfriend, he still has no problems going off with Lady Anna and putting his arm around her. He is okay with being a boyfriend because it doesn't necessarily "lead to marriage." He is okay with kissing her with no commitment because it is okay in her time. He also goes rather quickly from looking away at a woman in shorts to embracing how women dress today. I just don't think it is realistic for a man from the 1800's to so quickly step away from his values. An uncouth man from the 1800's, unless he was a complete rake, would still be very conservative by today's standards. He struggled with doing the auction but was completely okay in other situations with attention from multiple ladies. After not even being in our time for a day, he was willing to go to a woman's room. I really wanted to like Algernon, but his morality was really fluid and inconsistent for me. He wants to spend time with Jane because he's supposed to have strong feelings for her, yet he has no problems going out with others to see the city. He never made a definitive stance to Lady Anna that he likes Jane. He's a guy, but he can't be clueless. Besides physical attraction, I did not really feel anything between them. Also, he totally talks behind her back about her being a commoner, but then says he doesn't feel that way when Jane asks him. I know that we're supposed to feel that Jane betrayed him, but honestly, I felt more betrayed by him. Again, I do like this author. I think she writes well. I liked the regency speaking patterns. I liked Jane overall, but I felt like she should stand up for herself a little more. Isn't that one of the points--strong women? I think they were both selfish at times, but the whole Algernon hanging out with two women really bothered me. Jane does hang out with Charles but she is pretty clear it is for research after meeting Algernon. Once she and Algernon are more together, she doesn't go off with Charles. Algernon basically represented what I don't like about the regency period--the men can go off and do whatever with whomever. I would definitely look into her other books, but the whole reason I like "regency men" is their sense of propriety and honor (in terms of behaving gentlemanly, not sense of entitlement). Algernon just didn't seem to have much of that.
I am loving this series. A fun clean read and a very sweet romance that Jane Austen would probably love too!
Her regency man come to life! Jane is an expert on Jane Austen and that time period. She has the opportunity to spend 3 weeks in England for her latest research project. Two of the weeks will be a reenactment of said time period at Twickenham Manor. While there she meets the man she has lovingly called, her regency man. But how is that possible? The photo is 200 years old. Algernon is a duke who wants to shed responsibility for awhile. He receives an invitation to attend a mysterious event at Twickenham. Little did he know he would be time traveling. A fun, clean regency/ modern romance.
This is my new favorite of Johnson's books! What a fantastic story! I love the story. I love the characters. I love the WORLD. Twickenham and all it can be is simply fantastic. Brilliant, really. I'm looking forward to (hopefully) many many more books in this magical works of Twickenham time travel.
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. This was my second book in this series and my first regency book by this author. I have read many of her contemporary romances. I appreciate that this was a clean, sweet read. It is a love story between Algernon and Jane. There are a couple of other characters that could make this book into a love triangle but really don’t. I love Regency books and while this book was it was also a mix of contemporary since it takes place mostly in the modern time. I like time travel books. While I sometimes struggle with the ethics of traveling back in time with knowledge of the future that can change many lives and events, I think the author does a good job of avoiding many issues there. Over all I would recommend this book. It was quite enjoyable. If you haven’t read all the books in the series don’t worry, the books can be read as stand alone.
Algernon was written so well. He was flawed and the typical reckless son of a duke, but the author gave him dimension and growth that immediately made you love him and root for him even when he did dumb things. I had a harder time with Jane. She felt one dimensional with no interests other than her Regency Era research that made it hard to connect with her. I would've liked to have seen a few small moments of growth before her big epiphany at the end. The story line was light and fun in a very Kate and Leopold way. The author handled a Regency Era man in modern times with creative wit. Lady Ann's love letter seemed inconsistent with the friendship that was set up in the plot and her seeming disinterest in marriage, but the overall story kept me reading late into the night.
Dating the Duke is a well-written time travel romance. The main characters, Jane and Algernon, are likable. Jane's actions are very selfish at one point, but she redeems herself. The plot has twists and turns and moves at a good pace. The dialogue flows naturally. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion.
This was my first story from this author. I enjoyed the clean, fun romance. It took a little while to get into the story but once I did it moved fast. I like the combination of contemporary and regency details. I now have to go back and read the others in the collection.I received an ARC copy for my honest opinion.

