First off: I have zero qualifications for evaluating Prof. McMillan’s work— she’s a scholar, author and sociologist with a decade-long track record of exceptional work. I’m merely a reader and student of the human condition in all its permutations. But I literally could not wait for Thick’s physical publication date — every review made me that much more impatient to read it for myself — and I’m so glad I finally grabbed a Kindle edition. These essays are so crammed full of striking observations about America’s current and historical racial/economic/class schisms, I feel like it’ll take me two or three more reads to process even half of her well-reasoned arguments. Not unlike reading Plato’s dialogues, this book thrust me immediately into a series of challenging conversations with a wickedly sharp thinker, and left me keenly aware of how little I truly know about the world, for which I am very grateful.
I cried real tears on a subway just reading Tressie McMillan Cottom's introduction to this book. Then cried harder at home, when I dug into the essays. And then laughed out loud as I polished off the last one, and was sad that it was already over. Tressie is a treasure and this collection is a gem. She connects, in every meaning of the word--the book is packed with lines that hit like a gut punch and overflowing with real human emotion. You won't be disappointed.
This book of essays is stunning and stellar and needed during this era. Dr. Cottom exposes the hard truth and speaks to power and the realities of what has and has not changed over time in the U.S. I highly recommend the book.
I bought this book immediately after seeing the author on The Daily Show (episode of 1/15/19) and devoured it in two days. These essays deftly weave data and personal narrative in such a compelling way that you find yourself agreeing with every argument she makes.They are not easy to read from an emotional standpoint, but they are supremely enjoyable to read from a literary one. McMillan-Cotton's voice is one you want to listen to. Even as you may cringe at the subject matter (and your complicity in it).
This was the perfect book to tuck into in the new year. I really appreciate Tressie's writing style, which is down to earth and also chock full of data (as seen by her copious footnotes and citations at the end of the book). She offers up delicious, thoughtful takes on politics, womanhood, beauty, and race in a way that feels like she's having a conversation with you in person. I bought a copy for myself and my mother, as well as for my homegirl. So, so good.
Dr. Cottom had delivered an amazing book of essays that challenges how we see, feel and think about Black women. I am numb in a good way because she's so spot on in her essays. Essays such as Know Your Whites, makes us think differently about how black people can successfully navigate this country if you don't know what motivates white people to do what they do. For example, how do you go from voting for Obama to voting for a racist and misogynistic person in Trump. Protecting whiteness.
Every essay spoke to my own experiences while also pushing me to think deeper. Hilarious, thought provoking and emotional. Highly recommend

What can I say that hasn't been said already. This book is a bunch of short bursts in EBR's life from his military service to his current life. If anything it makes me envious of his life. He has built an empire only to have it come crashing down on him not once or twice but many many times. And like the Chinese proverb says " Fall down 7, Get up 8" and that's exactly what EBR has continued to do.There are so many hidden gems in this book that you need to read it multiple times to catch everything, And personally get the printed version of the book not the kindle version only because you will be highlighting a ton of info. This book is like a bottle of shampoo, read, lather in your brain rinse. Then wash, lather in your brain again really let it set in and swirl around and then rinse. But keep it handy because you'll find yourself going back to it time and time again. Gold I tell you, Gold and more Gold in them thar pages!Ok now stop reading reviews and buy the damn book already, stop wasting time, you will not regret it. Now GO.... Go On.. Go already!
This is a great business book, not for the detailed business secrets and tactics but for the style,courage, and character of the author. Truly a character with the right kind of values for life Brian gives you the best of his experiences good,bad nd ugly and downright entertaining. He also reveals the very human side of a smart,kind and innovative entrepreneur. Business is usually a learning experience, if done right and the masterful storytelling allows you to learn while listening. It is little wonder that he is a popular speaker and can teach us all a little about self-promotion. Maybe he can let you in on being the local Chamber of Commerce's business award winner.
Wow, this was a page turner! I finished the whole thing in a day. Couldn't put it down.I've followed EBR's rise for the last few years. I recognize some of the events, but this book reveals so much more of the story. It's like they say on that show The Real World on MTV..."you think you know, but you have no idea!"The story is so intriguing and any entrepreneur will be able to relate to the struggles EBR faced over and over again, although some of them were quite extreme.It's far from an ordinary entrepreneur's story. Brian has been there and done that through some seriously crazy situations most people couldn't even imagine.Things weren't all roses, and he doesn't hide that.He failed miserably plenty of times, and he got screwed over plenty of times. In his typical, ballsy, pissing-in-the-wind fashion, EBR has no problem naming names of the characters who wronged him along the way.After reading his book, I have a newfound respect for EBR, and I feel inspired to push further and harder in my business.If you're an aspiring entrepreneur, this book will give you amazing insights and motivate you toward success.If you're a successful entrepreneur, it will invigorate you. Not to mention, you'll pick up a few ingenious tactics to ramp up your business. My mind is reeling with ideas now.Finally, if you just love a good story, with tension, intrigue, danger, back-stabbing, and a myriad of twists and turns with a satisfying ending, you'll love this. I know I did.
A very readable book. I went straight through it. Here is proof that nobody hit EBR up side the head with a guru stick. It took work, a few fails and more work. I never did see the word "quit" anywhere. His formula is the same as you've been hearing your whole life with a few new twists. 1. Learn to develop an eye for opportunity. Its not a gift, its a skill you can develop. 2. Make a plan. No substitute for good planning but it needs to be flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances. 3. TAKE ACTION! Nothing is going to happen without this step. He also mentions his family support throughout. SOOO Important for any success. I'd recommend this book to anyone contemplating a business, online or off.

