About the Author
Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands. After being arrested in 1944 for helping Jews escape the Nazi regime, Corrie spent the last year of World War II in various prison camps. After the war, she was invited to share her experiences in over sixty countries and was honored by the state of Israel for her work during the war. Her life story, The Hiding Place, was originally released in 1971. In 1977, she settled in California, where she remained until her death in 1983, on her 91st birthday. John and Elizabeth Sherrill have authored or coauthored numerous best sellers with sales in excess of 50 million, including The Hiding Place, The Cross and the Switchblade, and God's Smuggler. Their ongoing work as roving editors for Guideposts magazine has taken them from their home in Westchester County, New York, to assignments in five countries.

great novel, wonderful, true life story
I was absolutely absorbed by this book. I looked forward to every time I picked it up to read. I must start by saying that I am Jewish and absolutely do NOT share the religious views of Corrie Ten Boom. But, this story is so engrossing and moving that my religious views were irrelevant. This is the remarkable story of a remarkable family that literally laid their lives out to save Jews in Holland during WWII. These are people I wish I could hug. Don't be put off by the religious views expressed. Those views caused heroic people to show mercy and empathy in the most brutal period in recent history. The views were not preachy. I only wish that I could do something good for any person that would give respect for the wonderful people in this story.
Nothing in the description informs the reader that this is an abridged version. Many key parts have been cut and section edited and changed so that they read dramatically differently. I ended having to re-buy the other version (the 35th anniversary one) so I could have the entire book.
I have read this book probably 6 times over the course of my life. You think I’d be tired of it by now. Not only do I love reading it and getting something new from it each time, I make sure I have a copy on hand to give out to others. Yes, it is that good. It is a true story of a tragic time in the history of mankind. It details the love, warmth and courage of a family of three; an elderly father and his two spinster daughters who risk everything to save their Jewish neighbors and strangers alike from the Nazi death camps. Read this book! You will not regret it!

I sit here at a loss for words because I know that nothing I can say will begin to display the emotions and thoughts swirling around in my mind. Ms. Boom's story touched a piece of me so deeply, I'm afraid that I will never be the same now. Seeing what she saw, hearing what she heard, things such as these will forever be with me.There are so many things that I have learned when it comes to this story, I would like to state just a few of them here below- not enough to give anything in this story away, but enough to draw you in so that you will want to read what this marvelous woman has to say."There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still." -Casper ten Boom passed on by Corrie."'But,' she said, 'this is what the past is for! Just as you would sit respectfully in front of an aunt at a Holiday feast listening politely to a tale, so shall you listen to this one in all its entirety. Every story should be heard. Tin Boom's story holds your attention from concert to cover, bringing you along as if you feel sorrow and joy along side. Encourage others to read it like I was encouraged to read it. Pass history on so that love is spread no matter what religion you are.
It's taken me 6 decades to finally get around to reading Corrie ten Boom's remarkable story. I'm in awe at Corrie's honesty in her weakness, but more in the faith in both Corrie and her sister,Betsy, that sustained them through atrocities I can only imagine....A faith that even enabled them to find joy in fleas! Reading this story has certainly put my own difficulties into perspective and has inspired me to look so much more closely at my own faith. I am truly grateful that I have been so blessed, but I know now that I have to trust God more in every aspect of my life. Thank you, Corrie ten Boom, for sharing your story and for sharing the love of God with a very dark world.
Riveting true story of occupied Holland during WWII. Could not put down, though I knew the unspeakable would occur. A good reminder for today of how fascism starts: First the "state" controls the media and commerce, then bullying comes, with rationing, brutality, curfews, disappearances, genocide. But the hatred, oppression and unspeakable crimes against humanity did not stop the love and good works of this extremely talented, intelligent and faithful family. Their love, their story, and the Resistance, has survived. With many family photos that remind one of one's own relatives only a generation or so ago, and make the story unquestionably come to life. An excellent, excellent read for lovers or history, mystery, or human drama.