Every company needs growth strategy/IQ that makes sense to them, even if it's a small company because suddenly a competitor may show up from nowhere that changes the landscape and to stay in the game, even small family owned life style businesses have to think with growth IQ.
This is by far one of the most useful business books I have read in a very long time. It is packed from beginning to end with actionable information on every conceivable angle to grow your company. I tip my hat to the author, the amount of research she did is truly impressive.

Book arrived on time and in great condition. I haven't read it yet, but I plan to do so. I am reading several books about outstanding women in WWI, WWII, American Revolution, Space, American Frontier, etc. Very inspiring to read about these brave women. I especially recommend for young ladies of teenage years.
My daughter says:I'm a 12 year old girl and found this really boring. It was assigned as a summer reading book for my class and I struggled to finish it because it lacked story. Once I was even bored to sleep while reading this book. But hey, if you're into reading about something with no storyline or plot at all, this is the book for you.
Enjoyed the women and their quests. Felt like it was written for a younger audience. Middle School or so. Once again I will probably pass it along to the right guest who cruises through my book shelves.
I found this book a great compilation of some of the most impressive women explorers of the past and the present. I learned of some I hadn't heard of such as Helga Estby who walked across the U.S. in 1896, and Stephanie Schwabe, a diver/caver explorer. I have read all of Annie Peck, Kira Salak and Helen Thayer's books and I found their sections good overviews of their adventures.This book is inspirational for adults, as well as high school students. The author did his research and even interviewed some of the explorers. Highly recommended.

I didn't like the story as much this time round but it was still interesting and a fast read. I read it in half a day. Still prefer Katherine over Jonah! Ha ha
And by "done it again", I mean "created another great history/mystery time travel tale".The fourth installment in The Missing series, Torn by Margaret Peterson Haddix, follows Jonah and Katherine as they travel back in time to the year 1611. The missing child that they must return to history in order to correct time? John Hudson, son of the famous (famously crazy, that is) Henry Hudson. The only problem: JB, Jonah and Katherine's time travel...supervisor, you could say, is unable to find the 21st century boy who is actually John Hudson to send him back to the past. A truly missing child!But, of course, there are more problems than just a missing (missing) historical figure. Jonah must pretend to be John, mask, wigs, clothing, and all, in hopes of setting history straight. However, after an hour or so aboard the Discovery, Henry Hudson's ship, all time is thrown out of balance. Tracers, ghost-like figures that show what is supposed to happen in history, go missing, Jonah and Katherine lose all connections with JB, and an evil Mr. Prickett threatens the safety of the ship's crew, most significantly Jonah.Taking matters into their own hands, Jonah (still disguised as John Hudson) and Katherine (who is invisible thanks to the time traveling device, the Elucidator) try to make sense of the odd mishaps in time that keep occurring and attempt to save history and rescue their friends who are still stuck in the year 1600.Captivating and well-paced, Torn provides a set of loveable characters and rich historical settings to create an enjoyable read. Fans of the previous books in the Missing series will not be disappointed.
My almost 14 year old son loved this book and series. He read it for optional summer reading.
I am a 12 year old girl who loves reading and when i started reading the missing series i fell in love. I would totally recommend this book to anybody who loves reading, or for any parent who wants their child to start reading. It is also a book that is for pretty much all ages.