"How did you drive your partner to cheat?")*excuse, legitimize or minimize infidelity ("Monogamy is unrealistic." "Anyone could cheat." "Maybe it's a sex addiction.")*cast infidelity as modern, sophisticated, and completely natural ("The affair was an act of exuberant defiance! A quest for aliveness!")What this book does do is portray infidelity exactly as it is and offer THE BEST advice to those who have been betrayed. Chump Lady calls it like it is with a great sense of humor about a painful topic. Infidelity has become increasingly seen as something that "just happens", something that is caused by situations and external factors, rather than by a cheater's defective character. As Chump Lady points out, there are two very respectable things for people to do when they are unhappy in a committed, monogamous relationship--work on things or break up. Cheating is abuse. Tracy recognizes betrayal for what it really is. If you've ever turned yourself inside trying to figure out how to save your marriage, or change you spouse's mind after you discover they're having an affair, do yourself a favor and read this book. I've read many, many books about how to cope with betrayal, but none helped me move forward and "get a life" like Tracy's did.
At a time when your whole world is literally falling to pieces, this book provides a very direct approach to understanding your situation and the steps you need to take to regain your good emotional health. So many infidelity resources seem strongly biased towards forgiveness and reconciliation, no matter how badly the victim has been treated. Tracy is one of the few lifelines out there who holds cheaters accountable for their own bad and unkind choices. Her advice in empowering and inspirational and much needed at a time when you've just been sucker punched. This book is your first step in regaining balance and learning to trust your instincts and protect your interests.
I wish Tracy Schorn's Chump Lady site or her book had existed when I discovered my x was cheating. Maybe I could have gotten out after 3 years of marriage rather than 11. He cheated the entire time. I might even have been able to avoid the marriage altogether. There were signs, though I misinterpreted and excused them. My experience agrees 100% with one of Tracy's premises: cheating is a deal breaker in a relationship except in rare and extraordinary circumstances. In my case, despite his many protestations and promises, the x continued to cheat and continued to want to be married.To those in the early stages or who have a high tolerance for broken promises (as I once did), the tone may feel too harsh. It took me a while to accept its accuracy and necessity. The longer you try to act in good faith with a known liar, the more pain and damage you will suffer. The information in this book will help open your eyes. Anyone who cheats without confessing is a practiced liar. It takes a lot of lies to cheat and cover it up. I know this is hard to accept about someone you love. It's part of what makes what should be a straightforward, though agonizing, situation so confusing.You need an ally by your side, someone who can help you understand what's happening and what options you have. Your usual advisers may not know how to deal with cheating. The rules are different. For one thing, cheaters don't follow all the rules. And they have their own rules that they don't share with you. That alone can create a crazy dynamic. Even if you're inclined to reconcile, I hope you'll take Tracy's perspective into account. It will open your eyes to some important things. I wish that had been an option for me. It would have saved me heartache, wasted years and exposure to STDs.My heart goes out to anyone whose circumstances led them to this book, but I'm glad you've found the clear-minded advice it contains. I hope you take advantage of it as part of your support system.

I love Nick Lyons- while at times his work reads like that of an English professor (which he was) he still captures the heart of flyfishing like no one else. I fished the same Spring Creek he writes about and can vouch for his compelling narrative. His last two chapters are heart rendering as he faces the transition we all will undergo as we age. Still it was only a year ago that I heard that he returned for one last trip and fished his beloved Spring Creek one last time. I hope he will bless us with a story about that trip.
Lyons uses these pages like your mom does her china hutch. A store-all for cherished things over time, related to one another mostly through their curator alone. It's a great collection if you admire an unpretentious life of fishing, quick wit, and the reflections of someone who's managed to make his passion his life. I love his story about dumpster diving the garment district of Manhatten for fur scraps to tie his flies and send to his buddies.
I have been a tremendous fan of all of the author's writings. Prior to ordering this Fishing Stories book, I had just finished (probably for the 2nd or 3rd time) Nick Lyons' book Full Creel. I was very disappointed in reading this new book as most, if not all but the last story in the book, were stories which had been told in his prior books. Its not that I did not appreciate those stories, but to buy another book of those same stories was a bit disappointing. I will have to say though that the last story in this latest book was enjoyable from the standpoint that I felt Mr. Lyons was sort of "wrapping up" on a storied career of very enjoyable literature. However, in the future, if I see another "new book" by Mr. Lyons, I will carefully scan it to make sure it is not another compilation of prior stories from his other books.
Pure Nick Lyons with a bit more nostalgia. I was expecting to get some rehash of earlier works, but this is fresh. Although I must say having read most of his earlier writings made this one even more enjoyable.
Collection of great stories from one of the best fishing writers ever
This book brought the memories of my youth flooding back to me in waves. Mr Lyons is a literary treasure whose words are made of gold. I wanted the stories to go on forever!!
Fun reading for my husband who loves fishing and stories.
Nick Lyons has written many fishing books over the years; all good, some excellent. This book is a mixed bag of stories as the title suggests. Some of the stories are better than others, as are his books. A few of his stories are amazingly insightful as if he is standing nearby on a stream experiencing the same sensory input as you. Other stories are touching, a few funny, and a few are just an accounting of an ill-fated family trip in which he tries to squeeze in a little fishing. Mr. Lyon's wife and family are either bored or resigned to endure his hobby which is rather sad and not so entertaining.