For several years, my wife kept trying to convince me to read The Hiding Place. But I thought it sounded like a little child's book. So I kept putting it off. Boy, was I wrong! What an awesome story. I'd give it more than two thumbs up, but I only have 2 thumbs! Well worth taking the time to read, ponder, and absorb how an unseen power guides our lives far more than we realize. I experienced so many moments of insight as I read this book. Among them were Sam Schwartz's discussions on-The importance of maintaining lane and road markers and protecting roads from unanticipated sources of clutter and confusion, such as road signs defaced with graffiti that would confuse an automated vehicle image processing system;-The criticality of rethinking land use and street real estate allocations among vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians-The intricate understanding of the non-verbal cues pedestrians and drivers interpret when a driver is edging toward a turn and a pedestrian is trying to cross the street in the crosswalk. Mr. Schwartz's understanding of the complexity of this and the difficulty of having it be translated and used in an artificial intelligence system was masterfully conveyed.-The challenge of having cities and towns dependent on parking violations revenue find other sources of revenue to replace lost revenue.There were many more discussions that wove together the technological, regulatory, economic and social challenges of transitioning to autonomous vehicles. I particularly liked his discussion of the EU's Global Data Protection Regulations and the degree to which they will inhibit the data collection that any artificial intelligence system, including the one that operates with autonomous vehicles, needs to learn and improve itself.The one subject that might have been covered in more depth is the degree to which AVs will depend on curbside communications infrastructure that has fragmented ownership and leasehold rights, obsolete rules on who can connect to a utility pole, and the potential for municipalities to overcharge those who want to build out 5G infrastructure on municipally-owned poles. However, that is a minor omission in an otherwise outstanding book.This is the kind of book that has been written so thoughtfully that I expect to be an exceptionally useful resource 20 years from now.
This book is much less about autonomous vehicles than the author's decades old policy push to reduce the use of automobiles and infrastructure used by automobiles while ignoring much of the problems for the economy, Uber drivers, the disabled and the increasing numbers of elderly that would be caused if his policies were followed to the extent he hopes. Maybe he likes riding his bike in a snowstorm, but he should also try to get bike riders to stop ignoring red lights, stop going the wrong way on one way streets, stay off sidewalks, use lights at night, and use the bike lanes when available, etc. Maybe he should also consider writing about the advertised subject of his book. The most useful thing he discussed about autonomous vehicles was the idea that if those vehicles stop automatically for pedestrians, pedestrians would learn to ignore them and the cars might not move for hours in places like New york City.
Not very enjoyable. Gives extensive history of prior decades automobile facts which don’t ever feel very relevant to today’s autonomous vehicles. He makes definitive statements like ‘AV will clearly create more cars on the road and more congestion’. I’m not saying I agree or disagree but maybe that conclusion should have come after an entire chapter of discussions instead of just throwing it in blindly and factually in chapters 1-3.
With a background in traffic engineering, it is easy to understand why author Samuel I. Schwartz is a proponent of autonomous vehicles (AV). However, by the end of the book I came to realize that Mr. Schwartz has taken the same hard-eyed approach to this technology as he applied during his years of service to New York City.Even people who have the smallest amount of knowledge about the coming AV evolution have strong opinions about it. Some welcome this future while others are adamant about not riding in cars without a human driver. Mr. Schwartz is extremely educated on this topic, one that appears inevitable in one form or another. As with any major change, questions present themselves, some of which may not be solved before an army of autonomous vehicles are on the streets.Mr. Schwartz is not afraid to get his hands dirty, and one of the final chapters deals with the moralistic aspects, including who may be held accountable for accidents and fatalities. When one considers the myriad possibilities in the potential programming of these vehicles, including more loss of personal privacy, it is easier to understand the precarious balancing job people will have when deciding what programming the “driver†should adhere to in different situations.The writing is deep without being dry, multi-faceted without an overwhelming mountain of detail. This future is quickly becoming our “Now,†and this book contains more than enough knowledge to enable readers to understand exactly what is racing our way. Recommended. Five stars.

This is a great book, don't get me wrong, and that's why I bought it, but the binding came off just one day after buying it. I took it to the office and didn't even have time to look at it. Then brought it home and when I opened the book this happened. Now I have to repair the book myself, because I rather do it myself than return it and wait for a new one. A little quality is not going to kill you, you know!
Great book for my Linux course but one problem the book came in brand new condition absolutely love it. The binding is glued and the glue is wearing off which kind of disappoints me I’ve only had the book for 3 days overall it’s a good book and i recommend it to anyone who wants to get into Linux programming!
Great book, but looks like pritt-glue was used to bind the cover, because the cover unglued the very fist day.
This is a great book for learning the linux command line interface - it definitely is complete. I found this book very easy to read and understand. The author uses everyday language in his explanations and gently introduces the necessary lingo as needed. You will find yourself pretty familiar and comfortable with the command line in less than half way through the book. However, it would be to your benefit to go through the entire book because at completion, you will find yourself well-versed and no longer fearful of unix-base operating systems. In fact, I would consider this essential knowledge for system administrators and web developers in general, especially if they want to get that "junior" out of their title =)

Mexican daily conversations are filled with slang and even if you've learned a lot of Spanish you may find the conversation incomprehensible without learning what people in Mexico REALLY say when they talk to each other. This is an outstanding book written by a native Mexican, with plenty of examples. The example are important because slang terms are often used, as in English, in many different ways and with different meanings for the same words or phrases. This book is highly recommended.