The first Black American in the NHL tells his story ― now in trade paper Val James received his first pair of skates for his 13th birthday and by 16, he left his home in New York to play in Canada, where he was the only black person on his junior team and, often, in the whole town. While popular for his tough play and winning personality, the teenager faced racist taunts at opposing arenas. The prejudice he encountered continued at all levels of the game. He became the first African American NHLer when he took to the ice with the Buffalo Sabres in 1982, and in 1987 he was the first black player of any nationality to skate for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This book was written well and takes you through an interesting story of a black kid from Long Island who became a professional hockey player. The racist taunts he got from players and fans were heartbreaking and made you root for Mr. James. It also painted a vivid picture of what life as a minor league hockey player was like in the 70s and 80s. The reason I did not give this book five stars is because I was left wanting more. For example, Mr. James was close to making the NHL for years (played in the AHL, the next league down), how did he feel about this? Wouldn't it be frustrating being on the outside looking in for years? Another question I had were his relationships with those in the African American community, did he have fans? Was he ignored? Was he ridiculed by them for playing a "white" sport? Finally, what was his life like after retirement? Was he financially OK? Where did he live?Anyway, if it was a lousy book I wouldn't care so it wouldn't be an issue. The thing is, the story was compelling enough that I wish the authors had given us more information.
I purchased this book recently and read it over a vacation. The book covers the trail of career from a Long Island rink Vals father worked at, through his minor (youth) hockey, minor pro and the games he played in the NHL.To re-state the fact, he was the first American born African American player to play in the NHL.A lot of the book deals with the race based abuse Val had coming up through the ranks of the game. But he also had a lot of the same experiences most young men did coming up through the game, with a lot of the same pranks and adventures.Val was a tough hombre, but he also was persistent and followed his dream. He could have had more time in the NHL and was not given proper use in my opinion. So much of a career is dependent on teams management and coaching and ownership. The Leafs were always a team in the bright spotlight of scrutiny and pressure. I believe at the time ( by Val's jersey) were owned by the legend (both good and bad) Harold Ballard. Yeah things were a bit wacky under that regime.I had previously been involved in a book project about minor league hockey in a specific city and am always looking for hockey biographies and inside stories on the game and players particularly from previous eras. Much of Val's story may have been lost in time and it was indicated that some has been omitted for discretion. It took some luck as well as persistence to find him, a small story in itself. As my headline implies, I wish the book was twice as long, it was that entertaining and touching for me. Congratulations Val for having your story finally told, its well worth the price

This depends on individual views I guess, but the 'f word' is used regularly as are others. I also purchased the audio version for car rides, so reading it AND hearing it is a double whammy from my perspective. I just was not at all expecting this when purchasing for summer reading for my 7th grader. As far as a book review overall, it is a good read for boys in particular who aren't wild about reading and if your son happens to be obsessed with ice hockey, he will likely enjoy it, but just beware the language at the outset.
I loved the candor of this book, I mean Mr V. just told it like it was! The only thing I couldn't appreciate about this novel was all the accolades at the end. If the people thought so highly of Mr. V., why didn't he get more time in the pros? Also why didn't any of them do anything when the crowds at various stadiums were calling out the "n" word? America is an ill country due to their racist ways! It's real, sad when a person can't enjoy the sport they love because some ugly people think they don't belong. As for me I'm very proud Mr. V. was a hockey player! A black hockey player how great, thanks for this fantastic book Mr, V. By the way I really enjoyed the pictures as well.
Great story from a former Suffolk Duck defense partner. Skidmore... Brophy ... all great memories of a time long gone. It was an honor to play with this inspirational legend and being coached by Brophy. I still have a scare on my knuckle from a brawl were my defense partner Val pulled me out of the scrap by my collar. He lifted me up off my skates and placed me back down. That’s teamwork... I am sending this book to my older brother who played in the Met league.
I would highly recommend this book to any person who loves the game. This is a fantastic story of perseverance resilience and heart. I never even knew his name before reading this book and now I have so much respect for this man after everything he had to go through to achieve his dream. If u want a brutally honest portrayal of a kid who whatever had to be done to achieve his dream this is the book for you. I would give this a thousand stars if I could.
An excellent account of the trials and tribulations of a young man in his attempt to gain success in professional hockey. When one considers the fact he was black where a very small percentage are black, the treatment from fans could be merciless . He literally fought his way from the lowest levels to the ultimate top of the hockey world - the National Hockey League. He paid his dues in a time that fighting was considered by many as the easiest route to success, he showed that he under that he would be the target of many fighters seeking to boost their reputations. He started late when compared to Canadian kids but through his constant drive but through perseverance and constant drive to meet his ultimate objectives he rode buses for years and eventually met success.The book is sometimes written in some cases from the viewpoint of the language of the hockey dressing room. Consequently, ther reader should not be shocked.I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend in showing one of the difficult hockey life as one strives to make it to the NHL .