Raul's book has become an essential part of my arsenal for enhancing my knowledge of the Spanish of Mexico. As someone who frequently travels to Mexico, I routinely refer back to the book to reinforce my understanding of specific slang expressions, as well as to continue learning new words and phrases. As a result of the book, I've been able to selectively incorporate specific words/phrases into my speech when speaking with native speakers. Not knowing much about buddhism other than reading books on Zen ,and some information about Tibetan studies, I bought this book with the idea it would be helpful in understanding the precepts of the faith. I had no idea there were so many rules to Buddhism! It's been around 500 years before Christ, so has had time to add more rules, and have they ever. This volume is a book for children and adults alike ,and if I were a child, it would be turned off by all the "laws" presented. The book presents a story line concerning a woman who has an alcoholic husband, and tries to expound on how to deal with him in the Buddhist way. By the time they finished the story, I was ready to boot the husband out of the house rather than see things the way a good buddhist would.I found the book tedious and long winded and took a long time to get to the point on many issues presented. I would not recommend this volume to a child or adult, for that matter. I read the whole book, but felt discouraged by the whole idea when I finished.
Buddhism is easy to understand, and easy to embody. That is the real message of "Basic Buddhism Through Comics." The book seeks to take complicated ideas and rephrase them in everyday language, using everyday examples, to bring a small slice of enlightenment into the lives of curious readers.Manga artist Furuya Mitsutoshi is best known for his parody of Japanese family life in his comic "No-Good Dad" (Japanese title "Dame Oyaji.") In that series, he reversed the standard roles in the Japanese family by showing a weak and ineffective father and a strong domineering mother. In this comic he uses a similar sequence of family dramas to illustrate the basic tenants of Buddhism.One thing this book is definitely not is "Buddhism for Kids." The family dramas that Furuya uses to illustrate the Dharma are very adult; a lonely housewife who can't get her family to acknowledge her. Another woman whose husband is a drunken slob who never works. A loud-mouthed businessman who thinks he already knows all the answers. A married couple who fight over money. Each of these characters in turn is introduced to a friendly Buddhist monk who shows them how following the path of Buddhism they can improve their lives and find happiness.And Furuya takes these lessons seriously. There is nothing of the history of Buddhism here, no esoteric mustering on after-lives and reincarnation, no thousand-armed Kannons or smiling Hoteis. Instead he focuses on the Dharma, the rules of daily life laid down by Shakyamuni Buddha. The Three Seals of the Dharma. The Four Noble Truths. The Eightfold Path. The Six Paramitas that Lead to Spiritually Rich Living. He shows the connections between these truths, the connections between all things, and the right way of living that brings happiness. Because "Basic Buddhism Through Comics" focuses so much on the Dharma, it can almost be read as a self-improvement book rather than a book on Buddhism (although some would argue that Buddhism is the ultimate self-improvement). If you believe in the religion or not, there are some undeniable truths here. All things change. All things are connected. Knowing the right thing and doing the right thing are entirely separate issues. I got quite a lot out of this book even being pretty much non-religious.Because this is a manga, a brief comment on the art. It isn't spectacular, but suits the purpose of the book. The art is pretty typical of Japanese family drama series like "Sazae-san," with round-faced people on short squat bodies. The art is good enough to move the book along without being impressive in its own right.
This comic lays out the basics of a certain sect of Buddhism well, methodically, and carefully and with humor and very basic human situations to illustrate each set of teachings, based on the Four Noble Truths and extrapolating from there in quite a bit of detail. Some reviewers found it too complicated to be of use, but it rewards several re-readings. What I'm not crazy about is that these particular teaching forms seem to be tied to Nichiren Buddhism (Hi! Have you heard of Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo?). The kind where you have to chant the foregoing in front of your gohonzen and pray for money or a new car or whatever. Basic Buddhism as a philosophy and practice can be focused on a daily meditation practice, and the observance of the moral or ethical practices, which seem to boil down to telling the truth, putting others before self, not stealing, not being sexually unethical, etc. However, this is a nice book that balances all the complexity with simple, easy-to-grasp illustrated situations and stories--all just a little too pat, but gives you the ideas in a nutshell.
